nero dvd copy resulting in dvd drive disappearing

I start nero and ask it o copya non-protected dvd
The program does complete making the temp backup image.
The laptop then locks up for at least 2 full minutes when even the mouse is non-functional.
Then i get the prompt to inset a blnk dvd which i do
Then nothing! The mouse starts working and when i check device manager and my computer i see tat the dv drive has dissappeared - that's it just dissappeared.

Can this be explained and is their a solution apart from trying to reinstall Nero which is a headache and takes an exceptionally long time!
