I would just tell them I printed before finding out the discs were defective. Within reason of course. How many have you got printed and how many out of the batch are actually bad? With Verbatim, they may just replace the ones with the obvious manufacture defects if that's all you want replaced. There again, you'd need to contact them to see what they will do. On the labeling there should be a phone number and/or email or net address to make contact with. I found it on a pack of Sony I have in the microscopic print.

I used 3 before noticing it and about the first 20 are like that and as it moves lower down the spindle it gradually gets better. I think i'd have a hard time trusting any in this spindle. Ive used verbatims before and liked them but like you said this was probably a bad run. I just hope if all they will do is replace them that all of sams's verbatims arent bad.

I'd try it anyway. If you tell them you didn't notice this until after printing on the disc they'll probably take them back anyway. As far as I know Sam's doesn't rerap stuff that's brought back for a defect and put it back on the shelf. Unlike Fry's Electronics. I've seen stuff in Fry's on the shelf with a return to manufacturer sticker on it. I presume that Sam's will send them back to Verbatim, probably. At the very minimum they should give you another package of DVDs that you can look at before you leave. Sam's and Walmart are both pretty good about taking things back. I use the same DVDs and haven't had any problems wirh them. You can get a bad batch with any brand, though. It's just a lot more common with some brands. Verbatim generally isn't one of them as long as they're MCC coded.

Even Sam's likes to see a brand label on the package so it resembles a product they sold. I'm not saying shrink wrap and all that, just the container with a label. I'd already agreed with Dave that Sam's will likely take the items back and overlook labeling just a few. They'd probably take it back with quite a few if you told them the problem became apparent the more you tried to use the discs. They don't usually argue with the customer. They do like to see the purchase receipt along with returns. You have 2 options, I'd try Sam's first as that is usually the easiest.

Glad you could get your problem resolved easily. Some aren't so lucky. Goes back to buying from reliable outlets. One should always strive to do so, and Sam's and Wal Marts have good customer relation policies. BTW, you're welcome.

The Update Disc has a # 1-800-613-3811. I'm not sure if that's the one I called or not. It also says part#DVD542-4 on the disc. Hope that helps.

Dave,
Thanks for reply.
Yeah, I found that number on the net, but it is defunct, and when you call it now some robot offers to take me to their 1-800 directory assistance which will supposedly (more like might) be able to tell me the correct number for "only" $4.00.
Could you have dialed a different number you might have around somewhere?
Or would you consider emailing me the .iso zipped ? - it can't be very big to just burn firmware.
I burned some Maxell DVD-R 8x (RITEK KG05 from Taiwan) in my NEC1300A with Herrie's updated firmware, and it plays fine in my computer, but hangs after about 30 seconds in the Toshiba SD-4800.
Thanks for whatever help you may be able to offer.

You should have it.
Disk says:
Put it in and let it start. It will start automatically. When 'Update Yes/No' shows up do not perform any operation although it looks like you should. Disc will eject when completed. Turn the player off and on again.

i have used the office max discs for about a year and buy them in spindles of 100. out of that number i average one or two that are defective, which i don't think is too bad. the usual cost is &59 per 100, but they often have sales. they tell me that they are imation with their name on them.

Moser Baer India Limited
Fuji Film
CMC Magnetics Corporation
Ricoh Company Limited
That's the short list on manufacturers of Imation +/- R DVDs. There's only one "Company" in there that I like and they manufacture only +R media, unless they recently changed. A person can read the label to make sure they're not getting a manufactured in India product. Sort of like Sony in reverse. Buy the made in Japan Sony and get Yuden or Mitsubishi. Don't buy made in India and miss the Moser Baer... (The made in Taiwan Sonys are good as well, sort of nice with Sony, so far their products from Japan and Taiwan have proven to be pretty good). I haven't tried any of their other international offerings yet.
Getting back to Imation, one of the main reasons I stopped using them was because it became so difficult trying to figure out which product I was getting. Once you have a pack home to check out, it's too late, already purchased. With CMC I had a poor experience. It was when Memorex first went with them in the +R line. It had been Ricoh "Company" before. A 20% failure rate is something I won't go along with. About 1 in 5 turned out coasters. With the different choices available, I've just stayed away from CMC, which includes the Imation brand. Maybe they've improved, but I've not been willing to spend the "dime" to find out. I'll spend a few cents more per disc for the Sonys. I've found them to be worth it. I've gotten some coasters, but it wasn't a media problem. LOL

Purchased PHILIPS DVD=R spindle 1-8x. After backing up movie with COPYDVD, was completed without any errors. When watching backups, the movie skips in several area of the movie. Received 80% errors based of the number of tries. Tested burn with Verbatim and that copy came out flawless. Might be a firmware issue. Appears to burn data ok. Purchased from Micro Center in Plano, TX. Were on sale for $9.99 for a spindle of 50.

Check one of the Philips and one of the Verbatim with DVDInfoPro or DVD Identifier and give us the manufacturing codes. You can copy the codes into notepad and then copy and paste the results in the reply message box here on AD. Both apps mentioned are freeware. You can also use DVDInfoPro to run a read/write error test on one of the recorded Philips discs.
Quote: Received 80% errors based of the number of tries.
Are you saying that 80% of your DVDs failed to record properly, as in 8 out of 10 are coasters. Or, was that 8 out of ten would just have the skipping errors. It could be firmware or just lower quality media. That sounded awful cheap even on sale. Also what CopyDVD app are you referring to. There's a number of programs with that name. It wouldn't hurt to check for a firmware update. That's always the first thing to do when you run into a problem with different media. Usually it's easily checked at the manufacturer's support site.

One of the reasons I like using Nero is because when having a problem, there's a good log of the burn process. A lot of apps don't have that logging function. You can download the trial version of Nero 7 and burn with it and post the log in the Nero section. That is if the problem shows up in the log. Sometimes you just have a combination of an app that doesn't handle compression well and an inferior media, and when combined you get a problem. Also, when was the last time the optical head was cleaned?

Media: HP 8x DVD+R
ID: CMC MAG 01
Merch: Fry's Electronics
Drive: Emprex 16x DL
Without understanding the importance of quality with dvd media, the first batch of dvds that I purchased were HP 8x dvd+r's. The first couple of burns were great, but after the first 10 burns I started getting a coaster after every other burn. I burned through the first pack trying to figure out the reason for the errors. I believe out of the 50 burns I made a total of 13 coasters. Thats when I found this site and discovered the importance of quality dvd media.
Following some advice from the users of this forum I Picked up some verbatims today and after several burns I haven't had any problems yet. In addition, The verbatims scored a 95 on the nero quality test as opposed to the *0 that was scored by the HPs. The bottomline is that HP dvds are horrible and Verbatims are great.

you got that right buddy~ :) anything made by the notorious CMC MAG will give you problems, well, at least for approx. 99% of the consensus here on AfterDawn they have~ :)
so, it's good that you've moved on to bigger and better quality media, the MCC coded Verbs are VERY GOOD in my opinion, right up there with my coveted Taiyo Yudens...
may you have continued burning success...happy holidays.

(from Brobear a bit further up the page) - Quote: One of the reasons I like using Nero is because when having a problem, there's a good log of the burn process
- absolutely, the logs summarise a system's adequacy for burning very well, though in 7.x some things are less easy to pick out as opposed to how it was in 6.x, ie the ATAPI drivers aren't listerd in the 'Existing drivers' section.
..though i don't mean to digress..
..as to quality of media.... indeed... media is one of THE most importants aspects of burning DVD's..

Interestingly enough, not all Verbatim is Mitsubishi (MCC). Some of the media is manufactured by CMC Magnetics as well. The user is safe with the DataLifePlus, but the lower end is where the CMC is found. What is the manufacturer's code on the media you're referring to? Using Nero, DVDInfoPro, or DVDIdentifier will list those codes. When referring to media, it is best to refer to it by the manufacturer code and brand. Just stating a brand alone doesn't tell us what is being used.
Even companies that manufacture their own media often sell media sold by others. I like to refer to Sony as an example. Sony has it's own media manufactured in Taiwan, and possibly some other locations. They also sell as Sony some Taiyo Yuden media. One of the reasons I like Sony, the "made in" tells you what you're buying before you take it home, at least for now. I was just out to SAM's and picked up some Sony-Taiyo Yuden media for about 40 cents per disc in packs of 75. Weird packaging, the wrap contained a 50 and a 25 spindle. BTW, I've used both the Taiwan Sony and the Japanese Sony-Taiyo Yuden media with good results. When the Yuden media isn't available, I'm okay with buying the Sony from Taiwan.
On the matter of those HPs. A bit strange, I wasn't aware that HP had gone with CMC. In the past they'd been manufactured by the same manufacturer as the better Verbatim, MCC. That's why it's a good idea to check what media is actually being used, not just the brand name. Nowadays, the brand doesn't really tell us much in a lot of cases. Seems the selling brands tend to use different manufacturers' merchandise to the point that the consumer can't be sure what he is actually getting much of the time.
