Forum rules here, and forum etiquette anywhere. I just don't see the reason to double post for multiple responses, even on totally different topics - the only times I will normally do it are if I forget.

I found the problem with my screen saver and monitor power settings. My MICRO$OFT Wireless Mouse. My Micro$oft mouse causes problems for Micro$oft Win 7. How in God's Green Earth can Micro$oft make an OS that's incompatible with their own hardware? I pay extra money to buy an M$ wireless mouse, to insure compatibility with Win 7, and it doesn't work properly with it's own brand of Mouse. That's pathetic!

I should be surprised but I'm not, that is really sad Russ who would figure. If it was Logitech or someone else you might see the problem but from the OS provider, shame-shame is all I can say...

ChrisC586,
That's that 3D wall Browser add on for pictures and stuff like that in ForeFox. I'm finding a lot of stuff get's installed on your computer completely unknown to you. I do not like not having a say in whether I want it or not!
Best,
Russ

Adobe products are the worst Russ, but many want to run all the time and automatically update. I always shutdown a program from running in the Systray or kill the update program after installing a new program, which with most programs works fine but some aren't so nice about it.

Steve,
The funny part is they list two problems. One is caused by the remote for Power DVD. It never starts, I have it turned off. The other problem deals with the Mouse. The file affecting it is also part of Power DVD. It's supposed to be PWM.exe. There is no PWM.exe running on my computer. If I remove the Mouse receiver, the screen saver and monitor shutdown work fine. If they are running when I plug in the receiver, it will stay running until I move the mouse, and it won't work again until you remove the receiver. The Mouse says Compatible with Windows 7 on the package it came in, along with all the other systems, so I don't think it's unreasonable to expect it to work. These aren't old stock either. I bought 2, both made in September 2011.
There's all sorts of things wrong with Win 7. You can't incorporate a gif file into a slide show. The Viewer doesn't play gif files! I still have a ton of useless garbage that I need to find ways to turn off. I was trying to read what a file was today, and I guess I hovered over the file for too long because it changed the window and put all the files to the left third of the window. It took me about 20 minutes to get the view back I wanted. Working in multiple windows becomes a real pain when you have several windows open, switching back and forth between Windows. First time I've ever had to beat an OS into submission.
I talked to M$ on their on line help She tells me that I may have to purchase a new mouse, so I say to her, give me something that works, and she started to quote me prices. I told her No, it doesn't quite work that way. The way it works is Microsoft either fixes the problem, or "gives" me a wireless mouse that will, and BTW, that's two wireless Microsoft mice! I told her that according to the M$ site, this has been a known problem for more than two years, yet both my mice were made only a couple of months ago, so you are willingly selling hardware that you know does not work properly with Win 7, that still says Win 7 compatibility all over the package, and was sold as such November 2011. I finally just asked for a Time Stamp, and she transmitted it to me. I asked her to refer this matter to her supervisor, as it obviously goes well beyond her jurisdiction, and than I asked for the switchboard Operator. I gave the operator the lady's ID# and asked to leave a voice mail for her supervisor, and I referred him to the case number and asked him to call me. I'm a very hard sell, when someone expects me to pay for their mistakes! :)
Best Regards,
Russ

Russ,
That really sucks and M$ should do just as you asked, as they are mis-representing their product and again how sad it is that their own product doesn't run on their own product, really dumb isn't it! Stick to your guns and get a good mouse in return, they OWE YOU THAT!

Russ, I have cooliris. I just opened my browser, and it installed the latest version. In other words, it updated it. Some times I use it, for on the fly searches of imagery. It's possible it was a third party software in something else you installed eh? When I install things, I never just say yes to everything. I carefully read everything it's about to do. Askbar anyone? I don't want the askbar!!! Or perhaps you simply forgot installing it? I'm certainly guilty of installing things to check out, and then forget about them :p
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

Oman7,
No matter what you download and install, you have to watch like a hawk, especially downloading from Brothersoft. I've had issues with Brothersoft installing the Ask Toolbar, when I specifically unchecked the box. Yahoo occasionally does the same thing, installing the Yahoo Toolbar, when you say not to!
Micro$oft is the worst though. Every time they upgrade to the next "New" Hotmail, I don't accept the upgrade until finally your email no longer works, and you have no choice but to upgrade, or they hold your email hostage. Oh! The new hotmail sucks!

Hotmail is naff, but free services are perfectly within their right to update themselves when they please. As for software installing itself without notice, I take that as an assumption with any software these days, that it will automatically update itself. The only thing I obviously dislike is spyware toolbars and the likes, but they very rarely come along without having to be authorised first, so usually not an issue. Even if something does sneak past that I don't want, no matter, just uninstall it.
There is far too much idle network activity from the sort of programs that I use to ever use an internet activity indicator to assess whether something illegitimate is going on. The only time I'd ever need to use netlimiter's per-application bandwidth monitoring is if a lot of bandwidth was going astray. With high-speed connections, that's pretty difficult to notice, as it takes a lot of data to cause any latency problems. You just can't give every minute of your time to keeping an eye on your internet, nor do you need to. To extend any effort to it at all other than if you have a certainty your system is infected with something, is just mad.

You can always use your firewall as well to stop some programs from accessing the internet but unfortunately some of the programs change their update name when they are blocked, if you are using name blocking.
Just because freeware software is free doesn't give them the right to do what they want, they shouldn't be any different and the same privacy laws, that aren't enforced, should apply.
Russ,
It is always nice to have a monitoring light or indicator for network/internet access, I too wish they still had that feature.

Stevo,
The one I sent you works perfectly. I'm running Win 7 Pro. You can set it to start with the computer, so it's all automatic.

Can someone help me. I want to build a new pc as an upgrade to my current set up. I'm using an intel D945 dual core @ 3.4ghz. I haven't built a pc for a few years now and want to know what cpu's are faster. I believe xeon is a better choice but is getting dated. I don't want to spend a huge amount either. Thanks

Define 'Huge' amount :) Just how much is too much?
People with money to spend generally favor intel. AMD tends to offer bang for buck.

Xeon is not a good choice for a desktop computer unless you have specific needs for multi-CPU, multi-core setup. With Xeon you need ECC memory.
You might want to take a look at THG's CPU charts. You can pick which performance you want to emphasize and see which CPUs perform the best for that specific task.
In any case you pretty much need to build a new computer from scratch, since you can't really upgrade an LGA775 motherboard anymore.
The key points IMO for getting a snappy computer are (assuming you run Windows):
* SSD drive for booting and OS
* at least 4GB memory, preferably 8GB
* Windows 7 64bit
After that the CPU and GPU specs depend on what you want to do. For general desktop use, you'll do just fine with an Intel Core i3-2100 or AMD Athlon II X2 255. Do some Photoshopping, rendering, video encoding? Bigger is better. =)

Well having a look on ebay there is an Asus P8H61-M which covers i3/i5/i7 intel CPU's for about £40. Are they any good?

Ketola offered a very good post. Thanks by the way! I like their CPU chart ;)
A lot of people in this thread dislike, or rather don't trust Asus anymore. I'm a neutral party really. I've bought multiple Gigabyte boards and seem to be hooked to them LOL! But if there's a deal to be had, go for it. Provided it offers up everything you need of course. The motherboard and CPU are some of the most important factors to consider.

I think the most important thing to know is what do you want to do with your computer, and then price out the best quality you can afford, from what will work best for you. If you are thinking about a particular component, google it and see what others have to say about it. There are also places you don't go cheap on, like Power Supplies. $15 PSUs are not going to do it. Avoid them like the Plague!
You could also take a look at "Bare Bones" kits, and check out the components offered. You can do surprisingly well with the right combination of parts. A good place to start would be www.newegg.com there's a lot of information available there.
Best Regards,
Russ

My first build was a barebone. I miss that little computer :( I modified the heck out of that case :D I had it near silent, and cooling an overclocked Phenom 940 rather nicely. It originally had an MSI board. The onboard Nvidia chip ultimately failed though unfortunately. Pretty outdated tech though. Only 2 sata ports, and only supported as much as a 6000+ AMD dual core. Barebones can certainly do the job ;) I definitely like my second build more though.
The real question is what you want to do with it. Living room PC? HTPC's are pretty sweet! I built one for my brother. His family uses and loves it constantly!
Workhorse? Encoding? Gaming? Important factors to consider. Myself I do a lot of video encoding. So multi core Cpu's are a must. I plan to eventually play a great deal with Premier pro. So a suitable GPU will likely be in my plans.
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!
