Hey, I hope someone can help me out. I never had a problem with Nero 8 before, but today when I tried to burn a couple movies, everything would freeze. I am on Nero 8.3.6.0. I ran it in simulation and it checked out fine. When it went to actual burning, everything locks up when used buffer would get to around 25%-28%. So far, I wasted 3 blank dvds. Only recent changes I can think of are reinstalling some nero aac encoder codecs and replaceing a case fan. Anyone else have the same thing happen to them? I do not know what to do next. I hate wasting discs. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Your sure the connectors weren't disturbed when you opened the case.
This is one good reason to have RW disks on hand.
To exclude Nero as the problem, download ImgBurn and burn a data disk (CD or DVD) or the VIDEO_TS folder.

Could be possible, I did remove and put back my hdd to get to the fan connector. I guess I could have pulled something by accident. I did play a burnt dvd from before and it plays fine. So the dvd rom is ok right? I shall try ImgBurn and report back. Thanks.

There goes coaster #4. The buffer read 100% and got up to the WriteLeadIn stage and my mouse stopped moving (just like nero). So it definitely is my burner. Could my burner go bad from burning so much? I noticed I could not lightscribe on first try lately. It would take a few tries then work or not work at all.

I just checked inside and could not see anything unusual. Crap, am I going to have to buy a new burner?

Get yourself some RW media, that'll solve the wasting disc issue, task manager can let you know what ram & pf is available as well as cpu usage while burn is in progress, the first thing i'd do is re-run the burn on RW media say around 3-4 times after shutting down all unnecessary processes if it works it will point to running processes taking up ram & pf or perhaps cpu

EDIT: Huh ! you only have one burner installed ? wtf.. :p

I think I might have a CD-RW or DVD-RW somewhere. I'll have to test run them tomorrow.

Can burners go bad from burning too much?
and why would I need more than 1 burner? Back up?

Burners fail like anything else the question is whether it's a burner issue,it was fine before along with nero so one would assume it's the burner.Main reason i have dual burner is in case the primary goes sad on me tho it does have other uses

If I do need another burner, can someone recommend me a decent lightscribe burner? Thanks.

Ok, I could only find a CD-RW and burnt some random vids to it and everything went ok after killing unnecessary processes in task manager. It looked like it only went to 51% in CPU usage. I'm going to try to burn a reg DVD-R now. I wish I could find that DVD-RW. Hope this doesn't become my 5th coaster.

If this doesn't work, I guess I have to get a new burner right? I sort of narrowed it down to this lightscribe samsung for $30. It had pretty good reviews. 2nd choice was this lite-on which was cheap. Others didn't have as good reviews or were too high in price.

Any thoughts for a fix or cause of the problem? I just want a final verdict before I pull the trigger on a new burner.

How would one get a copy of the burn log? I have never tried it. And I don't know if I could. When used buffer goes from 0% to about 25% everything locks up. Mouse doesn't move, I can't access task manager, nada. I have to manually turn off/on the pc.

when the burn process fails there should be a prompt to save a log.save it to your documents and post it here.with that log someone should be able to help.cheers.

So...I pretty much gave up and got a brand new writer Samsung sh-s223l. Plugged everything in, installed the new firmware, installed different nero 8 version and started to burn. Got to 1% and everything FROZEEEEE. What the fuck is going on?

Not the cause:
-burner
-program

Might be the cause:
-data cable going bad?
-psu going bad?
-something else internal?
-3 movie files just won't burn?
-bad dvds?

I do not know what to do next. I'll probably return the new burner. I'm not getting a HP built pc again. I had to change the motherboard, replace 2 fans, and now I can't burn dvds. I have been getting frequent blue screens of death lately. I guess it's from running too many things at once?

If you can have someone download and burn the Memtest file to a CD, you can test the ram.

My memory is the cause? I just maxed it out to 3.25gb not too long ago.

I might be able to do it myself. I've burned onto a CD-RW before. It is on DVDs that seems to freeze everything.

Which one am I putting onto a disc? Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)?
