Yes, I always go for the best possible picture which is why I use DVD-RB/CCE Basic. When the new version of Shrink is out I'll give a fair go and if it is as good as I hope is then I'll have all the tools I need. I still use shrink for ripping.

Did you see an improvement over the backup you did when not using the "Deep Analysis"?

When I use Shrink I prefer to use "Deep analysis."
Some backups with minimal compression (5 to 5.5 gigs} don't seem to benefit from deep analysis much but when the files start coming in at around 6 gigs then using deep amalysis is a no-brainer. Even with deep analysis it is still quicker than DVD-RB/CCE.

I do have Nero Ultra and I've used recode a few times especially when I was playing around with anyDVD. One feature on recode that I really llked was the slide bars for adjusting video quality. By the time I became aware that shrink was also involved in the development of Nero Recode I'd already moved on to using CCE Basic.

I still have a little more than 2 weeks of my summer holiday (I'm a school teacher)and with the current prices on Ridata at Newegg.com I have lots of good quality media to experiment with. I'll go back over recode again soon.

Evening Sophocles,
I was wondering where you'd gotten off to. Hopefully the improved Shrink will be out in a few days so everyone can give it a try out. The deep analysis seems to be even deeper. The picture stays the same, but it works with higher compression. There are a couple of Quality Settings adjustments for B and P picture compression that seem to help as well. They are on the window that pops up when you enter Backup. I had it working at a little over 30% compression and the picture was as good as the older version at low compression (all quality option on). It took right at 2 hrs to record Pirates of the Caribbean.

@brobear

I've not done enough backups yet to really comment on the new version of Shrink. The Godfather backup I did today seems promising considering that it's a 175 minute movie. Give me a couple of days to try some of the other features and then I'll have something solid to report.

Sophocles, I'm glad to hear the "Godfather" backup turned out to be promising.

I would just like to add that the two new "Quality Options" are the only new features in the beta (the ability to output as "split" ISO for FAT32 users is in the process of being implemented).
It is also recommended to use both these options for DVD Shrink optimum output quality at fairly high levels of compression (> 30%).

I wanted to do dry run first with only deep analysis so that I can use it as a control so that when I introduce variables I will have a stable point of comparison for them.

I was familiar with the older Shrink and then went in full gun and turned everything on for maximum effect. Sophocles analysis will give a better picture of the separate controls and their contribution to the total effect of the program. Hope you explained about the different frame types in the manual ddlooping, as the general public won't know what they are pushing the button for without some explanation.

I did a seond copy of the Godfaher using Shrink with all of the quality settings turned on. I will make the cmparisons later today.

When I said promising I was referring to its stabiliy and it seems stable enough to go gold. The picture was a little soft but that's using the old Shrinks features and the Godfather was intentionally filmed to look somber.

I've not done a back to back comparison between the various backups yet but the discs are made and ready to go. I'll let you know later today.

I want to find another disc to backup today that didn't use the artistic photogaphy used in the Godfather. I have plenty in my collection now I just have to choose.

Its still in Beta and not out to the public yet. Should be sometime in the near future. This improved version does a good job with the higher compression. There are some minor quality settings that make a world of difference. The noticable differences don't start being noticable until you get to about 25 to 30% compression. It doesn't break under load like the previous versions.

Hi Pete. :)

I'm affraid the beta versions are not publicly available yet.
Following a somewhat "heated debate" between members of these forums and myself, I asked dvdshrink if I could release the betas to brobear and Sophocles.
The condition was for them not to distribute the betas.

The good news is v3.2 Final should be released before the week-end. ;)

Hey Pete

brobears means it's the same old Shrink with a couple of new options that allows for greater picture quality. Add deep analysis to the new features and you have a greatly improved Shrink.

With the new programs, do we start a new thread or just put up a road sign saying we started over again? Looks like different attributes for the new versions.

You need to start a new thread for "special people" only to work with Shrink, right ddlooping, that way you can screen everyone :)

By the time ddlooping finished screening all the special people here at AD, DVD Shrink would have already gone gold and already been released.

Hey there!! Since you are all talking about numerous programs and not just DVD2One, which program do you think would be the best to fit multiple movies to one disk with the best picture quality? I don't do this myself but a friend of mine uses dvdshrink to add two movies. He has found that only two will fit with no more compression available. I use DVD Decrypter 3.2.2 "movie files only" and CloneDVD 2.9.4 to process and burn. No coasters as yet. I used to use dvdshrink but found dvdshrink 3.0 beta 5 to be successfull over the later additions. Your views much appreciated. cheers!

Hi there ozy,

I start with DVD Shrink ver. 3.1.7 and put all the movies through re-Author. I strip everything from the film until I have the beginning frame of the flick and the closing shot - I keep only 1 AC3 audio and even kill off the credits. I then run the movies I'm working with through maximum compression X2 with Deep Analysis. I then put the finished movies in a Desktop folder. I like DVD2One in the "join" mode to compile all the movies I'm working with to go on a single disc. My maximum is 5 DVD-5 flicks on a single disc and a maximum of 4 DVD-9's. When I say DVD-9's I not referring to some of the "Monsters" that is out there but something around the 7.2GB size or smaller. There are times I'm away from home and want my own entertainment so with a single disc I can be happy for a solid weekend - plus. 3 DVD's last me a week :) and I always have room for 3 discs. Quality ? Better than you could possibly imagine - in the VHS range. Something that you might record from your TV at regular speed at best and like something recorded on VHS LP at the very worst.

No, no menus but then again, I'm playing them for myself so I go from beginning to end - watching movies I put in the order I wanted to see from the get go -

Tell your friend to give it a try -

Enjoy,

Pete
