Well, Azureus worked very well with Magnet links. I got good good speeds with it but couldn't maintain computer stability (which i actually expected with Azureus which is why i tried it first). My little computer is only 256meg :) if i had double that i think Azureus would be a good choice. I think i'll try this utorrent next...

As far as a static ip address, you will need one if it's changing on you and negating any forwarding. Besides, it's easy to do, Now, go to start>run>type in cmd or command and select ok. In the black command prompt window, type ipconfig/all and press enter on your keyboard. Make a note of your ip address that appears. To exit, type exit and push enter or just close. Shut down your computer for 5 minutes and when you restart, check your ip address again and if it has changed, it will have to be set static but if not, note the lease obtained after it because I believe it will change on that day. But, really, setting it static is easy and you won't have to check it all the time and probably is best, check it out here: http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm

Well I've tried everything listed here, tried using different ports, and I'm not getting anything over 40kbps. I'm using Azureus and I have a d-link dir 655 router. While this router can run bittorrent without constantly disconnecting it's quite a bit slower than my linksys router on the download speeds. Can anyone help me here?

Hmm, I tried both of these already as well, it didn't help.

Mistycat, i am fully in awe of your knowledge in these matters however it is not always possible to create your own static ip address. If you do not know the DNS of your SP and they are refusing to admit to it being any different from what is shown on ipconfig/all, then you cannot possibly use portforwarding. Also if your connection is an ADSL dial-up broadband you will not be able to enter ANY DNS on the connection config page. Finally, if you only have a SpeedTouch 330 Modem (very popular in the UK with ADSL providers) it does not even have a web utility to forward the port on!!

This has been my problem and i very much doubt (although if you can tell me how to obtain Static IP in this case i will provide you with all the chocolate and fluffy things your heart may desire :)) it can be solved in any conventional sense.

What i have done is used uTorrent's Protocol Encryption (in and outward bound) and disabled UPnP. Now connections are fine for approximately 6-7 hours, after that i'm refused connections to peers, all i do is disconnect, wait five minutes and re-connect. The other problem I'm having is that fair usage is scragging my connection speed during certain hours. When this happens i simply shut down, disconnect the modem altogether for five minutes and then re-connect and boot up. Signing into uTorrent i still get a bit of a stumpy connection in peak times but other than that it's fine.

I am also completely able to upload my own torrents (which according to some popular beliefs should not be possible) and have had three out of three succesful torrents, one of which has gotten quite some interest. None of them have died and all still are registering a green strength on the lists.

So, my advice?

Are you ADSL? Is your IP dynamic? Does setting up a 'static ip' stop you from browsing? Does your ISP refuse to admit their DNS is different to what you see on ipconfig/all?

Get uTorrent. Allow encryption inwards and outwards. Disable UPnP.

Try again.

Hope this helps some folks!!

Try going into your router to obtain your DNS; I had to and it wasn't hard. This site explains it: http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm I don't know why your ISP refuses to let you know what your DNS is unless you told them it was to set a static address to download torrents. Edit: a static ip address shouldn't be necessary with a modem. You can have look at this site; I haven't tried it yet but I plan to. It's free and supposed to be quite good. But again, I'm only going by posts I have read: http://www.opendns.com/

I am trying to increase the speeds at which I download and upload. I am using Bittorrent version 5.0.6, I am using a static IP address for my computer, which is not wireless but two other computers in my house are wireless and go through the same router, should they have static ips? I have enabled port forwarding on my router for 6881-6889(should i do more?), i have also added the ports in windows firewall (doing tcp and udp, is this necessary?). Is there anything else i can do to speed things up??? Perhaps a different torrent client? different software firewall? in bittorrent, under settings should i set the max upload and download, or let it autodetect the bandwidth? Is there a way of knowing which ports might be blocked by my ISP? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Speedtouch 330 is a dial up ADSL modem, it has no web interface. I'm a bit of a fossil at 30 years old, perhaps you call it a GUI or something? You cannot go into it because there is no 'it' to go into ;)

I'll take a look at that thanks, i live always in hope. Of course i did not tell them it was torrenting lol, although there is absolutely no reason not to say it's for torrents as long as you are perfectly versed in why it is legal and why stopping it without proper notification is a breach of service ;)

I told them it was to run a web server.

They won't tell you why your IP Address and Default Gateway are the same address and your DNS is useless because they want you to BUY a static IP ;)

Anyhoo, thanks once again for the suggestion and i am now going to have a look at what you found. I still hold sway that your knowledge and understanding of all this is certainly amongst the best i've seen online, keep up the good work eh?

Cheers

A static ip address isn't necessary unless your router is selecting a new one each time you start your computer but can save a lot of annoyance. I used a dynamic address for 2 years until it started changing on a weekly basis. But you're still going to be dividing your bandwidth between computers if you download on each. I'm not familar with Bittorrent 5.0.6 but unless it opens a new window for each download, like BitTornado, only 1 port is necessary and it should be over 10,000 as ISP's can block those under 10,000 and especially any default. Your program has to be granted access through Window's firewall and that is all I've ever used as most routers contain a hardware firewall. utorrent is a great client if you're thinking of switching and it also contains a few options only a few others have like Protocol Encryption which may help your speeds but that's not guaranteed and a port checker.

Thanks Mistycat, i changed the ports to over 10000. I did more than one, although bittorrent vers. 5.0.6 doesn't open up additional windows when downloading more than one torrent. I still upload around the same, close to 30 kbs, and downloading at like 4kps. Guess i am unsure if i should set the max upload rate, and the AVG. download rate. Is there someway that one can figure this out? I think i recall reading something about dividing your total bandwidth capability by 8, but I am unsure. In windows firewall, do I add a port on the exceptions tab? Or, do I go to the advanced tab, within the firewall config window, and add them as services, under the lan and network services tab? I should probably set the port that bittorrent starts with the same port number i used, the one over 10000, right? Thanks again.

Thanks GhostyGoo @ burkek86 Upload configuration has always confused me; take your upload rate and divide it by 8 and 80% of that is what you use and you can set your download rate to max, here is a site where you can check your speed, very accurate but check it a few times over a few days: http://speedtest.net/. Bittorrent 5.0.6 should be checked in exceptions, if not, add it. A port shouldn't be necessary, I've never had one added and no problems here. It sounds as if your ISP is blocking torrents, any chance of that or do you see it here: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs or is that speed temperarily low?

Thanks again for the info, and the links. My ISP wasn't on the list, and I don't think it is blocking anything, I have roadrunner. I did the speed test, which says my average download was 4908kp/s, and my average upload was 307 kb/s. Is this something I have any control over; in particular, the upload speed? Thanks.

Not that I know of. You can experiment with various settings, my U/L speed is not much higher than yours but works fine at 60; go figure.

Your ip address you forwarded in your router may be changing each time you start and need to be static: http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm . To check, go to start>run and type in cmd or command and click ok. Now in the Command Prompt window type ipconfig/all and press enter on your keyboard and make a note of your ip address that appears. Type exit, press enter and shut down your computer for 10 minutes. When you restart, check your ip address again; if it hasn't changed, a static address won't be necessary but also make a note of lease obtained or something beside it because I think it changes on that date. Also ensure it was entered in your router correctly. A port over 10,000 may help as will enabling Protocol Encryption for each: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 As this appears to be just a modem, a static address shouldn't be needed. Try the other possible solutions. BTW, you do receive a green light in utorrent's speed guide?

Try these: use 1 port over 10,000 that isn't the default, disable UPnP at Options->Advanced->Connections (I think), enable Protocol Encryption: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 and set a static ip address and forward that but pay attention to the part about the Default Gateway and DNS having the same address: http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm

i heard this idea that all bittorrent versiona above 3.2 should use ports 6881-6999 and the versions below this should use ports 6881-6889
