I've been doing a lot of searching, but I can't seem to find the solution to my problem, as my issues don't seem to apply to any other threads I've seen, port forwarding or otherwise. This thread is my last hope.
So here's my deal:
Couple years ago, got a Dell Dimension 8400 with windows Xp home and Norton Anti Virus.
Got a cable modem, started to use BitLord for torrents, and had download speeds of up to 350 kb per sec. I didn't change any default Bitlord settings, b/c I never had to.
Later, I got a linksys wireless router, and added it to my setup. No difference in DL/UL speeds - still very high DL speeds upwards of 300 kb/s.
Recently my HDD died, so I had to get a new HDD and reload Windows XP. But after reloading Windows XP my Torrent DL speeds are hideous (1-5 kb/s), even without Anti-virus installed yet. My physical modem/router set up hasn't changed at all since my HDD died, and I never changed any firewall settings or linksys configurations before or after reinstalling windows, so I don't think I would need to do any port forwarding right? I never did any port forwarding before, or ANYTHING to my network settings for that matter.
Do I need to reinstall my network card or something since I reinstalled XP? I mean, my normal direct download speeds are still lightning quick, but torrents are not even chugging along. Weird thing is, sometimes Firefox will open BitComet to download direct downloads, and those speeds are 500 kb/s sometimes. Of course, since it's direct DL I guess, there wouldnt be any uploading since its not a torrent per se.
Or did Dell have some special factory settings that I lost when I reloaded Windows XP??
I've tried reinstalling software for Linksys and my Terayon modem, but that didnt help either. No improvement using different software either (Bittorrent, BitComet, Azereus).
Basically my set-up and settings don't seem any different than before I reinstalled XP, but I can't get a half-decent torrent DL speed. And the UL speeds fluctuates drastically.
Please help - these 5 kb/s DL speeds are killing me!

Don't know about your speeds before but that router has to be port forwarded and you should dump BitLord. It is banned on most trackers and installs malaware. There are numerous threads in this forum regarding it, Bitomet is also banned by some trackers. That said, my recommendation would be utorrent with Protocol Encryption and, also allow incoming legacy connections enabled and use a port over 10,000 that isn't the default. See my post above and if you can, connect your router directly and see if that makes a difference.

hi Mistycat
Ok so I tried what you told me - basically switched the utorrent port to <10,000, and I unplugged/disconnected the router so my computer was directly connected to the modem. But I'm still getting really slow DL speeds, so it mustn't be the router, right? So port-forwading the router ins't the problem...?

I assume you meant >10,000. It could be a matter of a low number of seeds and peers, do you receive a green light in speed guide or the main interface? Or you could have been unlucky enough to have your ISP start blocking while you were down although I doubt that. Who is it any way in case anyone knows? Have you installed any kind of firewall; the router isn't the problem right now but would be if things were fine with just the modem. At options>preferences>connections, untick UPnP port mapping and you could try unticking both references to DHT at options>preferences>bittorrent but those apply more to private sites.

umm can anyone just answer me this: Do you have to have a router for torrent downloads or does the router make you go faster because i have a router but i've been downloading with a direct connection to the internet. thanks!

If you don't need a router for networking, hardware firewall, don't use one. It will never increase torrent speeds.

kk so it won't change the speed at all, so if i have a direct connection it is the same as having a router with open ports? and if so why are my downloads going SO SO SLOW is there still something you have to do or configurate to increase speeds when your not using a router

If you use a client that supports it, like utorrent or Azureus, maybe enabling Protocol Encryption, disabling UPnP or using a port over 10,000 or just time.

Hey softgun if you have done everything possible to speed up your d/l and nothing is working and you had fast d/l b4 well i suggest that you go on the internet and check your internet speed. If its half of what your suppose to be getting then my friend you have been throttled by your isp.It happened to me already. So that would be my suggestion just to get every possibility out the way. If you find that is the case have fun argueing with them to restore it...
Case=Antec Lanboy, Psu=Corsair HX620, Mobo=GA-X58A-UD5,Ram=Gskill 1600Mhz 3x2gigs,Cpu=I7 950 4Ghz,Cpu Cooler= EK 240 Water Kit,Gpu=HD6870x2,Eyefinity Set up,Ssd=Gskill Phoenix Pro 120gb

Misty and Chop,
Yeah, greater than 10,000 is what I meant, sorry.
Ok so I double checked my settings on Utorrent, and then (again) connected my computer directly to my modem, and *bam* - DL speeds of up to 100 kb/s. So yeah Misty, it doesnt seem as if my ISP all of a sudden started bottlenecking or whatever when I was down - that would have been weird timing.
Chop, my DL speeds are fine - when I'm doing direct DL's, they're lightning fast.
I appreciate the input guys - I've been able to identify the router as the problem since my Torrent speeds are fast as hell when directly connected to the modem - at least the last two have been super fast, from 70 - 100 kb/s. And I ditched Bitlord.
So I guess Port forwarding is the only solution right? Just to throw it out there, is there a way to split the internet connection at the modem so I still have direct connection from my computer to the modem, and ALSO a direct connection from the linksys router to the modem? Sort of like a Y-splitter? Or is that only possible with a router/hub?

As far as I know, port forwarding and probably a static ip address is the only fix.

wow i left my dl overnight and now it's atleast going at like 2-10kb/s and im using direct but i only have 5(36) seeds. My direct download speed is like 300-500kb/s, people are saying that when they do port forwarding their speeds go from 5kb/s to like 100kb/s, im not even using a router and my speeds suck so much. Can some one give me some setting i should configurate or something to increase my speeds and my seeds. Oh and im using Azureus. Thanks

Did you enable Protocol Encryption and disable UpnP and use a port over 10,000. Your ISP could be bocking torrents, what is it and maybe someone knows. Your speeds could be low due to a low seed to peer ratio (total) or having downloaded the same amount as the peers you are connected to.

What exactly is protocol encryption? I havent changed any settings with protocol encryption on uTorrent I dont think (speeds are fine right now with comp. directly connected to modem). I've only disabled the UpnP. Is there any security risk involved with enabling/disabling it?

Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_protocol_encryption explains it better than I could. It can be found at options>preferences>bittorrent where you'll see enable protocol encryption and allow incoming legacy connections but if your speeds are fine, I doubt it would help. If you try it, untick allow incoming legacy connections if there is no difference and there is no security risk with Protocol Encryption that I know of.

kk thanks. I changed the protocol encryption as they told me to in the forum and i changed some setting with www.azureuswiki.com to get good settings. Hopefully this will increase my speed but im not sure its gonna make it go like every1 says (70kb/s+ or anything) so thanks but it's probably gonna mess up and im gonna be back with more questions lol.

WOw when i restarted my download it was at 65kb/s, i was so happy :) but then it dropped again GRRR!!!!. It's not really going that much faster even with all the settings changed. Maybe i just need to give it an hour or so to pick up some speed, oh and is there any other problem with the protocol encryption that i might be facing and don't know about cause i really wanna see that 65kb/s stay this time.

umm this might be a dumb question but im just checking about the ports. im using port 65000, i've turned my norton fire wall and just incase i added the port in windows fire wall with the name Azureus port. If you're not using a router is there any port which is fast or good...thanks!

Your speeds may vary according to many things, connection, seed to peer ratio, how much other peers you are connected to have completed, etc. I have seen my own speeds fluctuate between 300 kbps + - 5 kbps on some downloads, even on private sites when I was basically catching up and then waiting. If your speed never increases again, then there's a problem.
