is there any way to "modify" the way the wii works without altering the interior of the game system? i would like to play my game backups but i really don't want to do surgery on my brand new wii.

Alright after many tries and successfully burning SSBB with the layer break code, i was hopeing to find out does that LAYER BREAK CODE still have to be done with SMG?

SMG is friidumped from a friends original copy, and Wiikey updated to 1.9g. Since i cant find anything about a layer break method for super mario galaxy im guessing you just burn it straight?

Can someone just verify that for me, ive wasted enough DL's on SSBB thats all.

Thanks in advance.

@icykle

If this is a copy and not an original that you are trying to backup then just use NERO or IMG BURN to copy it, any burner will work.

If it is an original wii game you need one of the LG drives to back it up. I have read that the GDR 8160 DO NOT work.(I could be wrong but it could be why you are having problems) You can use either FRIIDUMP or RAWDUMP to rip the games. FRIIDUMP 04 works with Dual Layer like SSBB. Rawdump does not. Both work to RIP the wii games.

The drive listed is BENQ in the picture you posted - that is not an LG drive and the game title is not listed which leads me to believe that it is just a copy and you can use nero or IMG BURN to back it up.

Has anyone read anything on the wasabi chip? It was just released this week. Here are a couple of sites.

Post that query in the mod chip discussion thread - it's a better fit there :). This thread is for backing up games.

Read the first post on the first page of this thread, it's clear that your BenQ DW1625 is not supported and even says so in the screen cap you posted. FriiDump will always take hours to make an ISO even if the drive is unsupported and it's not reading anything, it just contains junk. I use RawDump and never had any problems making backups.

I just noticed that in another post you said your drive was an LG8160 but the screen cap shows a BenQ DW1625 as the selected drive. Neither of these drives work.

Driver issue
try plugging it without starting rawdump, does it still freese?
try uninstalling the drivers from your laptop, and then plug it back to reinstall them.

in relation to friidump i had the same issue. i have since determined that for an unsupported drive - ( i used a pioneer and it said dump successful too ) - the drive doesnt actually read the disc!!! i copied one of my games with an LG DVD-R disc, perfect disc size and all, but... the read light on my dvd burner was never on through the entire 3.5 hour dump process - not really sure what was dumping? maybe the internal drive memory based on a 4.7GB disc? unsure... i used multiple discs sony, verbatim, lg - still no success. used different games. tried to dump into raw and then unscramble - still didnt work, so i have now come to the conclusion its not the wii disc its dumping... if someone can tell me what it dumps id like to know.... so i wouldnt keep wasting your blank discs.
the reason i was able to find out that it wasn't reading the disc is because when i went to use NERO to copy over image with ignore read errors, the drive just doesnt read that a disc is inserted at all.
i will be receiving at 8163B in the next couple days so i will confirm whether NERO works for a straight image copy or not.. i can confirm though that using a Blue dvd-r disc rather than silver seems to allow dvd burners to backup already copied games. no errors - no problems - reads the wii disc perfectly. will do another test on the simpsons game and let you know.

i can confirm that with a backup game, (simpsons), burned onto an LG DVD-R blue disc, and then using NERO copy over image with ignore read errors at max read speed and then burned onto the same blank dvd-r that the game will work perfectly!!!!! (NOTE : i used an old pioneer dvr-108 from like 5 years ago for the read and write - co problems, still burned using 4 x speed to create a deeper burn though. You should be able to use any program to copy and already backed up game, i have used IMGBURN to create the ISO the write the ISO. also works...

BENQ is my burner, and i also have the LG DVDROM but i guess its not supported.

So as you guys stated, using rawdump/friidump original game can be dumped to iso, and rawdump is just more straightforward where you just click dump and go, where as friidump it will dump useless junk regardless if the drive is reading succesfull or not

K so i guess my concerns are all cleared. just wondering if this statement is true: If you change your dvdrom status to PIO Mode in the device manager properties - rawdump will work ?

Just a ponder.

And thanks to everyone that replied to me.

It seems that the LG GDR-8164, 63, 62, & 61 are extremely hard to find. Does anybody know if another DVD reader can do the job? Or can someone tell me where to buy an LG GDR-8164 or any that works. I've been searching for a week now and no luck so far. Hope someone here can help me.

Thanks

Hey there guys.

I noticed earlier in the thread that someone mentioned the LG GDR-H30NBL drive. Is that capable of ripping GC games?

Thanks. :)
