rick this mobo might really fit your needs. Biostar TPower I45 You save about $55 going with OpenBOX.
maybe one of these cpu's. link
I like the E8400 or the Q6600 personally. They both offer some real advantages and should be fast enough for your needs.
Is this the system for your grand-child?? If so you're building a nice little rig for them. :)

The Q6600 is a good choice for sure. If you do any encoding (DVD RB Pro) you will notice a time difference especially if you use Hank's Encoder. It uses all 4 cores IIRC. ;)
These 2 coolers are pretty good but if you need something a little "shallower" you might get suggestions from the other guys. :)

No, you don't spout crap! I know that 2000 was NT based, but it was a complete departure from Dos based 2000-Pro. They can call it any number they like, but with such an extreme departure from DOS, XP had a different core. Judging by all the early problems with XP, I would say they were having a difficult time integrating it all. How much of that original core is left as part of XP is anybody's guess, but it would have to be considerably modified. The current NT revision for Win 7 is NT 6.1.6933!
The slowest thing on any computer is Internal and I/O functions. In fact, they are not all that much quicker than they were back in the 486 days of the 90s. It's nothing new, M$ has been choking the life out of computers for years with their various O/Ss. Everything runs faster today, once a program is up and running, but they haven't improved much in internal functions or I/O. Memory demands have gone from 256kb to 2GB or more. Disk storage has grown from Megabytes to Terrabytes. CPU speeds have climbed from the 16MHz of the 386 to over 3GHz of a lot of chips today. I have a feeling that Win 7 was created with Core i7 in mind, with it not being tied to the fsb any longer, and the memory controller pipelines being so small, it should be considerably faster than any previous OS in X58! You know M$ is going to pull out all the stops on this one as they can't have a repeat of Vista, or another ME! They are sure to get it right this time, and you know that can only be good for us end-users and enthusiasts!

I agree with you 100% on the BioStar MB! Asrock's quality is decent, but not near as good as the BioStar's! I used to use Asrock motherboards for all my customer builds, but discovered that they easily made the warranty period, but started giving problems after 1 1/2 to 2 years. The quality of Biostar's components is simply better! I also use their 780G motherboards for AMDs, and I'm real happy with those as well!

im glad MS did rush out vista, how ever bloated it was, or else everyone would have been complaining that there wasnt going to be a new OS for 9 years.

XP was based on 2000, but the real 2000. I've not heard of 2000-pro, oh well.
I'd also agree on ASRock's quality being a bit so-so.
As far as Vista being MS' best OS though, the corporate attitude to it tells me that's just not true. Schools, large offices, global corporations all turning their back on it, I don't remember that happening before.

spamual - i'd previously asked you (politely) to be coherent and type properly, CAPS when required etc. Let's please see you typing properly as it is very irritating reading your posts.
People (i'm not talking about early adopters or fanboys etc etc, and i'm not hinting at anyone here) in general don't want or need a new OS too frequently, only if an existing OS is lacking in functionality or support for particular hardware/software. Also can you please start posting relevant experiences with the things that are discussed instead of endless internet links, most of us in here discuss things we have personally experienced.

I have only posted Internet links to either back up my points, OR to bring some news about the PC world to the thread....
I know most people do not need an OS frequently, but, IMO, 3 years is not frequent, especially in this hobby we have where 6 months can make some items obsolete. Microsoft usually did put out OSes every 3 years, but XP to Vista was a major exception, and the delay was a long time. Some people like to moan about a lot of things, and one I remember was how much Vista was being delayed. But, as soon as it came out, there were now complaining it was a rushed OS...
When ever microsoft do something, there will always be the bashers, no matter what, and it annoys me. Either get one and use the new thing, or dont, but do not go spreading FUD and acting as if the company is the bane of the industry, especially when you are using their products (this is not to anyone here, but a generalisation of my experience of people and Vista, on many blogs/real life/forums around)

Good stuff if you have experience as well as links, was just giving my interpretation.
My Vista comments in this thread (or others) aren't to bash Vista, i think i've been balanced in my views. The bigger picture here is what the general world population think of Vista (ie many millions of people), and the proof of the pudding is we will finally (hopefully) get a worthy (and more importantly, usable) successor to XP. It's also proof that a company just can't create an OS that only runs on newer faster hardware and expect the whole world to replace perfectly good hardware just to run the OS . I'm just glad i didn't waste time with Vista when it's going to be replaced with something that i'd have expected XP's successor to be in the first place. As i say, i have a fairly recent Quad Core machine and a few Dual Cores but i still want the most perfomance out of those machines. I use DVD Rebuilder for instance, which uses all the resources it can find (well CPU cores anyways), which is fine, as it's an application; i wouldn't be best pleased if the OS was using more oomph than it should be as that takes oomph away from the important things ie the applications.
Anyways, i hadn't read/heard anything about Windows 7 until yesterday and i'm very glad that i have now as i can finally plan on replacing XP (which up to now was only going to be replaced by more Linux machines).
I don't know or care if Windows 7 is Vista underneath or not, all that matters to me is whether it will run acceptably on my hardware. And whether it will run on the new raft of (lower powered) mini notebooks, and luckily it sounds as if it will.
It goes to show that even the monster that is Microsoft have realised they need to cater for more than just the minority who have the latest and greatest hardware. Again this isn't a bash at Microsoft, it's a thumbs up from someone who (like half the known world) wanted something better performing for existing/and lesser hardware.

if your worried about the coolers that Greensman pointed out fitting in the SMILODON. the ACF 7PRO isnt as tall as it looks in the picks. it will fit nicely in the SMILODON with plenty room. i was worried about it myself but it is smaller than the pics show it.
with the options now of the E8400 right now, getting the E0 stepping is the way to go. and you should easly get the E0 Stepping now. like the others have said the Biostar TPower I45 is a very nice board, and combined with the E0 stepping E8400 it is a very good combination ans Russ pointed out a while back it has the worlds record for OC with the E8400.
Yes im a little Bias towards the E8400, but it is a awsome chip. and with the OC i have there is nothing that it cant do. now on that note it cant run the quad programs such as hanks encoder that GM mentioned,but there are few programs useing the quads full abilities. yes in the future im sure it will but when in the future is these programs comeing out?
$169 E8400
microcenter has it for 159.sometimes on sale for $139. that is dirt cheap for it
got my 250gb hdd(ide) in the hp rig now formating.once done gonna put it back in TBRM. and try a fresh install and see if i can get into the bios then,
Russ i tried the f12 button and still nothing is going on.
EDIT:
well formating the hdd didnt help.once the power button is pushed the fans and light and such run for 1 min 6sec. thats plenty long enough to get the gigabyte logo up and start windows... im getting nothing on the monitordont flash or nothing. is this my problem? would a faulty GPU cause the system to start and stop like this? gotta find a GPU and see if it is my problem.

I've just bought an Acer Inspire One, i might try installing it on that.

It's an OS! It either does the job or it doesn't. If it doesn't, try something else! Mostly it has more to do with available drivers for new hardware than anything. It's not necessary to bring out a new OS just because the hardware has improved The OS can only work with the hardware if there are decent drivers for it! As long as M$ supports it, it should keep in step with any new hardware, via new upgrades periodically! The only reason an OS becomes obsolete is if they don't support it!
To my minds eye, a new OS should be an improvement all around with more function and better speed. How many years has XP-Pro been around? Now we have SP-3 and XP is finally about where it should have been when it was released. Even Vista, which was bog slow when it first came out has improved tremendously. It's still not as fast as XP Pro SP-3 yet, but it will get there, given enough time! Win 7 should easily outperform both Vista and XP-Pro, so that's a good thing for us all! About damn time M$ did something right! LOL!!

orry for the triple post in Advance.
Alright, so it was just a bad burn. I burnt it at 2x and it worked fine. Currently running on a Athlon XP 2200+ with 768MB of RAM and a 5 year old VIA Integrated graphics chipset. I cant turn on the eyecandy because of the Integrated graphics.
Anyway, I have 5 IE windows open(and each Windows has tabs open) and several windows explorer things open as well. It still feels SNAPPY of all things, almost as fast as XP. Vista would kill this computer, and this is an ALPHA release. Oh and ram usage is around 525 MB.
