Those TY's code exactly like my Sony MIJ(made by TY) DVD+R X8 that I have. Same media ID and same code on the inner hub.

I'm having a little trouble with my Nero cd-dvd speed scans. First of all, the scans don't show the PI Failures and secondly the speed on the bottom right corner is always around 1x even though I set the speed to 4x (kinda similar to some of Tokijin's scans before he cross flashed it).

I tried to look up for firmware for my Philips dvd+-rw dvd8701 but couldn't find any. After some research, I found some people said that Philips 8701 is a rebadged of BenQ 1640. So I'm wondering rather cross flashing would help? What is the main advantage of cross flashing it? And could someone please tell me how to do that as I have no clue what cross flashing means.

Yujenh,

the datalifeplus's used to be a better grade but it makes no difference anymore. all verbatim now should be made by mitsubishi chemical company with the exception of some being made by taiyo yuden but these are not available in the states. stay away from the pearl whites as they were being made by cmc mag but are now made by ritek.

Hmm. Crossflashing to a BenQ 1640 was very easy for me. However, make 100% sure that your drive is an OEM BenQ 1640. If you want to cross flash, here's how.

1. Download the latest BenQ DW 1640 Firmware BSOB here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2053 Then decompress (unzip) it.

2. Download Quikees BenQ Flash utility: http://quikee.cdfreaks.com/BQFlasher.zip

3. Decompress the BenQ Flasher to the same directory as your
Nero WNASPI32.DLL file. Get it here: http://www.nero.com/nero6/en/WNASPI32.DLL.html

4. Make sure your DVD-ROM drive is empty, and all other programs are shut down, this is the last chance to turn back!!! Run the BQFlasher.exe file. It should detect your current drive. Select your writer. Click the open firmware button and browse to your BSOB.exe firmware file. Click it and then click open. Then click flash. It'll let you know if it's successful afterwards and prompt you to reboot. Crossflash at your own risk. Good Luck!

Anyway time to spice this thread up:

Some Scans:

Tiger Woods 2006 on TYG02:

on MCC:

Castlevania Curse of Darkness on TYG02. This is from months ago, when I had no concept of firmware, left programs open while burning, not pretty, but okay considering the circumstances:

@Tokinjin buddy,

So you finally cross-flashed your DRU 810 to the BenQ1640? Good for you. Those are some nice scans afterall.

Thanks Alky. Got tired of the lack of PI/PO scanning, WOPC, SolidBurn, auto booktyping, and overspeed. Sony's firmware blows. My burn quality was good. But the features of the OEM drive were absent. The BenQ Firmware is so feature packed, it wasn't a hard decision. Now it's got full compatibility with Qsuite and all the features of the BenQ 1640. I'm curious about Liteon and Plextor drives. I dunno if I will get a new burner in the new feature, but BenQ, Liteon, and Plextor would probably be my main candidates. Those seem to be the ones that get the most positive feedback all around.

Here's some more pretty scans:

Tales of Legendia on Maxell002:

Mafia on Yuden000T02:

The Moral of the story: I'm starting to see why DVD+R's are superior to DVD-R's. Almost all my DVD+R scans have fewer max PIF spikes than DVD-R's. I get good results with both, but Yuden000T02 has become my favorite media. I will try some Verb DVD+R's at some point though, I've been told their almost identical to TY DVD+R's in quality.

@Tokijin

Glad everything worked for you buddy. See, I've told you that cross-flashed is risky, but it is "capable" and or inevitable.

Yes, I've always been a DVD+R "book typing" into DVD-ROM person from the beginning since the existence of DVD+R. I, too, strongly deemed that DVD+R is/are more advanced/superior than DVD-R.

Believe it or not, I've never had any defected/bad batch using YUDEN00T02 at all, whatsoever period, unless it's my (an operator's) fault. All my backups all has worked 100% flawlessly, regardless if it's PS2 backups or DVD movies backups.

I think once my DRU710A/rebadged SOHW 1633S going south, I'll definitely get the new BenQ for sure.

Yeah I'm torn there. I'd like to get the BenQ 1650, I have little worries as to its reliability. With the succesful cross flash, I certainly don't need a new burner. But what you want and what you need don't always jive lol. Maybe I'll just wait like you. I doubt my burner is going to give out anytime soon. Your litey/Sony has been going strong for a couple years now, correct?

just thought i'd copy/paste my comment re my Verb TY discs from this thread here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/295762

i've been burning all weekend (i never want to see another disc again!), but at 8x since i dug out a load of unused tubs of Verbatim +R (MCC003).

Normally i have to do 4x even on my top notch Verbatim TY (the only burn speeds my LG drives offer on the Verb TY 4x and 8x) but i can only rarely do any at 4x otherwise i get coasters at the lead-in stage at 8x. Now since i popped in an MCC003 disc in one of the LG drives (i should mention here i haven't used any MCC003 or MCC004 since i bought the LG drives) i had 4x, 8x and even 12x available to me, so i started doing 8x (one of the LG's is even USB2.0 connected) and i have done literally 100s of flawless 8x burns over last few days, the drives have stormed thru discs like a flamethrower, a few of those burns were even done as dual burns ie thru Nero's 'multiple recorders' tickbox which i only recently discovered :)

So, being as the Verbatim TYG02 seem to be like gold dust in the UK i've bought up a load of MMC004 (had only used a few of these when they first came on the market), and i'll no doubt be burning all of them at 8x, my remaining 1000 odd Verb TY i have will have to stay at 4x.

Sounds to me like i need either better quality burners ie maybe the LG aren't that good after all, or i need to find a way to tweak the firmware to allow consistent 8x burns on the Verb TY...

I'm not sure about that Jurgen. Before I cross flashed my Sony DRU-810A, I had the same issues. When I would set the CD/DVD speed scan to 4x, it would scan around 1x and they took forever. After I cross flashed, scans take 15-20 minutes and it scans at 4x. Sorry, I forgot what kind of burner you had, could you please repost it? Thanks.

Below please find ID of EMTEC(French) DVDs I bought recently (in Europe). They are manufactured by TY.

I tried to produce 5 backups with these DVDs with my LG drive HL-DT-STDVDRAM GSA-4081B, firmware A106. 4 of the backups were unusable...

I NEVER had such bad results with other brands. Actually I seldom have
any coaster with other brands... Any possible explanations, please?

Is your firmware up to date? Is your burner in DMA mode?

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

82. Q. When I'm burning with DVD Decrypter or Nero I get an I/O error or some other strange error, I'm not sure my burner is in DMA mode, and I'm confused about different media, what do I do?

@creaky

I have burned TDK branded TaiyoYudens at 8x since Xmas without issues. I'll be swithching to Verbs after stack is gone. I have done a couple of the verbs at 8X, no problems. I have two LG drives myself the lastest external 2166D. I thought I had a TDK drive but it is also an LG 440N. Unfortunately I cannot do the quality check with Nero. Unsupported with my drives. I will have one that can do test in near future. Either a plex or benq. Thanks for heads up for feature of multiple recorders tick box in Nero. I have 6.6 and have not seen that option.

Does the dvd type affect the burn speed? My memorex wont let me read at the speed I want, but for writing I found out that they wont write at 1x. DVD Decrypter gives me an option of the write speed, but not the read speed.

When I select 8x, it starts out at 3x then works its way up to 6x during the read process. Will this affect the quality? If it does, then is there a way to make dvd decrypter read at the speed I want it to?(I asked something similar to this in the other forum, but I guess no1 knows how) I should be getting my TYs in the mail tomorrow, so I want to know how to use them to their fullest potential.

garre, the read speed isnt important you cant control that ,its the burn speed you want to control. the burn speed of the media is either 4x,8x or 16x dont overburn the media and dont burn above 8x

"1. Download the latest BenQ DW 1640 Firmware BSOB here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2053 Then decompress (unzip) it."

So I don't need to download the earliest firmware and then update to the latest one?

"3. Decompress the BenQ Flasher to the same directory as your

I already have that file in my Nero directory. But what if I were to uninstall Nero in the future (for upgrading or whatever)? Would that affect anything?

One last thing before I crossflash my Philips: what are the main advantages of crossflashing to BenQ? Would the burn quality be better? Thanks a bunch.
