@robinowen
Since you have a FATPS2 and want to get into backing up games the Best way to go for the $ would be to get into using a combo of Swapmagic / Slidecard that way if a game isn't compatible with HDLOADER (same thing as HDAdvance) then you can always play the discs with Swapmagic...
$24 from this site (I bought my Fliptop and Swapmagic from here)
http://www.clearxbox.com
You'll need a PS2 Network Adaptor and a IDE Hard Drive
you can find these at your local stores like Staples Walmart Office Max/Depot Circuit city Etc etc...
I was able to find a good deal on my Maxtor 200GB Hard Drive
Staples $49.95 after $50 electronic Rebate (took about 2 or 3 weeks for the check to come in the mail, not bad)
Once you have all the materials you need then you need to download the HDLOADER Software and all the software you need to make a Memory Card Exploit to run the HDLOADER Program and you can get those from this site http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=hdbackgrounds.html all the info on how to do this can be found on that site and also this site if you need help http://www.exploitstation.com/
IMHO if you're going to spend the $25 or so for HDAdvanced on Disc why not just get running with Swapmagic and D/L a better ver of HDAdvanced (HDLOADER patched ver .8a) and then you'll be able to run more games on your system

Using a fliptop will make it easier than using a slide card
and backing up games (most of them anyways) is as easy as using DVD Decrypter in ISO Read mode to write the ISO file to your Hard Drive and ISO Write mode to write said Iso back to a DVD-R/+R

You should read from page 1 on this very thread. We helped out a guy in your same position and answered basically every question he asked.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/354350
And I did a pretty detailed overview over what you need to get started and a couple of pointers on how to get it done and/or get the other in-depth information you need. :)
PS2 V9 with Custom Flip Top
MC Exploit
ULaunchELF 3.78
HDLoader 0.8a with 160Gb Maxtor HDD
Nintendo GameCube DOL-001
XenoGC 2.0
POTS adjusted to 400Ohms from 496Ohms and runs everything thrown at it
If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

Have a look here: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list I'm not sure which model you have so can't tell you whether it works or not, but most of the maxtor 120GBs are reported to be working on this site.
Also there's no such thing as an external HDD... it's probably an IDE HDD in a USB enclosure...? You can use it in the PS2, but not PSP (unless you want to carry a HDD of that size with you around)

well... technically it's an IDE HDD (probably 2.5") inside a USB/IEEE 1394 enclosure, but yeah everyone calls it an external HDD, was just being picky there no offense intended :)

you really need to take the HDD out of the enclosure and see what the model is so you can check against the site I gave you to see if it's compatible... sometimes the same enclosure will have different HDD inside so that's not the best way to determine if it's compatible or not. Also you realise that HDLoader won't work with USB HDDs right?

Hi, i came across this thread in seach for instructions on installing a hd to my fat fliptop ps2 and us the MC exploit to load hdl. The direction you have here are great and I also been searching/downloading/reading about this topic all over the place. But for some reason I still can not get the MC exploit to install the launcher and hd loader. I've burn about 10cd-rs with various iso/bin/cue, but none would load/read when I use the swap magic 3 cd ver. I don't know what I am doing wrong? could it be that the swap magic 3 cd version is defective? but it does load my back-up cd games....
so my ps2 got the network adaptor, i think it is v10 or v11, i have not installed a hd yet, i wanted to install the hdloader first. i got a psx game(point blank 3), and I know how to enter the SLUS id correctly, i used indepedent compiler 4.1, burned a cd, use swapmagic3cd, didn't load.
burned hdl 0.7e iso on cd, used swapmagic3cd, didn't load.
burned hdl 0.8b bin on cd, used swapmagic3cd, didn't load.
followed the instructions here: http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=exploitmaker.html
using exploit maker and adding the hdl 0.8b memory card elf to the FILES folder and also the boot.elf from launcher 3.4 to the FILES folder, burn cd-r, used swapagic3cd, didn't load.
burnt cdloader7 iso and it wouldnt load either.
burned the hdl 0.8b dvd iso, used dvd swapmagic2, didn't load....
i dunno what I am doing wrong? did I miss a step?...please help me with your experties....I don't know where else to turn to.. :(

Is the Compiler creating a dummy file too? If that's not helping, you can try burning it to DVD and booting it with the DVD version of Swap Magic. Some PS2's have issues booting CD backups, so that's kind of normal to a certain extent. Although I'm not sure what the steps would be to burn it to a DVD. But give it a go. Also, make sure you have enough MC space to get it running. :)

thank you for your reply. The compiler 4.1 creates a 100mb dummy file and i have about 4mb on my mc...i tried burning a hld 0.8b iso to dvd but that didnt load with swap magic dvd, and i'm not sure how i can burn the exploit on dvd either, since the compiler creates it into cd iso/bin/cue....mmmm...i just hope i am burning these cds correctly...

Not if you want to make an Memory Card Exploit and Boot Hdloader using a Playstation 1 game..
if you use that one you'll have to boot with Swapmagic and swap it for Hdloader everytime you want to play a game...
