I think the 1.9s update might have some problems with the GC audiofix that was added in the 1.9b update. I just tried playing Eternal Darkness after updating and the sound was all distorted. It worked fine when my Wiikey was 1.9g. Is it safe to switch between 1.9s and 1.9g?

Yes I did, I also tried the GameCube Controller, it still stays on Press Any Key
if you tried putting the gamecube controller in or turn it on (if youre using a wireless controller) while youre in the update or config disc, there are some people that it wont work that way. you have to have the gamecube controller in and/or turned on while youre on the wii menu
HunterX5, is this applicable to Recovery disc too? I have read through whole of this forum a couple of times and gather that using the non-filechop & non-GCOS Recovery disc (40MB) works for a number of ppl here.
And that is what I have been doing for the past few nights:
1) Startup wii with Recovery disc
2) Wait for 3-5mins.
3) Turn off and on with the Recovery disc still in and look out for gamecube logo. (Tried a couple of times to unplug (hard-reboot) instead of turning off as suggested in previous posts.
4) If no logo, i'll continue and wait till approx 5mins and repeat the whole cycle again.
To have the controller plug in is something new and I've yet to try. If what you said is applicable to Recovery disc, then I may consider getting a controller for myself.

Obviously! (LOL) ... as you could tell, it was late and I needed some sleep here! :-)
Anyway, listen, everything that was said about the SSBB update from backup discs, applies to SSBB original ones. So, make sure your Wii firmware is update at 3.2 (via Internet).
Then if you run the US SSBB update you will get duplicate channels. You might opt to do the 30% trick [it will work - however fiddling with firmware updates could leave your Wiikey in a suspended and un-recoverable state].
You might want to try to switch the BLOCK UPDATE feature on using the Config 1.4 disc and see if SSBB (US) runs (It appears that for BLOCK UPDATES to work, the DEV MODE needs to be ON as well).
PS: Keep in mind that now there is a way to remove Duplicate Channels if you decide to go that way.

Yes you can update you Wiikey with any of its firmwares at any time.
Just a reminder to you and everybody else:
Firmware updates are a delicate process. If you google FIRMWARE UPDATE FAILURE you will realize how widespread and relevant this problem is (for all types of hardware). That's why every once in a while, in some rare cases, we have somebody who ends up with an unresponsive and un-recoverable Wiikey.

You could be correct as I have seen many reports about this. Have you tried the AudioFix option in the Config 1.4 disc?

Can I do this 1.9s update without having a game cube controller?
Does this update corrects the problem we were having in 1.9g, that when we tried to run some backups it said "unable to read disc"?
Do backups of SSBB (ntsc) work without this update?

I was on 1.9g and I just put the disk in and updated without GCOSing etc i.e. no controller.
You can't expect that it will fix disk reading errors generally. It may or may not but that's like asking will all backups work and of course they all won't.
SSBB USA NTSC backup has worked for me and others on 1.9g without a problem and it also works for me and others without a problem on 1.9s.

Will the 1.3 config discs still work on the new 1.9s firmware? I already updated, but I'm having trouble getting a 1.4 config disc to work, both my GCOS and non-GCOS versions don't. The GCOS version shows up in the channel but when I start it up, the console just resets itself. The non-GCOS version doesn't get read by the wii. However, my GCOS 1.3 disc is working fine. Any ideas?

I was in the same boat except on a PAL Wii - I updated just out of curiosity cos I wanted to confirm all would still be ok for me.

Obviously Config 1.4 does not have options for all the settings that Update 1.9s. What exactly are you trying to change with the config disc?
PS: Have you used Padded or Unpadded files. Have you tried different media? Are using -R dvds? Have you tried different burning speeds? The reset problem sounds like a burn problem of some sort.

Lately I have seen a lot of posts about the 1.9b recovery disc and firmware problems with the Wiikey. There is even a new thread about that.
As I stated before, Firmware updates are a very delicate process. There is always the risk that corruption in the update process could leave the Wiikey unable to function or to activate itself upon the insertion of the Recovery disc.
Now, these are rare instances, but they do exists. And I think that problems have been caused by playing with the 30% trick (Would you do a 30% trick to your motherboard or your new BR drive?)
If you read through this thread, I have always reccommended taking the utmost care when burning firmware discs, because, based on what I know and have seen, I suspect that even a small, insignificat corrupttion of the firmware due to a bad burn, can do significant damage if it happens in the wrong spot of the firmware code.
As for the recovery disc the instructions are;
- Switch on Wii and eject any disc in drive
- Insert recovery disc and reset Wii
- Wait for at least 3 minutes. There will *not* be any sign that the wiikey is recovering, and the recovery disc will not appear in Wii menu.
- Power off the Wii and switch it back on again. wiiKey should now have recovered its firmware, and EEPROM will be restored to its default settings.
(Sometimes it takes up to 20 times for the process to work)
Obviously if this does not work, then you look at the usual suspects: A bad burn or Bad media.
If that still does not work, then you try something that could 'shock' the Wiikey into a working state, such as unplugging the Wii at the beginning, middle, or end of the process.
Hope it helps.

so seeing that iv just downloaded SSBB Ntsc-Pal, should i let it update (cos i dont really care about having double channels) or should i just cut the power at the 30% mark of the update. Btw, i have 1.9s and the config disk. Thanks in advance!

I would do the the 15% trick to avoid the dual channels.
You will need your Wii to be at least firmware 3.1, otherwise you risk bricking your wii.
You will also need to burn two discs ... etc..
Read the thread about SSBB here at AfterDawn for specific instructions.
NOTE: The 30% or 75% trick I was complaining about is the trick that people used on the Wiikey update to run the Retail SSBB on Wiikey before the 1.9s update came out. So it has nothing to do with you. In your case the update you stop it's not a Wiikey update, so there will be no damage to the Wiikey chip

if your scared bout the 30% process for SSBB on your wii.
just download the datatel freeloader, there is millions of torrents around.
i used the a back up of the ssbb ntsc-u, on my pal, and it works fine.
just put in the freeloader twice, load ssbb, will ask for an update, say yes.
its fine to update, its not a firmware update, its an update apparantley just
for your wii to read dual-layer discs and to run ssbb.
its safer this way and not a tricky process of pulling the plug.

I'm not trying to change anything specifically right now, I was just wondering whether those options already present on the 1.3 config disc (like region override) will still work on the new firmware. I know that the disc won't have the new options but do the existing options still do their job?
Thanks for the advice that it's a burn problem, I'll try some of those things you suggested until it burns right.

BTW, I have to say something about this Clone vs original Wiikey matter.
There has been an announcement by team Wiikey that, because the beta samples onf the new updates and config were leaked, they will not work on any future new update.
I guess that it all came down to one of the beta-tester distributors (Who should remain shamefully nameless!) posted a link on its site and from there ... well you know the story..
Obviously, with these leaks, the Wiikey team stands to loose money to people who will hack the firmware and produce clones.
My opinion at this regard is that, if you decide to go with a Wiikey, make sure it's an Original. Support the team that has always come through for us, even if it costs you a couple bucks more (literally!)
From my part, a big THANK YOU! to team Wiikey for another strong release.
