johnyb,
id say keep it around 20 MAX while downloading then kick it up a little bit when you are seeding.
gamical,
trackers are the sites that give you the hash codes so u can start downloading torrents from people that are sharing. private trackers give u better speed than public trackers because people have to share in private trackers or risk getting banned :)

JohnyB2, insane!!! 100 seeders and you get 180kbps download speed. I mean I couldn't even reach 180kbps when I'm downloading 13000+ seeders! With that seeders, I usually get 95kbps download speed.(13000 seeders)
However, when its like 100 seeders only, my download speed is only 25kbps... :(
Are you using cable or dsl? And what is your mbit?

Schwaber, im using dsl on a 2mb line. it was the first dl i had tried since takin on dvd back's advice. also there wasn't a lot of peers connected just seeds on a private site. i dropped my global ul to 10 and my dl shot up :-). im also in the UK,dont know if that makes any differance.
MNA a liverpool fan oh dear ;-p... dont know then mate. I take it your in the UK,who's your isp? Plus what did you download..? I mean did it have a lot of seeds/peers?

There are a lot of isues combined in getting good download speeds. Number of peers, connection capabilities etc.
One thing that is always worth investigating is the number of conections allowed globally. As every connection needs handshaking and every packet needs acknowledgement having 1300+ connections will generally swamp your download with torrent admin traffic. usually on a 2Mb/s connection the limits are about 80 connections and 50 files open. This assumes you have set your max download speed at unlimited and your upload around 20kb/s.
Sometimes it's 18 max other times it works better at 22..you need to tweak it every so often. Also it's worthwhile to check any specific rules imposed by the tracker and see that you are connectable. Usually having NAT firewalled kills downloads as it only allows you to esrablish connections outwards. reduces mine to around 8kb/s download where on a throttled 2mb connection my download maxes out at exactly 253kb/s.
Of course on my T1 duplex it's unimportant as I can upload faster than most can download.. Really on the private trackers it's a good idea to try to limit download speed so that the download keeps reasonably in step with the upload, otherwise for the sake of your ratio you end up with a machine that sits uploading for days and days without doing anything else productive.
Finally it's a really good idea on the pruvate trackers to check out the allowed and banned clients list from time to time. Lots don't allow any bitcomet code based clients. I use Azureus, only because I have not had much success with utorrent on debian.
Otherwise..this is a great guide..explains everything, but always very worthwhile having a look at the FAQ pages on demonoid for a more in-depth expalnation of certain features of torrents and clients.

Yep! heavily seeded dude. like 13000+ seeders! I mean it's always the same time as before cuz it weekly comes out. But for some reason, this week is really slow. It went down from 90Kbps to 45Kbps.. It has the same amount of seeders as before.

I guess. Since your leaving it overnight and no one's gonna use the computer during that time period, then I guess it's safe to say that, yeah. You can.

it wouldnt be the wisest thing becuase the upload would limit the download because it would hog all the bandwith on your line and it would make your downloading go slower.
but it is ok to leave it at unlimiited while you are seeding if that is what you are trying to say.

I've been using bitcomet, now i'm trying utorrent. I've followed the advice of several guides for ut. but my speeds are pretty weak. Right now i'm trying to download a 8 gb file (collection of .avi's) in 1 gb blocks. The torrent has a couple hundred seeds but my utorrent seems unable to link to more than 15 or 16. most of the time my dl speed will be 50 or less kB/s (much less half the time), but it'll jump to over 200 kB/s for a period of time then drop drastically even when the seed ratio remains the same. I'm a road runner high speed cable connection to RCA DCM425 cable modem (no network), static IP, ports open - though i'm using windows firewall all ports are in exception tab. my speedtest results have DLs over 4000 and uls at 360. Again i've done everything DVDback has said, including the tip with adding trackers to the task link.
Any advice for tweaking the speed and connecting to seeds that i may have missed would be appreciated.

Guys, I tried downloading a file by putting my settings into "high priority" Guess what. I left my computer overnight and next the thing I know, there is a virus entered my computer! :(
I set my computer to turn off after 4hours and next morning I opened my computer and got a message from Norton saying that a virus is detected. Its high in level of risk. But by the way things in my computer run now, it seems that my computer isn't infected at all. I really do hope that thing was a false alarm..

i doubt you got a virus from the torrent, this sounds impossible without running an .exe or something like that.
either way you should proabably head over to the Windows - Virus and spyware problems section
