ddp, we do seriously appreciate your general leniency. I'm sure a few of us would have bans by now if not for your understanding :)
I do try to think of Russ as he was a good friend and a mentor to me much like some other members have been. Ireland, Creaky, and Sammorris included. Russ spent many hours of his limited time left here helping me to learn better AMD OCing, and always had interesting stories to tell. He was going to be sending me a 990FXA-UD3 shortly before he passed. The box was sitting in his apartment with an address on it but no postage or anything. If anyone ever happens by him in the afterlife, be sure to drop him $50 for the shipping. I'll pay ya back when I follow :)

Norton isn't my favorite Fred but you are absolutely correct that it isn't the over-head hog it use to be for the personal users and I can see why you like it. My dad uses it now he switched from McCrappy because they have gotten worst actually. He has a friend that thinks Norton is the only way to go so that is why he has switched over. Since he uses it I still get to play with it as he needs help from time-to-time.
Just a heads up though, you can't put much weight on ratings derived, especially by magazines, online as they are typically biased, even more then benchmarks for computer gear. Who ever is paying for advertising is going to get the highest rating. If you look online you'll see several magazines all with their own favorite or best package and they won't all be the same provider.
When Jeff makes those absolute statements I can't hold back from letting one fly on occasion. It's all fun though. ;D
Steve
Your right Steve, is why I stick with MaximumPC, I have read tons of PC mags and most are bull, all suck up to their advertisers, Maxpc does not, thru the years they have pretty much been on the money, and again everybody has preferences anyway, I have learned a lot form that mag and not loaded with tons of advertising, again mostly you are right, many of those others the ratings and benchmarks suck.

Hey to all :). I'm still regularly following a small handful of long-running threads like this one, i just ran out of steam with the whole posting thing a long time ago, then i canned the moderating side of things as i ended up moderating far too literally, it didn't sit well with me how i found myself handling some people/situations on here so i stepped back from moderating, and it's probably been quite a long time now

Just an update. 990FXA-UD5 is here and installed as well as the rest of my fans. Everything works and runs A-OK. Not a DOA board lol *knock on wood* and a Rev. 3 so exactly what I was looking for. Seems promising to me. Prime 95 is impressive at stock settings. Maximum of 40*C after an hour. We'll see how it does when OC'd.
Also, no more modded chipset cooling for me. Idles at room temperature and haven't seen it higher than 30 yet. Very well cooled board :)
Also remember these are Prime 95 temps. Gaming never gets it that hot.

So the board manages only slightly better. Still limited to 4GHz by my cooler. Meh, that may have to be the next step. LOL I expected it.

That is true the target date is the 17th last I heard now whether that pans out is another question. The Kaveri is actually already out to a few select groups, computer builders, so the Kaveri (steamroller) will be here very soon.
I love my 990FXA-UD7 and the UD3 and my transcoding is now freaky fast so I'm in heaven. The NB is the biggest hurdle for OC'n AMD platforms and I wish the heatsinks were more uniform so that we could have an H2O cooling system for them.
Jeff, is the UD5 the old fashion BIOS or the UD3 style GUI BIOS? My guess would be it is still like the UD7 traditional BIOS.

This uses the UEFI GUI BIOS. I am usually a large proponent of pure OCing, but the GUI sure is nice... The board itself is quite well featured and well thought out. It looks great too, runs very cool, and seems to work just as well as any of my previous boards. Same old Gigabyte quality. They have continued to impress so far :)
I think there are options for reverting back to Legacy BIOs. I'll look into that and see what can be done. I think it may be an option only for the older Revisions.
Even without an increase in clockspeed, I was able to gain an increase in my NB clock and a decrease in the amount of voltage needed to achieve 4GHz, which certainly has benefits. I can't say I'm disappointed in the board. It does everything I could've asked of it.
Quote: The cooler in your sig? Looks like it's good size too! This is what I'm using.

I haven't done much overclocking. But it seems pretty capable, provided the ambient isn't over 78 - 80F.
Also remember I have server fans and a duct on it, so it's far from stock performance. Though I'd have to say yours would probably be better given the same changes. It's a direct pipe contact cooler just like mine, but more capable I think.
As far as OCing, 3.8GHz is easily within your reach. Any higher is where the difficulty comes, but I have some nearly foolproof settings for 3.8 if you're interested. No guesswork, just set it and go. Minimal stress even on a poorly cooled motherboard.

I've been at 3.8 on this board. Rock stable, and pretty cool. But the northbridge temperatures had me concerned. It's my hope, that another board will run cooler, allowing this chip to go further.

Absolutely. With a newer board, even 4GHz would be in reach.
May I ask how hot your NB was getting? The one on this 990 board hasn't gone past 40 yet on my horrible torture runs trying to push past 4GHz. At my rock solid 4GHz settings, it ran Prime95 all night and never topped 35 on the NB. Runs a teeny bit warm at 58 on the CPU, but regular usage never pushes near as high as Prime95 so am quite satisfied with that.

I recall seeing high 50's. 58 if memory serves.
This wasn't consistent, but it was enough to make me nervous. X264 encodes easily hit 55C. Been so long, I'm not even sure what my NB Voltage settings were. But it was necessary.

Oh ouch. Yep, I would be careful then. Mid 40s I'd say you're fine but... yeesh. I can't blame you for staying stock. I modded the chipset cooler on my 890 board for just that reason.
Also, read my edit on the last post.
Haha, just noticed that thread link. Funny stuff. Classic fanbois. Believe it or not, without them, PC gaming would be in trouble. You need the uneducated masses to pump money into everything. I say let 'em argue :)
