Hi - Back when SMG came out I successfully updated to 1.9g with the help of rafadawn and many others on this thread. I don't have a lot of time to enjoy my Wii but just saw the pending release of MarioKart and thought I'd check out the thread to see if anything was being discussed about it and noticed that 3.2u is out as well as 1.9s.

I currently have a U.S. Wii with 3.1u and 1.9g. If if read previous posts correctly the following are true:

- It is safe to update to 3.2u; and
- the 1.9s wikey update simply allows you to play dual layer originals with the wiikey installed.

I've been content simply playing SMG and haven't cared to get any new games after SMG. I guess I'm wondering if all the newer games are now on dual layer disks and thus we need to do the 1.9s update to play them. I had planned to purchase an original of MarioKart so I would assume that such a new game would possibly require the 1.9s update.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks. . . glad to see the thread still going strong and helpful.

See if you can get a config disc to run in GCOS mode and then switch the Region Override to ON.

Well it does not look like we're going to have a flood of DL games on Wii. Even Mario Kart probably will be SL.

However the new 1.9s Wiikey update is extremely solid. I would just update, regardless of DL games.

I'd consider updating if it weren't for the stress I recall having when I did it last time (better describes as the "what if I screw it up feeling"). Don't get me wrong, it ultimately worked which was great since SMG is a fun game, but due to my lack of computer skills, I'm a little hesitant to update the Wiikey again unless there is a particular game I'm dying to play that requires the update (such as MarioKart).

What key games are out now that are DL games? I'm guess I'm thinking the "if it ain't broke, don't screw with it" philosophy is suiting me at the moment. Is there something else the 1.9s update does besides allow DL original game play that should make me reconsider? Everyone's Wii game play is different, currently, my use of the Wii is an occasional game of bowling with my wife and an hour a week or so of SMG when I have down time.

Rafadawn,

Do you think MarioKart (being one of the staple games for Nintendo) will have anything on it which requires another WiiKey update as when SMG came out to play MarioKart?

Is this just something that gets determined when some poor soul tries to play it with a mod chip in his/her Wii and their unit gets bricked?

Have you tried GCOS discs? Does the Gamecube logo show up in the disc channel?

If you do not care about playing SSBB, then you can stay at 1.9g.

I do not think so, since they did not even try with the release of SSBB.

Yeah.. I was thinking the same thing, but then all of a sudden ALL my games including originals were starting to fail on me? here's a tid bit, tell me if I'm wrong on doing this, but it seemed to have worked... what I did was used config 1.2 turned override back on and changed disc speed to 3x and for some strange reason it is working flawlessly again?

Rafadawn --> Would I still have 1.9s firmware on the wiikey? even though I reverted back to 1.2 config? is there any known issues by doing this?

Originally posted by rafadawn:
It definitely should not be happening. However, different firmware updates have been known to somehow increase the Wii's sensitivity to disc scratches.

1) Does the SMG disc have any obvious scratches?

2) If it does not, and assuming that the problem was caused by the update, try a different burn of the 1.9s update and re-install it.

Mario Galaxy in particular? Anyone else having this issue?

Hey Guys, I haven't posted in here in a long time so yeah im just wondering if anybody has duplicate channels from an update out of their region. and is looking to remove them? http://waninkoko.wiinewz.com/Wii_Channel_Remover_v2.zip
Download the file, burn YOUR Wii's region iso to a DVD-R at 4x then run it on ur wii and voila! no more duplicate channels!

There's a sticky for this already. v2 is like 2 days old as well... you gotta expect someone here would know about it on the day and share it before now ;)

No issues whatsoever. Actually, you can definitely use older config with the 1.9s update, especially to do SD dumps since that option is absent from the new Config 1.4.

Glad everything worked out.

OK, I've found out that my Wii is NOT D2C. So would there be any other reason that my Wiikey's not working? Faulty chip? Faulty modding? Or what rafadawn said about the Wii drive not reading disks properly when in weird positions?

I just got a premodded wii and learned that it's firmware is 2.2U (old... I know!). I don't know which wiikey updates it has either but given that the firmware is 2.2, it's probably old as well.

Is it safe to update the firmware to 3.2 before updating wiikey to 1.9s? Or should I make sure to update wiikey first?

Thanks!

Is the chipset D2B? That's the chipset wiikey supports. If not then that would be a reason it doesn't work. If it is a D2B and the wiikey is not working the chip could be faulty or the install could be bad yes.

I'd update the wiikey first just because that can be a bit tricky on later Wii firmwares. On later Wii firmwares you can sometimes have to mess about to get the Wii to read wiikey firmware/config disks. As soon as the wiikey is updated get the Wii updated and you will be good to go ;)

I noticed your thread here Chris.. I had a similar problem just the other day, not exact but similar.. I would suggest the following.. I think Rafadawn would agree..

"If you can read GCOS discs" then I would suggest using config disc 1.2.. keep the wiikey updated to 1.9s.. what I did was reflashed the wiikey first with 1.9s and then ran the config disc 1.2 to turn region override back to on, seemed to have fixed my problem.. I'd try that out too.

Guys I'm a total noob and a few questions for ya...I just got my Wiikey, I have SMG burnt. I'm assuming the Wiikey comes with 1.9b installed. So would I be able to just insert the game and would it work? or would I need to update the config to 1.4 first? Then to play SSBB, I would need to update to 1.9s? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thx.

SMG needs 1.9g so I'd go to that at least and 1.9s in any case. 1.4 is the config and works on 1.9s. You don't update the config - you configure your wiikey with it.

I have gone through the 56 page thread here, have a similar problem as many with burns not working anymore. The difference with my problem is that I had my young cousin over who brought his legit smash bro's for Wii, put it in, updated my system with the game and the internet update. I have tried the 1.9b recovery disk option many times with fail. I even went out and purchased brand new Verbatim DVD-R (used ImgBurn at 4x).

I had the chip installed by a guy here locally (does them for many in Chi-town), so I assume my possible next step is open it up and remove the battery for a while? Is getting a new Wiikey an option if nothing else works? Normal game discs still work just fine... Any advice is much appreciated - been on this for a week before making a post.

Thanks

I meant to that it comes with 1.9g* not 1.9b. So run the 1.4 config first then do 1.9s?

NO - the 1.4 config is to configure the wiikey once the 1.9s firmware is in.
