Depends on teh Wii, Newr wii's have a D2C chipset which will require the DC2KEY modchip (28 solder wire install). The WIIKEY modchip can be used on older model Wii's (6 solder wire install).

Wiikey is a modchip

You need a modchip installed to play backup DVDs.

If its a new model wii, you will need the DC2KEY modchip.

No, Modding your Wii is the only way. yes it can "void" your Nintendo warrenty, but most professional modders will warrenty the work for 1 year min. (same as your Wii warrenty). if you got an old stock Wii (not likely) you can get it modded for bout $80CND but you probly have the new generation, which has the D2C chipset, that would cost you between $120-$160 CND to Mod. again these prices include the 1 year warrenty that MOST but not all modder offer.

Just opened my H30N up... different laser to the GDR-8161/2/3/4

Interesting thing though is that looking at the laser for the GDR 8162 ( and i suspect 1/3 & 4!) its exactly the same part no. as the laser for the xbox 360...

SF-HD67, about £8.00 for HONG KONG

In some cases, not a bad investment - or on the other hand, if the drive is faulty for other reason you could sell the laser !

Save mine to an external HD, that way I can burn as needed.
When i do disc to disc copy with nero burnt backups it works fine for me. So that is I used nero to do a disc to disc copy that were originally burnt with nero and it works fine. I have a lg 8061b 0100 copying and an optiarc burning.

Not true. I've duplicated backed up discs using CloneCD and it works flawlessly. You can also create a cloneCD image of the disc and burn the image files to a DVD for safe keeping in case the backed up game disc gets damaged and you would have to create a new backup disc. I keep a disc of the image as well as the game disc. Discs are cheap and will save you much time in the future. Try this out!!!! You will be glad that you didn't have to dump the original again taking hours!!!!

Does still stand that the only drives capable of ripping Wii discs are the four LG models (8161b, 8162b, 8163b & 8164b)? or are there other drives capable of ripping Wii Discs?

This sticky needs to get updated with information about the USB gecko. It is by far the best and easiest way to backup Wii games now. You only need the USB Gecko adapter and the Gecko Tool (comes with) and you do direct dumps from your Wii to your computer via USB 2. Its way easier than trying to find the compatible drive and unscrambling or any of that. Simply plug the USB Gecko into your gamecube memory card slot and plug it into your computer's USB 2 slot, then dump and burn. The gecko also lets you run homebrew directly from your computer onto the Wii, so no more multiboot discs for emulation, just run it through the USB Gecko. You can also capture screenshots and video as well as to remote debugging and so much more. I got mine last week and its the best thing to ever happen for the Wii since the first modchip in my opinion. The company is supposedly working on software to make it possible to make and run backups without a chip...no timeframe or info on it currently, but who knows. Anyway, this should be updated to suggest the USB Gecko for all the noobs like me who just want the easiest way to do it ALL!

I have a problem! I can't burn it to DVD-disc. If i burn it with ImgBurn, it brokes and theere isn't any file. If i try with normal Windows Burn System it says that it needs 5,71 MegaBytes more!
What kind of DVD disc should it be? What's the best DVD Disc for Wii games?

Thanks very much. I did see that later after I posted and it does seem those four drives are the only option, except a couple post above this, Sponkey21 is talking about some Gecko USB gadget which I will need to look into.

You can easily google the USB Gecko, Addictron has a video of it in action. But the homepage is here http://www.usbgecko.com/
I must say, it is easy, and updates are all free for download in the future.

*The Following is cut right from the "Gecko" web page*

"Can this play backup games?

No this device is not a piracy device and never will be. The device is aimed at developers,
programmers and also hobbyist Gamecube and Wii enthusiasts."

their site seems to contradict what you what you claim, care to enlighten us more?

To me its seems that being able to rip wii discs with the gecko as well as able to allow homebrew is its biggest advantage and probably money better spent that on $50 LG Drive.

What does this USB Gecko thing really do, like can it play backups that you get from the internet, or ones that you rip from your DVD drive?

What are you talking about? It rips the iso directly onto your computer. Besides being able to run homebrew.

You are right in that it does NOT allow you to play back-ups, but it DOES allow you to rip Wii Disc to your PC which means its an alternative to getting the LG DVD ROM Drive.
