Thanks for the ultra fast reply!!
I see. What would be the way to get the best quality (least noticable encoding) while still having audio in tact and all with DVDRB? Your help is very much appreciated!
THANK YOU
PS: I know this isnt supposed to be posted here, but I just got a copy of the new DVD Shrink 3.2, and when i go to backup mode the program freezes up. Any ideas why?

Oburi ... From the instructions at the beginning of this thread, it would be most appreciated if you would post your Shrink question in the Shrink forum: Thanks much:

That depends greatly from one disc to another, not to mention individual preferences and what software you use. My backups usually go something like this.
1. Rip the movie with DVD Shrink, removing any unwanted audio streams. If the menus are bigger than 100MB I usually compress with Shrink because DVD-RB can't do that yet (and even if I could it might not be worth the time required).
2. Edit the ripped files with DVD ReMake. At the very least I get rid of anything that plays before the main menu. I also remove any extras that I don't care about, especially if they're big enough to make a serious quality difference in the re-encoded movie.
3. Run Prepare in DVD-RB. If there is a lot of space devoted to extras, I normally set it to resize those to Half D1.
3a. If I have extras that are being resized or a source that I think needs some filtering, I use RB-Opt to make some changes. For Half D1 titles, I typically try to reduce the bitrate to exactly half of the original. I'm already handicapping them by using Half D1 so I don't want to reduce the quality any further than necessary. If I think it needs filtering I also add them here.
4. Use RBFarm to encode (usually in batches) with 2-3 computers.

You're welcome! Now let's see that Shrink problem posted in the appropriate forum so we can get that part working.

Hi,
That sounds like a good process. I need a way to know what kind of encoding im getting. Like i mentioned with the IVTC, i can check and adjust very easily. Its just that the audio is off, delayed. The video is perfect and the sound quality is fine. Any ideas?
thanks again

Are you actually getting poor quality encodes or do you just want to know what the quality will be ahead of time?
The best way to improve the quality of the backup is to remove stuff from the disc first, starting with unwanted audio which can sometimes be pretty big. If you're talking about seeing the encode quality ahead of time, there's no way to do it without encoding first. It's possible to encode just a segment or 2 if you want to check it, but I'll have to look for one of the places I've posted instructions for that because I'm too lazy to type it out again.

Oburi ... about ripping a disc with errors ... in referring to my post to you above, we are trying to keep this thread clean .. that is, only RB-CCE problems. You might get some good responses by posting this as a stand-alone thread in the DVD-R forum. (I've heard where some folks have resorted to taking the stream off of a regular player (because they skip errors) and re-encoding the stream.)

Doc is correct this is the wrong forum to discus Inverse Telecine. If I'm reading your question right you're trying to convert from NTSC to Pal, or 29.97 frames to 24? There've been some discussions regarding that here in this forum.

The only IVTC that should be done is what DVD-RB does for you. If it was originally Progressive (ie correctly encoded film) DVD-RB will already be encoding it as Progressive and then telecing it again during the rebuild. If it was incorrectly encoded (ie hard telecine) it's not correct to IVTC it because there's no telecine to reverse. In fact, because of the way chroma sampling works (and the fact that it has to be up-sampled to framserve to CCE), it will generally degrade the picture quality.

hi.
also are you suggesting for me to just prepare, encode and rebuild with dvdRB only? Without any other settings changes or anything like that?
thanks.

For the most part, yes. If you want to improve the movie, you could try some of the things I mentioned in my earlier post, but DVD-RB will encode the DVD just like the original, except for the lower bitrate.

do you use any other plug ins with dvdrb? like decomb and such? How would i make the quality come out very good just by plugging it through dvdrb?
thanks!

vurbal,

O.K. then,
I've installed AviSynth, then gone back to DVD rebuilder and clicked on encode.
Stuff is happening now so I'll just leave it and see what happens.
I'll keep you informed.

To hell with this.
It encoded fine but when I clicked on rebuild it comes up with another error (ooo3).
Looked back through this thread and tried an earlier version but that came up with the same error.
Thanks for everyones help but I'm sticking to Shrink.
It's less hassle.

agent-k...don't give up yet. The quality is well worth the effort. I thought I would go crazy before I got past the #0003 buffer overflow error myself.
I installed the RB-CCE software on top of a lot of worn out trials, and other freeware that I trusted had been properly removed. I finally did a clean install, and all my problems went away. The solution is simple ... it's just a pain in the butt.

Both versions are still installed but in separate folders.
I have versions 2.69 and 2.66 and they are both giving me this overflow message.
Should I uninstall them and start again?

I initially installed 2.67, got the buffer overflow, and then installed 2.69 ... and also got the buffer overflow ... with edited files. When I ran non-edited files, all went through without a problem, though.
My suggestion would be to rip a file with Decrypter, don't make any edits, and send it through. If it works, you will be able to see the quality that got us hooked on this app. It will also lend assurance that a clean install will help the problem.
The buffer overflow explanation, as I understand it, is that the errors are caused by non-compliant streams created during the editing process. I don't know enough about code to say much more, but I do know that a clean install fixed everything for me.

AgentK,
don't give up, I agree with doc, once you see it, you won't believe it. I'm curious tho, you said you clicked on rebuild? Once you hit transcode, that's it, you shouldn't have to do anything else except burn when the process is done.
I also got errors 0003 and 0004, when I went to CCE 2.67, not 2.66(?), they were corrected.
Believe me, once set up, it's lots easier than shrink, you choose source files and hit transcode, that's it. Rip with decrypter in file mode 1st and put that in your source folder, I call mine decrypter files for RB, imaginative, huh?
After all, you've spent 58.00 for CCE basic, don't let it go to waste yet. :)

Doc 409
I think I know where my problem may lie then.
To practice with RB/CCE I used a movie that was already on my had drive.
It had been decrypted and compressed with Shrink ready for burning.
I was only practising so I thought that would do.
Bigorange
I had it set on three click mode so that if it went tits up I could see on which process it failed.
One more question for you both. Does it automatically set the movie to the right size to fit a dvd-r or do I have to enter the size somewhere?

It automatically sets the size, all you have to do is ensure that your settings are correct.
