I have a modchip and a hard drive. All my games are on the hard drive. I'm not going to be trying any Dual-Layer Media any time soon.
Why don't you try it and tell us if it works?

Hey people,
I've been burning PS2 games for a while now using a different method and I can play anygame under 4.2GB. Anygame larger than that would not work for me for some reason. Now I read this tutorial and tried to use the IML2ISO method but it didnt not decrease the size of the game significantly like it did on here. Im trying to get RE4 and Tekken5 to work but I have no luck can someone help me please?

MSkiLLz: best tool is Gnie. can't remember full name. does all the shrinking, iml 2 iso re-building and everything. LINK FOR INSTRUCTIONS AND DOWNLOAD:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/269550
if ur game has dummy files, you patch 'em in the middle of the job.
Gnie is the only needed tool! If the game is less than 4.2GB, it works most of the time, larger games shrink just fine.
I suggest using Gnie for your larger ones, and your current method for the smaller ones.
p.s. what tools do you use for the smaller ones???

Does this tutorial work for HDLoader?
Making it DVD5 then transferring it to the HD?

it should work for hd loader. hd loader authenticates the same way as cd swap discs or modchips. latest version of that program would be best, you know, a version that was released most recently.
example: cd swap disc.
1. you bought the cd swap disc 2 years ago
2. the game is brand new
3. find the latest version and burn it
4. load your old swap disc on your ps2
5. load your new swap* disc
6. load your game
*or hd loader. need a swap disc to load new hd loader cd-r

I tried using the Gnie method but it didn't reduce the game by much at all. The original iso was 4.25g and after I used Gnie it was 4.23. I don't think there are too many dummy files in this game but it still doesn't work for me.

if the iso size is 4.25 GB, then you don't need to shrink it.
how to check for dummy files:
when you use iso buster to see the files, it is a file that _usually_ is called "dummy." with no extension, just a dot.
you re-name the extension to be .txt
you open it, and delete EVERYTHING
you type a space, so the file has 1 byte of data, save it,
and rename the extension back to be just a dot (.)
then you use whatever method to create a new iso from that.
however, keep in mind, these newer games are being stubborn. obstacles:
1. hard to find updated hdloaders/cd swappers
2. no one but you and me using this thread anymore
(i learned everything i know here, and it's the only thread i've ever subscribed to)
i won't be able to check the thread anymore today.. but i'll check back tomorrow.

I think that both these games I have just aren't working isos. The RE4 is SLES not SLUS which means its European right? That wouldn't work on my system anyway and the Tekken 5 is just not working. I just got NFS Carbon working so I'm just gonna have to look for a working RE4.

with any game, you need to verify that the original works first.
get swap disc or a mod-chip, so you can play european games.

I use a ps2 expliot which involves swapping discs. Shouldn't that be the same as swap magic?

You can try using the PAL 2 NTSC patcher to play PAL games on an NTSC console. If you seem to have problems with games bigger than 4.2GB, I suggest you buy a game with a bigger TOC (http://www.ps3news.com/forums/ps2-1-1-swap-chat/official-ps2-dvd-toc-list-60.html). You should be able to pick up a used copy of a game like GTA:VC (4.35GB) for less than $10 now--it should alleviate some of your problems.

orthogonl: can you share a bit of knowledge about this larger TOC (table of contents) subject?
i've noticed that swap-discs have it... sometimes they ask for an even bigger TOC disc... i _know_ what it means, but how does it effect boot authentication??
-thanks

UPDATED: 1/14/2007 (Tools are ready to download on 1st page & page 5)
OK for those keep PM me or keep writing at my little SHOUTBOX that they needed the tools & links to rip and backup GT4, now it's all available. With that in mind, I highly recommend you guys (whoever still needed the tools), get them asap before it's too late. Hopefully it'll be there a while.
Damn... I had too much fun playing GRAN TURISMO HD, too much fun ripping and backing up DVDs, been enjoying my new 60GB PS3 (Blu-ray movies). It sure has been long (close to a year) since I come around here. Well, them tools are ready for whoever that were looking for.
Best of luck to all and enjoy all of your backups to the fullest.

I use GTA:SA which is 4.2gb. If I had a game with 4.5 to 5Gb that would make my ife easier. I haven't heard of any like that though.

I have a Dual Layer burner with the most current firmware, and it only read the game as 3.9GB's. So I don't think it's a DVD-9 game. Did you download your version, or are you backing up an original? I just ripped mine with DVD Decrypter and burned it to TYG02 (8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's) at 4x and it plays perfectly. Of course I have a modchip.
My rental copy is DVD9.Size:7,32GB. The game comes in 2 versions.Unfortunately I still cannot copy it to DVD9 by using DVD-Decrypter.Maybe it's the media(TDK DL+R) because I get the usual black screen after leaving the first options screen.

The GT4 RipKit should worked, I've done them twice and it has proven to work 100% successfully. I've just uploaded 3 days ago and it should still be there on page 5 (the GRAN TURISMO 4 GUIDE), tolls are available here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/5/275350 -- get it while it last.
Best of luck!!

Your problem most likely lies in the order that you click when using Genie. It has to be Extract LBA, then extract files, then restore files and then restore the LBA.
