For some reason they seem to put heavier protection on the Region 2 copies. I remember people found it quite easy to copy R1 of Curse of the Golden Flower, but it needed an update of DVDFab to crack the R2 version.

Often it's the user interface. ;) You know... the one using the controls.

From my discussions with Creaky, many of the new releases in region 2 have lighter protection than other regions. Of course region 2 still gets a share of the difficult copy protections. Seems Spidey 3 has a bunch of structural protections not seen on the region 1 release.

I recently did Spidey 3, r1, a variety of ways. It only had the old CSS encryption and region code, so any decrytion program should process the files. Shrink processed it without the need for any extra decryption software. I don't know what happened, but I doubt your problem had to do with copy protection on the DVD, unless the studios released more than one version. Post the copy protection info and we'll know more about what you encountered.

For Spiderman 3 the 3.2.1.0 version of DVDFab worked for a full disc copy (at least for me) but failed on Ratatouille; however the backup that resulted from 4.0.0.8 Beta works great in BOTH my DVD players.

DVDFab 4.0.0.8 -> DVDShrink to ISO (disable preview) -> ImgBurn

My experience with that Rat bastard:

No luck at all with AnyDVD, RipIt4Me, or DVD Decrypter

Rip with DVDFab HD Decrypter 4.0.0.5 Beta:
Full Disc - Hangs up at VTS_06.1.VOB, cannot continue
Main Movie - Works fine

Burn with DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15:
No problems.

It plays fine (DVD deck) until about 43:51, near the end of chapter 13, when it starts to stop & go, and finally freezes at 44:08. I see some digital artifacting in various areas of the picture.

If I skip ahead to chapter 14 it freezes up for a minute or two, then starts playing, but at various points of the chapter, but will continue on without a problem.

If I skip ahead to chapter 15 it plays on without a problem.

I've tried different discs, different brands, different formats (-R/-RW), but get the same problem.

What's going on? Any advice?

sounds like maybe a flaw in the disc? try another copy? only other thing i can think is to make sure you disabled that path finder or whatever it's called...

Hi all, just got my copy of Ratatouille from BestBuy last night, ripped to hdd with ripit4me (R1), then used shrink and imgburn. No probs, my computer has Xp pro svc pack 2. Any of you with the horible probs using Vista? If so, maybe this is where the problems lie.

Did you rip movie only or full DVD and what version of RipIt4Me are you using?

I haven't thrown the old sig pic away. When I get bored looking at the same one I'll change it or get a new one. I like this one because it follows the PacMan game theme.

As for the RI4M, a lot of people shut it down or use it incorrectly. Like you I was able to do Ratatouille with RI4M 1710. My PC isn't an OCed C2D, but it's fairly fast. With that intro... RI4M took about 35 minutes to rip and process the files in Full DVD. A disc error did occur in playback on a standalone. The DVD errored out on the trailers. Hitting play started the movie. I can access the menu, so only the trailers were missed. I'm thinking I may have needed to do this one in movie and menus. But with the copy playable, there's no need to waste the extra time and media.

Here's a real puzzle for inquisitive minds:

I finally burned two copies of Rat (see above), but each one would freeze up at a certain point in my standalone DVD player. However, when I played them in my roommates DVD player, one played perfectly, but the other one wasn't even recognized by the player.

WTF?

PacMan777 bro, my computer is not OCed, however it is C2D(Intel) at 2.4MHz. Also after decrypting I always use vob blanker 2.0.0.2 and blank out the usual nonsense and small files with nothing appearing in the preview. I also blank out large files with nothing appearing in the preview.I always wondered if these files contain a subroutine that screws up the transcoding and or rebuilding process and burning processes(ie program software we are using). Perhaps this is why my backups play without a hitch. I go over all the files shown on vob blanker.
BTW Pacman(the death star ) ROCKS!

Dito, no problems with RipIt4Me and shrink.

I ripped Ratatouille using the newest version of DVDFab. I open it up in DVD Shrink and it works fine. Then, when backing up it up into an ISO, it eventually stops and says "Out of Memory!" and "Not Enough Space". This is the only movie that is giving me problems like this, all the other ones I've done today have worked fine.

Any suggestions?

I did use VOB Blanker. And all the other bad cell/sector fixer programs. It's still giving me the same message...it analyzes it fine, then it gets to a certain percentage and stops.

SUCCESS!!!

After 4 tries on my own (3 of them using the latest DVDFab HD Decrytpor 4.0.0.8 Beta), I decided it was time for.... "AFTERDAWN!!" I cherry picked various tips, and on my 5th try, I found success. I do not know if a single (or combination)of these tips worked, but here's what I did...

I have Region 1 disc.

Switched drives. First 4 tries, I used my generic DVD-ROM drive by Liteon. I changed and used my DVD-RW drive by Sony.

DVDFab HD Decrytpor 4.0.0.8 Beta: disabled PathFinder, used "Main Movie" function.

DVD Shrink 3.2: Re-authored choosing 5.1-ch English, only. It compressed at 82.4%

Burn with Nero 7 (version?): Then I tested the movie and did not find any freezes or problems, especially between 42 and 45 minutes (where that one protection exists).

Now my kids can manhandle the copy all they want, and my original is safe.

I have yet to contribute to.... "AFTERDAWN!!" And I hope this information will help someone, as others have helped me in the past.

Hi, but just how exactly did you use vob blanker and which files did you blank out?

I just did "Full Disc" option on VOB Blanker. Or whatever that option is called...I ripped the entire disc but I'm trying to re-author it just to include the movie with Shrink.

It opens FINE with Shrink, everything is there and viewable, just it gives me the "Out of Memory" and "Not Enough Space" message.

I've gotten that error from needing to reboot my system, and not getting all the copy protection out of the video.

I've been toying around with Ratatouille and found a couple of ways of doing a backup. I got a Full DVD backup with RipIt4Me. There's one flaw to the disc, but pushing play starts the movie. The movie plays perfect plus the extras are accessible from that point. Ripping the DVD with AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter (CSS Off) and process with FixVTS allows the files to open in Shrink. That indicates they're compliant and leaves more of the original files than other methods I've tried. The AnyDVD ripper rips to the HD and opens in Shrink. I'm in the process of doing the files with AnyDVD + DVDD + FixVTS with RB/CCE SP. It'll be a couple of hours before I can report back on that one.

That's interesting. AnyDVD alone with DVD Shrink wouldn't open the DVD for quick analysis. The ripper deletes about 100MB of material, so I'm not sure how those files will process. I've already burned 3 extra DVDs checking this one out.

For a method I've fully tried (besides the RipIt4Me I mentioned before), DVD Decrypter (CSS off) + AnyDVD, processed with FixVTS (Full DVD), encoded with RB/CCE SP, and burned with Express made a flawless Full DVD backup to DVD5. Shrink using Quality Settings and a supported burner should work ok. I didn't get the initial disc error I got when opening the DVD made from RI4M ripped and processed files. As usual, RB did an excellent job with compression, so no compression induced errors. I suspect using movie and menu mode in RI4M with the selection to jump to menu might give a good working DVD. Just about any software that allows a movie only rip should give good playback.

So far the AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter rip gives the most complete files and FixVTS in Full DVD is the easiest way to process them. Done properly, the processed files should work in any recording software. Compression becomes an issue when doing Full DVD. That can account for skipping in playback.

Though the RI4M ripped files provided a good playback, I wasn't happy that it gave a disc error during the opening. That's why I fell back on the old method of using AnyDVD with DVD Decrypter. I'm glad I did because it gave me the results I was looking for. It's interesting that the copy protection blocked the newly updated programs, but allowed some of the older methods to get the job done.
