Hey guys, I've finally got my GOW to work !! This is what I did:
I have a Matrix Infinity Modchip installed in my Playstation 2. The modchip version was currently V1.2.
I copied the original GOW by using the DVD Copy option in Nero. I used a Philips Dual Layer DVD Writer and used the blank Verbatim DL 8.5Gb DVDS to burn the copy onto
In order for the Dual Layer DVD to be recognised by your Playstation 2, you need to upgrade your modchip firmware.
I upgraded my Infinity Chip firmware to V1.5 from the link below:
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl
Once it has been upgraded by following the instructions you get with the firware download, you need to Press TRIANGLE + CIRCLE to enter the configuration menu.
There you will see a option for DL Support and it will be OFF. Turn it ON and away you go!!
Before I upgraded, my copy kept on hanging at the 'Loading' Stage and at a stage where I was trying to save. Now it loads up all the way, as I've completed the game, I know it goes all the way through. I hope this helps you guys out there :-)

Okay, I'm a bit of a total n00b here, and still learning. I aquired God of War last night, but the file setup is strange. Its about 7.5 gigs, split into 4 files. The files are .gi format, and are like, godow (11).gi, godow (12).gi, (13), and (14) and there is a really small godow.gi file.
So, here comes the huge brick that's falling rapidly towards my head... do I have to have a dual layer DVD burner to burn this and play it? I keep seeing threads talking about dummy files on GoW, but I seriously doubt I'll delete enough to reach a standard DVD size.
So I'm sure I'm answering my own question and all... I'm just wondering if there's any hope for a guy with a standard DVD 8x burner. Or if this is a strictly dual-layer burner job. Gotta be optimistic, y'know..!
-Thanks in advance. :)

You can do this without a dual-layer DVD burner. Try this tutorial:
Going on memory, I redid SONIX's tutorial and made it easier to understand. Hopefully this will help those in distress as his original tutorial wasn't very clear. Good luck!!
*except the bonus movies*
*NOTE*
This fix does not work for use on a HDD only
for DVD-R backup
All credits go to SONIX.
His website is:
http://www.backuptools.co.uk/
Apache 2 and other tools can be found at the above address
For those of you with swap magic disks 3.0 and lower.
You have to use dvd loader to boot.
You will need:
1)DVD Decryptor
Get it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_... and click on the download link at the bottom.
2)CD DVD Gen 1.5
Get it here: http://home.versatel.nl/joeriroels/Download/download.html and download the file called "# $ONY CDVDGEN 1.5". You will be redirected to this
website in 15 seconds.
3)Apache 2
Go to: http://www.backuptools.co.uk/ , click the download link in the left panel, then type "apache 2" in the search engine on the next page. Download "Apache 2".
4)God of War Tool
Go to: http://www.backuptools.co.uk/ , click the download link in the left panel, then type "god of war" in the search engine on the
next page. Download "God of War Tool".
-Create a folder for the God of War ISO you are going to rip and call it "Original ISO".
-Create a folder called "God of War" this is where you will put your extracted files etc.
-Open your "God of War" folder and create four folders within it. Call them: GOW, Apache 2, CD DVD Gen 1.5, and God of War Tool.
Place and extract Apache 2, CD DVD Gen 1.5, and God of War Tool in their folders. You will have to install CD DVD Gen 1.5 after extracting it and create a CD DVD Gen desktop icon.
First open DVD Decrypter and decrypt the .iso to your "Original ISO" folder. Insert the original God of War DVD into your DVD Burner, load up DVD Decryptor, go to Mode > ISO > and pick Read. Click on the brown folder under "Destination" in DVD Decryptor and save it to your "Original ISO" folder.
A complete .iso of 7.97 or 7.93 gb is what you need to
extract both layers.
You have to use apache 2 to extract both layers.
The files must be placed together and fully
extracted (not in .iso form).
(Iso-buster will not work as it wont extract the
second layer.
Extract both layers of the DVD9 into the same directory.
To do this start Apache 2, go to File > Load File, and load the God of War ISO from your "Original ISO" folder. You can change which layer you want to extract by right-clicking the ISO in the left column (of Apache 2) and selecting "switch layers".
Highlight the ISO in the left column, right-click it then pick extract. Extract these files to your "GOW" folder. After it's done extracting, right-click the ISO in the left column again, pick switch layers and extract it again into the "GOW" folder.
You should have 16 files totaling 7.97 (or 7.93) GB in your "GOW" folder.
Run the "God of War Tool" click browse, select the GODOFWAR.TOC file from your "GOW" folder and click extract button.
Extraction will take about 15 minutes.
This will create a NEW folder called "Extracted" which will contain all of your extracted files created using "God of War Tool".
I think this folder will be created in your "God of War" folder or your "GOW" folder.
Run a search on your PC. Do this by clicking "Start" on your control panel then "Search". Search "all files and folders" for "Command Prompt". When a command prompt shows in the search result column, copy and paste it into your "Extracted" folder.
To make a working DVD5 backup, you will need to delete all files with the extension *.PSW and delete all the BONUS*.PSS files too. That should leave you with a folder size of about 3.47 GB (3.5 GB).
The easiest way to do this is by using a command prompt. Open up your "Extracted" folder, start the "Command Prompt" then minimize it.
In your "Extracted" folder, right-click a blank area (not a file), go to "Properties", and copy the entire link next to "Location" begining with "C:\". Maximize command prompt, type "cd", press spacebar, and paste the link. Press "\" and type "Extracted\". Then press enter.
Your new directory should look something like this: "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\God of War\\GOW\Extracted\".
- Type "dir *.PSW". This will list all .PSW files in your Extracted folder. Find and delete those files in your Extracted folder then retype "dir *.PSW" again to make sure you've deleted them all.
- Type "dir *.PSS". This will list all .PSS files in your Extracted folder. Find and only delete all "BONUS.PSS" files in your Extracted folder.
Run the "God of War Tool" again, select the GODOFWAR.TOC from your "GOW" folder and click the "Rebuild" button.
This may take about 10 minutes.
After a while the Relink Screen will popup, first, click the 'Auto-Relink Dupes' button at the bottom and that will take care of most of the relinking.. the rest of relinking needs to be done manually.
You will need to relink all the *.PSW files to their *.PSS counterparts.
Here's an example:
In the left column find the file A01P01.PSW and left click it to highlight it, then in the right column find the file A01P01.PSS and left click it as well. Only these two files should be highlighted. Click the "Relink" button at the bottom. Only the .PSW file in the left column will dissappear.
Do not touch the BONUS.PSS files yet. Link all of the .PSW files in the left column with their .PSS counterpart in the right column.
Do not link two files together in the same column.
Relink all the missing BONUS*.PSS (in the left column) with any .PSS files in the right column.
You will get a message telling you that all files have been linked when you're done. You can close "God of War Tool" now.
You will now have 2 new files in the "GOW" folder called:
GODOFWAR.TOC_NEW and PART1.PAK_NEW
Delete the original PART1.PAK, PART2.PAK and GODOFWAR.TOC files in your "GOW" folder.
And rename GODOFWAR.TOC_NEW to GODOFWAR.TOC then rename PART1.PAK_NEW to PART1.PAK.
Delete the 'Extracted' folder. You no longer have any need of it or the files in it. Create a folder on your desktop called "GOW_IML".
1) Open up CD DVD Gen. The icon should be on your desktop.
2) Select "Create New Project" and then select "DVD-ROM Master Disc". Drag CD DVD Gen to the left of your screen.
3) Open your "GOW" folder and move it to the right side of your screen.
4) Select all the files in your "GOW" folder and drag them into the right side of CD DVD Gen. Drag them into the section that
says "File Name, Size, Last Modified, and Sector Size".
5) Look for a "SLUS, SLES, or SCUS" file under "File Name" in CD DVD Gen and write down the full name. Click on the "Volume" tab in the upper left corner of CD DVD Gen.
6) Type "SLUS, SLES, or SCUS" whichever your file name is into the first box near "Disc Name".
7) Type all of the numbers from your "SLUS, SLES, or SCUS" file name into the second box without the period.
8) Type "PLAYSTATION" for the producer name and select the appropriate license area (United States, Canada, etc).
9) Click on "Record" or "REC".
10) Save it to your "GOW_IML" folder on your desktop. IMPORTANT >> YOU WILL GET TWO ERROR MESSAGES. Just click "OK" for both.
IMPORTANT:
If you get one error message, then you have to download ?WNASPI32.DLL? and put it in your windows system 32 folder. It's quick and easy. File size is only 160 KB. Get it here: http://www.Nero.com/us/WNASPI32.DLL.html
11) The recording screen will pop up, click on File then Export Image and save it to your desktop not in a folder. Name it gow.LST.
12) When it's done you will have four files on your desktop called: gow.000, gow.001, gow.002, and gow.003. You don't need these, just delete them after you're done with everything.
13) Open "Apache 2". Go to "File" then "Import IML File", find your "GOW_IML" folder on your desktop and pick the gow.IML file.
14) In Apache 2 go to "File" and pick "Build ISO". Name the file "God of War" and save it to your desktop.
15) When it's done, insert a blank DVD-R into your DVD Burner, load up DVD Decryptor, go to Mode > ISO > then pick Write. Go to "File" then "Browse" and load the "God of War" ISO from your desktop. To start burning, click on the pic of a hard drive pointing to a DVD in DVD Decryptor.
I take no credit in this as it should all go to
SONIX.
Keep up the good work.

So, here's my story:
I installed GOW to the HD using HDAdvance straight off the retail disc. Everything works fine (except for one bonus video so far: locks up the game), that is, until I get to Pandora's Bridge. About 3 seconds after loading up the stage, the game locks up. I was able to quickly roll into the save point, save, and attempt to load up from there. 3 seconds later, it freezes.
Is it possible to fix it with a patch or do I need to resort to another method?

I have the same problem at pandora's temple that somebody mentioned earlier. Does this have anything to do with the fact that I have duo2se instead of dms4? Will GoW work fully with both, if the game is burned correctly?
If so, what should I do to correct the hang?

Hi,
Can someone please tell me what would be the best read speed in Decrypter to create the ISO file for GOW and for that matter any PS2 game?
Cheers.

Have always used max read speed, as it does not seem to make any difference. Speed is only a factor when writing and this needs to be a slow as possible, although many people report writing at 8 x or 16 x with no problems.
I backed up GOW using full read speed and my copy plays perfectly. The only way I can see there bing any issues on reading is if you had a dodgy drive, but don't quote me on that!

Ok, I have ripped the game with decrypter and now have a ISO file (7.46 GB (8,018,624,512 bytes))on my hard drvie. I've read that you should set the book type to dvd-Rom, is that true? I'm going to be using a verbatim DVD+R DL, LG 4163B burner and decrypter to write the file. Is there anything else I should know before starting?
Thanks,

Guys, I've used Sonix method to try and back up my GOW (PAL Version). I keep getting stuck at when it comes times to use IML-2-DVD, when it gets to 100% it does not stop. Any ideas why it does not stop, help please!!
Also, Sonix's IML file is for the NTSC SCUS_973.99.
Does anyone have and IML files that works on the PAL SCES_531.33??

You make the IML from your PAL original disk in CDVDGEN, you dont call it the same name as the US version, just copy the name that is on the original disksuch as you quoted. Also cant remember if my app stopped or not, but eiether way the process completed and the image was created okay. Look in the output folder and see if the output was completed even if the software did not stop afterwards.

Guys, I have just discovered that the ISO that Decrypter creates is neither 7.97 or 7.93 nor 7.46 GB as mentioned in this forum.
It this a problem?
What can I do to ensure that DVD Decrypter is working correctly??
I have also tried making ISO's for GOW using Nero and Alcohol none of the sizes match the above.
Any ideas???

Mine did not match what was listed either. I just ignored it and carried on, all was okay. If you just use the guide at the very beginning and follow all the steps allowing for the odd change such as file size and name of image, you won't go wrong. Run Apache 2 on the output from Decrypter and save all the files together in extracted form not ISO. You may have to adjust the tools tab from layer 1 to 2 to get all the files including the pak2 file. Then just run the GOW tool on this folder and select the toc file and wait. I then used DOS command line to delete the required files del *.psw and del bonus??.pss and that will clear all the files (obvioulsy you will need to be in the correct directory. i.e. start / run> cmd <cr> then at command do a CD (Change Directory)through the files to where the folder is with the extracted files. Spend quite some time afterwards doing all the relinking, this after running the auto relink function in the tool. I think that most files had the corresponding files to relink to available, just click on the one in the left window and the correct one in the right window and go through them all. Then just get rid of the original toc and pak files and rename the newly created ones. The CDVDGEN part is where you'll need to use the same name as that on your original disc not what was mentioned in other posts. After this, there are only a couple more bits to go and your there. Lastly good luck with it, I am now at Poseidons Challenge (Great Game!)

Thanks again. Have you ever got Sonix method write to backup including the bonus material?
It seemed to work after I used cdvdgen to create the IML file as you suggested, but the quality of the videos suck compared to the original. I am going to try it again and select PAL instead of NTSC in TmpegEnc.
