Some interesting results there. The 965 chip really is a winner, but really is expensive. Even the 940 seems to be almost double the performance of the Q6600.

That's true, it doesn't affect gaming performance much.

I'm waiting for benchmarks from more mature motherboards. I haven't even thoroughly looked at any yet, but from what I have heard it's kickin ass in non-gaming benchmarks.

i agree. a c2q will be more than enough for the next few years. but i7 did help in some multi gpu situations. some games get cpu limited in crossfire and sli

http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i7-mu...rmance-review/7

but i7 is really for servers and workstations were alot of multithreading is needed. it will also be good for video editing and other cpu intensive work. there is more than just gaming.

i never said it wasnt for those things, nor did i discredit it, it doesnt do the job i personally need :D

plus with my shiney new 4870X2 and Q9550 and MAximus II formula, it would be a waste if i bought it aswell hehe.

friday should be up and running under water :D

they need to add a QX9770 to that. an E8400 obviously wont be enough, we found that out with sams findings.

@spam

what happened to the E8600? i thought that was what you were going to get?

in defense of my beloved E8400. that comparison of a C2D and I7 cpu for the GTX 260. thats like compareing a supped up hot rod to a factory pinto. there is no comparison. just like comparing a C2D to a P4 its not fair or realistic...how is comparing something with 6-8 cores to something with 2 even thought to be fair?????

no boozer, IMO faster dualcore>slower quad

BUT crossfire needs a quad, so i was forced to go that way.

the thing is greensman, they are comapring dual to quad, they shoudl compare a Q9550 to the 920

even comparing the dual to quad isnt fair. well thats if it is useing all 4 cores??? if it was 2 cores vs 2 cores and had those scores than that would be amazing...but in the quads defense it isnt fair to it if they were compared to the I7's. same concepts.

dont get me wrong once im back to work and back on track again i will be getting me a Quad as well. im hopeing the Q9650 will be down to a poor mans price range so i can get one..lol

Fast dual core > Slower Quad. But you bought a Fast Quad! :)

Has anyone else used 3dmark vantage?
I scored X7166 and P12665. No idea how good that is...

well guys after haven my system shut down and start back up again. i finally figured out the real problem.. i got a bad stick of memory.
i took out both sticks, put 1 back in, in the #1 slot kept doing the same thing.so i tried the same stick in slot 2, same thing.
i then got the other stick put it in slot 1 and it fired right up no problems. pluged everything else back in 1 at a time and all worked fine.

so im down to 1gb of mem for now... man can i kick myself in the ass for takeing back the 1066 mem..lol so what kinda performance am i gonna miss by only haven 1gb of mem compared to 2gb

anyone ever tried this mem? not to sure of it myself the reviews on it isnt to good. if ya go by the reviews you'd e a fool to get them.

Well, gaming is pretty much out altogether, but everything else should work without too much of an effect.
Unlucky, you've had a lot of dud hardware... :(

well tbh sam. it has all come back to this crucial memory.... all my problems in the begining of this build went back to the crucial 1066 mem not working with my mobo. oncei got the ddr2 800 double sided mem it was fine...and the problem now once again is back to the crucial mem failing..but in the mean time i have gotten 2 new mobo,2 new cpu's. lol

so for gameing your saying im gonna have problems with COD4?

I use a fair bit more than 1GB RAM playing COD4 but then I have the settings all on high and don't shut down all my background applications first.
To be honest, your experience with the PC8500 was enough to put me off Crucial memory, no matter the type. That's not to say I was expecting definite issues with the PC6400 stuff, but there you have it I suppose - time to ditch Crucial methinks.

I'll be trying out some of Corsair's PC8500 stuff in less than a week, so I'll report back on that, but I daresay you will probably want your replacement RAM sooner... :P

Rob,
For one you will only be single channel on the memory, instead of dual channel! Run a quick Sandra Memory bandwidth and I think you'll probably see a little hit there! Encoding will probably be a little slower too! Still, it's a fast computer to begin with. At least it's working!

well i had to try for my own experience. was playing COD4. was at the farriswheel waiting on the chopper to extract us,plenty of gun fire,C-4,claymores going of...then bammmmmm it froze up on me..lol

i am gonna contact crucial and have them RMA this mem.. good for a back up when in need...

Russ
i was just thinking that about Sandra. going to give that a go after this post. yes it is running now. and thankfully i now know the true culprit of my problem.

EDIT:
heres sandra mem bandwidth test

cincyrob,
Here's my memory bandwidth, just for comparison.

Even with 800MHz memory, it was still 7200+MB/s

Don't know if you can swing this but here's some 1066 Corsair Dominators for $24 after a $30 MIR. Over the last 4 years I've tried G.Skill, PNY, Kingston and Corsair XMS. The Dominators have been outstanding so far. They run extremely cool at 1066MHz @2.1v, with no need for fans.

Best Regards,
Russ

Mind posting the link to that deal for the americans out there? I don't see it.

Me, I'll be spending somewhat more than $24. £85 in fact.
