I have a DLink DI-514 router and I am a newbie. I have downloaded the BitTornado client and have been reading the threads. I am unsure how to configure my DLink router to allow ports 6881-6890 like I have seen that I need to. My router interface looks nothing like the Linksys. Can someone who is familiar with this router please help me configure mine. I also need to know what IP range to use and if I need UDP or TCP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this is a long post but a couple of possible solutions are right above you. You may need a static ip address, check it and don't use ports under 10,000, your ISP may block them. It's up to you but having more than 1 download going at once slows them all and you'll need a couple for uploads. I used 4 when I had BitTornado. And check this list, your ISP may block all torrents: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs Disable the Window's firewall if you use it too and, as I recall, BitTornado took up to 15 minutes to show a green light. A long shot but connect your computer directly to your router if you can. Check your configuration too: http://portforward.com/english/routers/p.../BitTornado.htm

Every time you restart your computer and have a dynamic ip assress, your router nay assign you a different ip address rendering any port forwarding useless. A static ip address won't change, therefore you can forward permanently to that address. It's also easy to do: http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm Even with a green light, your speeds will vary greatly so that may mean nothing.

Your ISP may block torrents, what is it in case anyone knows or you may need a static ip address. Check at ipconfig/all to ensure that you forwarded to the proper address. Connecting directly may help too.

Here for a static address how to: http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm It will explain how to find your ip address at ipconfig/all. Don't use the address you see at port forward, it may not be correct, mine doesn't show correctly. Not address related but use a port that isn't the default and over 10,000.

Indian911 - use 1 port (the same) for both trigger port and public port and make it over 10,000. If you use a client like BitTornado that opens seperate windows for each downnload, you will need a range. And you need both TCP and UDP enabled. Also, make sure your ip address is correct, it may need to be set to static and if your client supports Protocol Encryption, enable it. Only 3 do that I know of, Azureus, utorrent and BitComet.

u mean i just use 1 port for that i.e 10001 etc etcc!!
but shouldnt i be using assigning more ports so that more peers can connect at a time???? :?

Just use one port unless you need a range for your client and any port over 10,000 is fine. The number of peers you connect to has nothing to do with more ports, 1 open or 1000 will connect the same.

There is no need for those 16 entries (8 in my case, as my router lets you select both TCP and UDP)and especially those ports. Since then, ISP's may block default ports or those under 10,000 and 6881 - 6889 in general. 1 port is all you need unless your client needs a range but multiple downloads will divide your available bandwidth so I would only need them for seeding anyway.
