It won't convert but it is the best compression software out there when paired up with CCE. The pro vs will edit, make ISO's and automatically burn with dvdd or imgburn just to name a few things.

@Tokijin: BenQ 1650, eh? Does it have some special features that the Lite-On 1693S doesn't? The reason I ask is I'm considering replacing my DVD-ROM drive with another burner, just to have a backup or a second drive that might produce better results with different high-grade media (like maybe if I start getting TYs and Verbs consistently, one might burn TYs best, another the Verbs).

Anyone else is welcome to chime in on the merits of the BenQ 1650, too, especially if they have some TY-related praise to go with it (as this IS the official TY thread! ;).

Thanks!

i already have my order in for 2 of the Benq dw-1650s, paid about $60 each for the OEM version, according to my order, they HAVE BEEN SHIPPED, however, i have not received any tracking info nor any kind of emails from the company i have ordered them from thus far...making me a little skeptical about the whole thing, but, i am in the process of getting a straight answer from ncix (the U.S. based ordering one-it's a Canadian website, but they have a "sister" site for U.S. orders) :)

as to what "perks" the 1650 has, well if you see from my comments in the earlier pages of this thread, i told everyone that i would be one of the FIRST people here in the U.S. with the new benq and i am just following thru on my claim... :) the new benq 1650 will be a "TRUE" benq, ie. retaining the Philips chipset, not the crappy panasonic chipset that was used in the DQ60 and the upcoming 1670, i'm not basing this on mere "speculation" either when i "bash" the DQ60 and the upcoming 1670, my friend actually got the DQ60 as he was too impatient at the time to wait for the 1650 or even the 1655 for that matter, he's updated the firmware to the most current and STILL has issues in his burns on BOTH formats of media, regardless of brand (even though he uses TY exclusively after he talked to me) LOL

he's thoroughly disappointed in the DQ60, and the 1670 will be it's successor....the dw-1650 is the successor of the now infamous 1640 that i use frequently, and it still has the same chipset (1620, 1640, and now the 1650 follow this design) :) as to what "perks" it gives over the Liteon 1693S, well, that's based on the user (and in my case, i own both...)

i use different drives for different types of burns...ie. i use my Pioneer/Sony/Liteon drives for DVD-R format and i use my Benq burners for everything dvd+r/dvd+r DL related~ :) being that i'm a big "dvd+r" booktype to dvd-rom guy, i use my Benq more often than any of my other drives at this point...it simply burns the DVD+R TYs FAST and with very high quality scores~ :) the Liteon that we both have is GREAT on DVD-R, it's good on DVD+R too, but in all honesty, since i own both the Liteon and Benq 1640, the benq is "better" at DVD+R ~ :)

when you have quite a few drives at your disposal, it takes a little time to figure out which drives burn to which medias "better"...it's a "preference" thing...some drives will burn to Verbatim MCC "better" than TYs, and vice-versa holds true too...just gotta find the "sweet spot" as i always say in what your drives appreciate~

i can honestly say that my Liteon burns TYG01/TYG02/TYG03s "better" than my Benq 1640, whether this remains true once i get my Benq 1650...we'll find out when i receive it as i'm going to bombard it with DVD-R tests~

have a good one

docTY~

Sounds like the BenQ 1650 is going to be a great drive. Keep us updated when you receive it and post some scans. Cheers!

@docTY: Yet another amazing, informative post by our thread sponsor! Thanks, doc. :) It definitely sounds like a good drive. I'm VERY interested in that Benq now, since my Lite-On has produced three flawless (100% quality) DVD+Rs so far, each one burned pretty much to the edge of the disc (using a quickscan, a full scan could certainly be a tad lower than 100%). I imagine that the Benq probably produces lower PIFs with few to no PIEs? If so, then that is definitely the drive I want to replace my DVD-ROM with! Of course there are other factors to take into consideration, such as how well does it rip discs, and how well does it read various formats, but that tends to be taken care of by simply getting a couple of different drives, which will usually cover all the bases. Any thoughts on those areas, docTY, as to ripping/reading between the Benq and the Lite-On?

Thanks again for the info!

@aabbccdd: That's good to know. I was beginning to assume that, but I'd much rather know for sure from someone who has done more burning than I have. Thank you!

@beltline: I did some Googling and found out the 1655 also uses the Phillips chipset. I may just go ahead and get one of those, even though I don't see myself using the Lightscribe feature. I've been reading a few people's experiences with the 1655 and so far the results seem to compare to prior models based on the same chipset.

Cheers!

Does anyone know how to engage the turbo on the Sony DRU-810A? It's max DVD read speed is 12x and 40x for CD's. The max capabilities are 48x and 16x.

Woohoo. I finally figured out how to cross flash my drive to a BenQ. Now overspeed and PI/PO scanning are fully supported!!! I had to use Quickee's BQFlasher utility, worked like a charm. CD Freaks was a huge help on this one. A couple questions. Though the Yuden000T02 scan shown here had some PIF spikes, a couple others came up as 0. That can't be accurate, right? This happened on two other Yudeb000T02's. Why would this be? Any ideas? Here's my first accurate scans with Nero CD/DVD Speed:

Dragon Quest VIII on TYG02:

Star Wars Battle Front 2 on Yuden000T02:

Tales of Legendia on Maxell MIJ High Grade:

Tiger Woods 2006 on MCC:

My first burn, BSOB is the current firmware for the BenQ1640, correct?

Fatal Frame on Yuden000T02:

@Tokijin: While I can't be sure that my results are accurate, either, I can confirm that I get zero PIFs on the majority of the TY's I've burned so far. I'd post a pic, but I don't know how. :) Maybe I'll figure that out sometime. :) Anyway, with one exception, all my TY's (four or five) have come up with zero PIFs and 100% quality. The one exception to this had a single PIF spike at the very end and came up 100% anyway.

@mort81: No, I wouldn't expect that, since it's just a sample, and a rather small one compared to the amount of data on the disc, but I'm comparing apples to apples, since Tokijin is doing quickscans himself.

@tom1991 and catfreak

I tested a couple of those MCC 004 last night at 16X and returned 98 scores. That was burning out to 4462. So I am going to say catfreak is correct. At 4x the highest I got was 94.

I'm off this subject now since I feel like we are hijacking Doc's thread.

Sorry Doc :(

no worries~ :) catfreak and i are BOTH strong supporters of burning faster using QUALITY MEDIA and QUALITY DRIVES...when we talking about Benq drives (1620, 1640, 1655, 1650) FASTER IS BETTER~! :)

despite what everyone said about burning video @4x, etc. etc. in the past, i have disregarded that "suggestion" for almost 2 years now, whether i'm the "rebel" or not, i've been burning @8x with quality results for a long time now...

and with the introduction of these newer 16x rated media not too long ago, i have "upped" the burn speed yet again~ :) i think most of us experienced burners toss out the "general 4x rule of thumb" just to get people going again as SOMETIMES burning too fast does account for the issues people are having, but then media quality, burner quality, and a host of MANY other factors go into the equation as well~ :)

if you feel you are ready to play with the "big boys", then welcome aboard~ :P using a quality drive with quality media, burning @4x is not only NOT a neccessity anymore, but will often times give you POORER scores on these newer/faster rated media~ :)

@catfreak

as hard as i searched and searched, i could NOT find a Philips DVDR1648P burner available here in the States, i know the chipset is identical to that of the Benq 1640...but being as scarce as the 1640 is to find these days, i couldn't find any online retailer that carried an ACTUAL Philips DVDR1648P :)

if anyone out there is more proficient at google than i am, which is probably a LOT of people LOL, i'd like to know too if someone finds a LINK that is "in stock" and ready to ship an actual Philips DVDR1648P burner, not a rebadged counterpart...

Yeah I think I'm done with CD/DVD Speed anyway. DVDInfoPro seems to be a more stable, reliable scanner. I think I'll stick with it from now on. The scans only take 10 to 15 minutes now with the BenQ Firmware. For some reason the Sony DRU-810A's scanning is slow as Christmas with the Sony firmware. The BenQ Firmware is great. It does a lot more than I realized. It enables PI/PO scanning, auto booktyping with QSuite, overspeed (burning at 12x or 16x on 8x media), WPOC (maybe Doc can explain that one a little), and the read speed for quality scans seems to have picked up three fold. It was definitely worthwhile, it makes me an even bigger fan of BenQ drives. Cheers!

All this talk of how the Philips chipset works so nicely with DVD+Rs has caused me to break down and buy a Benq 1655... I hope I'm every bit as pleased with it as docTY has been. I've got nearly 100 TY and 100 of those Verb DVD+Rs from Newegg that mort let us know about, so I thought it would be nice to have a drive that works well with them. For those that are interested in this drive in the States or Canada, Newegg.com has them OEM right now for $50 shipped: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101006

This is the absolute lowest price I've seen the Benq 1655 for, anywhere.

Cheers!
