Nice advertisement for SMS. However, as it happens, I ordered 100 of the 8x premium TY from SMS a month ago and now swear by them---not at them. They produce consistently superior quality burns, even much better than the 16x Ty I was using. the Nero quality scan comes in at a consistent 93 or 95% and the PI failures at 2-400. And, I have never had a playback problem.

Put one in a USB enclosure and you can burn 3 at a time. Done it several times for fun. With crappy media to boot! Works every time.

Have a question? You would think I know this BUT this question was asked to me and I could not be 100% sure, so I told them I would get back w/ them and came to where the answer would be....does scratches on top of a disk effect the play back?

I was daring at the last computer swapmeet and picked up some 8x TY DVD-R Value $24/100pcs. Got them home and they coded out at TYG02s, double checked them and the inner hub marking was GG007424. So I was happy. I had bought lots of media from them before just not Taiyo Yudens. My bud bought some unknown brand (he said he just bought whatever). I asked him for a sample and it coded out as TYG02s as well but I'm not sure what to make of the inner hub markings (8-C2010502)? Can some one help me out? It's a white printable top by the way where as mine are silver tops.

herrick they can but usually the scratches would have to be pretty bad. light scuff marks won't hurt

@cincyrob
I didn't think they were that bad! Better than soso :)
I'll try and post some scans by tomorrow doing one now on the Pioneer.
@herrick
I would think the scratch would have to be pretty deep on the top to affect playback.
@Playr
Looks like you got the real deal but your friend didn't. The printable ones have the same inner hub code bit as the non printable (silver) do.
So whoever made your friends disc faked the media id on them.

Thats what I thought, but dont like to give someone answers for the sake of answering- they also mentioned some pits in the disks, would that be deffective disks or something else? I would think if they are pits they might be breaking the layer?

Well herrick all discs have pits in them. Lands too. It's how they're read - lands are 1 (on) pits are 0 (off) (binary code that the pc understands)
But it can't be seen by the naked eye but by the laser of the drive.
That's about as technical as I can get in this stuff :)
So I'm guessing they mean deep scratches on these?
Still many not be a problem if on the top.
