Certainly meant no offense. I was lucky getting TY as TDKs. I haven't bought anything but Verbs since coming to AD mainly on your advice since TYs are not sold locally. You ARE the "guru of media".

no offense taken, my very poor attempts at humor are the cause of my OWN demise LOL :P u are a good man, thanks for the compliment...

most of the time people don't get my "stupid attempts for a chuckle" when i talk about MID coding and stuff, i guess it just sounds funny in my head, but when typed out, people are like, "uh what? docTY found a MID coding of TT-SUCKSa$$-03 on TDK's?? i hope i don't run into these, where are they manufactured?" LOL

congrats on getting the TYs under the TDK brand, i mean that with all sincerity, you got lucky with those as did the people who have gotten TYG02 in their DVD-R format~ :)

my "beef" with TDK and media recommendations have always rested SOLEY on the "TTG01/TTG02/TTH01/TTH02/TDK001/TDK002/TDK003" MIDs that i mentioned earlier and my OWN personal hatred for them, i've read a FEW posts by members that simply LOVE TDK's own media...with that said, everyone is entitled to their OWN opinions on said media, if it works well for them, all the power to them~ i've also read accounts of where the dreaded TDK's own media has KILLED a drive, if memory serves me correctly, i believe it was arniebear that this happened to...

i'm glad that you are having such good success with the Verbs and have taken my advice into consideration since you've been here at AD, that means a lot to me and i thank you for your support and confidence in me~ have a good one buddy, no harm- no foul~ :)

alkohol,

I agree on the target size for 1st class media. I never set the target size to less than 4350 with any of the media I use. Some recommend 4300 due to people using a variety of media just to cover all bases.

As you know my media of choice is verbatim dvd+r hub printables and I use dvd-rb pro/cce sp for 99% of my backups. The default target size for dvd-rb/cce is 4428 mb - 4434 mb and I never have any playback problems either.

BTW I'm glad to see that you are liking rb/cce so well and recommending it to others. I thought you might be hard to convince but I can see that you have seen the light. I too don't mind sacrificing a little more time to achieve the best quality possible less using DL media. As we know, if you don't have the time you can always batch process while asleep or at work.

I like to leave a little space around the edge of my discs since most are handed out in slim jewel cases ... that way a fingernail popping the disc out won't cause any problems near the edge of the disc ... as far as using 4321 as a target ... well, I've got this 'thing' about numbers like that, drives my wife bonkers

Hey guys I agree with you on the burning size with quality media. I only recommended the reducing of the target size because he said he was getting bad spikes at the end of the burn. I've actually tested overburns to 4600 on some Prodisc I had laying around and got a 93 score. I don't recommend the overburning, but it's fun to play with and a good use for bad media you have laying around.

I have tested DvdRebuilder and did one in 118 minutes and the other in 123 minutes. I still haven't been able to view either backup yet though. I want to watch one on the big screen to see if there is a noticeable difference. I'm probably going to shoot jdobbs(?) $30 today anyways because of the recommendations of the products. Figure I'll use it more often eventually.

***Edit sorry Doc, I forgot what thread I was in. Didn't mean to post a Prosdisc scan in a TY thread. I hope it's not contaminated now. I'll move this discussion elsewhere. ***

beltline,

from my experiences with prodisc's they burn fairly descent initially but give em 6 months to a year and then do a scan. Most of mine wouldn't play back without issues and were unripable. Same mid code R03's.

Well I guess I was for overburning tests. Hard to find a good use for a lot of this second grade media I have laying around.

no worries, it's rare i see decent scans of Prodisc media, so your scan is very much welcomed by me~ :) i have had very similar "success" or lack thereof on MY prodisc much like mort81, they burned quite nicely in the beginning...but, not much was left about a year later that was recoverable~ :) i hope your Prodiscs last longer than mine did...as much as i know how much you hate RitekG05s and have had really bad luck with them(at least now when u scan them), my own Ridata RitekG05s (non-printable) i find are MUCH better than my Prodiscs, in terms of how long they've held up quality wise~ :) we all have our fair share of horror stories with x,y,z brand of media, for some people, it's completely opposite, but for me in terms of prodisc (used about 200 of them in the past), they've already outlived their usefulness long ago....

@Doc, yeah the only reason I have those Prodisc are because I bought some over a year ago before I knew about the higher quality media. Of course than I read about the Ritek Ridata being so good and bought a bunch of printables and a 50 pack of non printables. All coded out as G05's, all have went bad. Checked the media code on the Prodisc and saw they coded out as MCC. So tried to buy 200 more. That's when I got the R03's. Now they just sit on a shelf waiting for me to get the urge to test or transfer data from one computer to the next. I will say those MCC coded prodisc are still scoring a 98 at around the 18 month mark. I have some set aside that I am planning to scan every 6 months of different media. I save the scans, keep a label inside the dvd cover to keep track of the scans, and quit when they go below 50. The G05's are the only one's to do that so far. Others have fared well with them, but I'm going to stick primarily with TY's and Verb's as they go on sale.

beltline- while it's always good to have another source for Taiyo Yuden media ! And newegg .com is a excellent company to deal with ! great deals , great service , ! I think you could probably find taiyo yuden media cheaper elsewhere ! either as Fuji or Sony made in japan media . Or as Taiyo Yuden's own media . Through one or more of the online reatilers = Supermediastore.com, Rima.com, or meritline.com . But Taiyo Yudens are Taiyo Yudens wherever you get them ! That being said beltline my friend it makes sense to get the best deal right ? Thank you for the informmation though ! It's good to know . Good Luck , Happy Burning & happy motoring !!! toot toot!!!!

@ tom1991 You need to really blast those 16x MCC004 Verbs. With both my BenQ1640 and my Plextor712, I set the record speed at 'max' and burn 'em out to 4321 ... [I'm getting scans from 98 - 99 and the occasional 100] I have never seen a scan of 100, would you post it just so I can see one.

What is DVD RB Pro? Is it a faster encoder? I have CCE, but it's worthless, because with my Celeron 2.4 GHZ processor, nothing encodes quickly. I could lower it from the default 4 passes. I use it with Avi2DVD and TFM. They both take forever, like 12 hours to convert a 700MB file! NeroVision works well, but it can't handle non-permanent subs. If there's a faster way to encode video files to DVD with CCE and incorporate subs, please lemme know. I am a big fan of anime, and the only way I can tolerate the voices is to watch it in Jap with Eng subs. Please fill me in. Thanks.

Well, I'd say take a trip to Newegg.com, and come over to the "Dark Side" with docTY, myself, catfreak, and many others and get yourself one of those very inexpensive, high quality Lite-On 1693S's, then you'll be able to track those errors, or lack thereof. :)

Tokijin,

Dvd-rebuilder is an app that uses your choice of several different encoders to produce the best quality backups of video files on anything requiring compression hands down. It is available in a free beta installer vs that comes with several free encoders bundled in. You can also use cce for even better and faster encodes. The pro vs has a lot more features, bells, and whisles. I use it with cce almost exclusively and compress folders that are 7+ gb all the time down to fit on a dvd5. I have a 52" hdtv and can see little if any video quality loss.

It is not fast but cce is the fastest of the encoders. On average it takes me about about 2 1/2 hours on my set up. You can set it up to batch process and encode several folders while you sleep or are at work. There is a link to the free installer vs in my sig. Here is some more good reading about it and why it is dominant over transcoding apps for video quality http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=55302 I'm encoding a 7.08 gb folder right now.

BIGTOXY69 - I was actually replying to catfreak's post. He posted it and I believe was just stating that he hadn't seen printables TY from Newegg. Personally I only buy printables and had already purchased 100 from meritline earlier today. It would be nice to see newegg become competitive with TY printables, but as of now I only purchase media from meritline, supermediastore, and rima. So in short I agree with what you said ;)

Can you use DVD-RB to convert movie files to DVD, or is just for compressing DVD-9 to DVD-5? It sounds like the latter, just checking. My next drive will probably be the BenQ DW 1650, but we'll see. I don't really need another burner, but if I do get one, I think it'll be a BenQ. Thanks for the info. Cheers!
