So if I heard correctly, any sandforce controlled SSD should be agreeable, no matter the manufacturer. OCZ makes me nervous though. Mushkin however makes extremely good Ram. Both mushkin and intel are getting good reviews. Intel however is more expensive for similar performance. I think I'll be one to give Mushkin a shot. I really think 120Gb is the way to go for me. They have a 3 yr warranty :)

I got my replacement Velociraptor :D I plan to use it as a backup for an SSD OS. Hopefully 3rd times a charm. It usually is for me. *touch wood*

I'm such a nice guy around this time of year. I put off my SSD upgrade. I decided my brother and mother were more important. I bought more Ram for my brother, and a new BD player for my folks. At least with this BD network player, I can stream content to it, and don't have to worry about greasy finger prints on my optical discs :p

Perhaps by february, the price will drop even more on reliable SSD's.

Seems like an agreeable build for the price! Although I find it humorous that any manufacturer would ship a windows 7 Machine with 2Gb of Ram. It's fairly easy to saturate 2Gb of Ram unfortunately :( I don't mind giving windows 7, 3 or more gigabytes though. I find it a worthy advancement/replacement to XP ;)

That is an excellent price for a dual-core/four-thread processor plus they gave you the 2GB of RAM in the first slot so I would upgrade that immediately with another 2GB stick of the same latency (timing).

Great deal!

I just bought a new notebook, I was looking at ASUS, Toshiba, Acer, or Samsung but decided on the Acer as it was the best deal at the time. Russ has had good luck with his Acer, I have two friends with new Acer's and they love them, another friend has two ASUS notebooks and they are really nice, and another friend yet has a inexspensive Toshiba which I've worked on that is also rock solid and he is tough of gear (a garage mechanic).

This is what I bought at WallyWorld on sale for $498
Acer Gray 17.3" AS7750-6423 Laptop PC with Intel Core i5-2430M

It has (4) RAM slots with 4GB DDR3 1066 loaded in the first slot, in-which I will buy (3) more before I even get it, to load it up with a total of 16GB's RAM. The only things I wish it had was a second bay for another HDD and a dedicated video card. For that cheap you can't expect those features.

If it doesn't work out Russ expect to see me at you door step knocking away... LOL :D

ZoSoIV,

Looks decent to me. Good price too! I would recommend one of these fans, as there is no rear case fan.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185058

Since fans are somewhat limited in cases like that, 68 cfm at 22dBA moves a lot of air. Very quiet. I've had mine for over 2 years, and it's still ticking, and that's 14-17 hours a day, for the most part.

Warmest Regards,
Russ

Wow, that is a heck of a deal! And it is rare that I've seen a laptop come with a 7200 RPM HDD. Personally, I would populate the remaining memory slots giving you 8GB, just to be on the safe side.

Woo my ISP just gave me a speed boost. Downloading has gone from about 2.4MB/s average to about 2.9-3.0 ie roughly 19-20Mb to about 24Mb.

Uploading took the biggest boost going from about 250KB/s to about 500KB/s ie from about 2Mb to 4Mb. Yay for services that improve their hardware and don't suck!

20/2.5 to 25/5 package rate then by the looks of things. Not bad. 5Mbps upload connections are still relatively rare these days.

thanks guys ,yeah Russ that would be a no brainier for 14.00 dollars and omegaman7/Mr Movies right on the Ram and that would be an inexpensive upgrade also. I'm going to order it today or tomorrow for her

BTW guys I'm finally going to upgrade my machine to DDR3 Ram and a faster quad-core with windows7 the first of the year.I'm good on my case of course and power supply and i think my video-card will still be ok(I'm not gaming much anymore)so I'm looking at a new MB(going with Asus),DDR3 Ram(haven't decided, going to max it out)and core(going with an i7 Intel quad-core haven't decided on that either) and i always replace the HDD upgrading,so if anyone wants to throw out some ideas that would be great.I been absent from the thread for a while even though i still been reading here good to see you guys again!

Actually, the speed increases are the result of some serious hardware upgrades going on at the main facility. A few years ago the fastest they offered was 8Mb down 1Mb up. The bandwidth they have available has simply increased at no cost to me. I paid for this as an 18Mb down 2Mb up connection but found it to be closer to ~20ish down and ~2.5-ish up.

Not to mention the "SpeedBoost Technology" which gives me the first 100 or so megs of any download at 60Mb+.

I would hold off on the HDD or buy a smaller one for now as they have almost doubled in price recently with Seagate's flooding issues in Thialand. My mom needs a new HDD or at least more HDD's but I threw a 80GB that I had laying around for now until prices drop back again at which point I'll buy her a 1T or higher drive. For RAM there are many you can go with but most of us here like G.Skill's Ripjaws as a decent performance inexpensive RAM. Here is a good value for the newer Quad kits;

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9Q-16GBZL **Quad channel kit for Intel X79 LGA 2011, XMP ready**

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7Q-8GBRM

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7Q-8GBXM

Dual Kits;
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBXM

How in the world did I miss all these problems with FF8? I upgraded to FF8 a couple days after it was released and it performs exactly like my previous version. All my addons work the same, including adblockplus and noscript. It does tend to use a lot of ram, which I now know is not just because I never close FF like I originally thought, but that doesn't bother me enough to change. Can't say I'm looking forward to the day these problems catch up do me and force me to change to Comodo Dragon; if I'm lucky that day will never come lol.

I hate how it doesn't handle bookmarks and agree with you fully. However it doesn't limit sites I can go to and so many other problems FF has these days. I just can't support Firefox anymore.

Here are just some of the problems I've had recently;

Problems with Firefox 7
#1 Some sites do not work at all or you can't navigate once the home page is displayed.
#2 Download sites on multiple tabs creates a problem since there are not handled individually. I had to close FileJunggle download ready to get FileSonic to display download ready link.
#3 WUpload wouldn't allow download link to start downloading and then trying IE I couldn't restart the download because the site thought I was downloading when I was not.
#4 The spell checker gets confused and I loose my flashing bar which shows my text position when I'm correcting mis-spellings.
#5 Realplayer Record Pluggin doesn't work.
#6 I doesn't log you in when you go to a site that it has saved your login in for. Instead it just provides that information in the login boxes. I would prefer it logs you in as that is why you told it to remember the sites login or don't display the login info until you go to login.
#7 It is very slow changing sites or starting a new site.
#1-4,7 I've never experienced or had problems with
#5 never used realplayer so I wouldn't know
#4 never knew it was supposed to auto log me in lol

I use tabmixplus which might fix some of the tab problems, but I can't really say since I don't use FF without it much.

I'm not the only one who has had these problems, I know of others that do. I didn't list all of the issues with FF there are more those are only some of them. Chrome or alternatives do not have these issues but I must say I don't like the Favorites and it is not as full featured as FF unfortunately. So I use Iron, Avant Browser, and IE8 as my normal browsers, my friends and I will not use FF for the most part, at least since v3.5 and I've kept up with the later versions, in fact have v7.01 right now.

If Avant Browser would allow spell checker & ADBlock Plus plugin's that is the only browser I'd use.

"#4 never knew it was supposed to auto log me in lol" Yup it is suppose too, if you choose to save login credentials! but fails in comparison to other browsers. :(

If it works great for your usage than have fun with it, it's not good enough for me though.

Mr-Movies,

I'm not so sure it's all the Browser. I had FF8 with XP and all the add-ons worked fine. When I installed Win 7 Pro, none of them worked. I reverted back to an older version of FF to 3.6.13, and everything works perfectly. ABP, YT Downloader, Redirect remover, and Weather Bug all work fine. I think the main problem is with Win 7. After all, Gates can't make money with the pop up adds blocked. They don't work with IE8 either.

I don't know about you, but I won't have Real Player on my computer, with it's ties to QuickTime, and all the other crap you have to install, even if you don't want it. It's also a PITA to uninstall, what with over 700 Registry entries, that I took out the first time manually. Never again! I bought Registry Crawler 4. It takes out all the junk! For Real Player, you have to run it, and then go back and reboot in safe mode to remove the rest of it. Much easier than manually doing it, and much faster too!

Best Regards,
Russ

For Real Player, you have to run it, and then go back and reboot in safe mode to remove the rest of it. Much easier than manually doing it, and much faster too!

Best Regards,
Russ

I liked FF8, but I can live without it
No it has nothing to do with Microsoft's site(s), which I'm very well versed with, and it can be repeated across many of my friends PC's, it is always the same sites and situations. My dad was told to use FF by one of his friends that he thinks is super smart but he too found out that FF wasn't as good as it seemed or was presented. Even IE8, Avant Browser and Iron can have problems but nothing like FFx. This isn't something I've just briefly gone over.

No offense meant but I just am not impressed nor will I rely on FF for sometime.

Thanks though for your input Russ, Best Regards,
Stevo

Shaff,

There are things you can do to Win 7 that involve working in the registry that will make some things work, but I see now that ABP works with all Windows. It only used to work in Win 7, in FF 3.6. Redirect Remover and WeatherBug don't work in Win 7 unless you use an older Browser.

I took out Yontoo layers while I was in there. I have no need or use for Facebook or any other social network. I think they should be outlawed, as they all link directly to Homeland Security in the US. There isn't anything that you say on any of them that the Government's of the world don't know about! That includes texting as well. People who use them are stupid in their use of them. People get arrested every day for things they say on Twitter, Facebook, My Space, etc!

I don't care who the CEO is, Gates is the one holding all the money, and still wants more. He brings out an expensive OS in the middle of the deepest recession since the 1920s, when he could be doing a lot more to help people in these troubled economic times. How many billions does one person really need anyway? Do you think for one moment that Bill Gates cares how many millions of American children got to bed hungry every night? I guess he figures that it's the kids fault for being poor! Don't even get me started!

Or lose their job's as all employers pay people to monitor social networking.

We pay way too much for projects that are never complete i.e., Vista should be 7 and they still didn't get everything under the hood for 7. Yet we continue to pay big dollars for unfinished, less than stable products. This is the one area that Apple is much better at as their OS is very cheap to buy, but then they really make up for it by screwing you blind for their hardware.

Both Steve jobs and Bill Gates are pound scum, you can throw Donald Trump in there with them too.
