Thank you. The small black wire was the wifi antenna, I thought. There's only 2 ribbon strips, one very small one that connects a small circuit board to the mobo, and a longer one that connects the BRD player to the mobo. Do they need to be cleaned with iso alcohol (I also have arctic silver greaese remover and purifier if that would work also, the purifier) I didn't think about the oils on my skin interferring with the connection.
So there's no type of set-up like a PC has when the memory battery is removed?
Thanks! k2ksier

Is there any instructions on how to apply it before heating? You must just sprinkle it on the backside I'm guessing. I had to do it twice, first time it locked up trying to play, second time it seems to be working good, but since the MoBo battery has been removed do I have to reset the BIOS somehow? Any other tips to get it back up and running after a complete disassembly? Controllers not linking properly either.
Thanks k2skier

So far its working like a dream been using it every night playing Metal Gear Solid 4 and Assassin's Creed for about 4 hours to 8 hours. So far so good. Id like to know if anyone else has had a long success rate with flux after the 3rd or 4th heatgun fix?
no need to reset the bios!!!!!!
as for the controllers not connecting that will be the wirless ribbon or black wire not connected properly!!!!

Thanks! I took it apart again, and cleaned both ribbons with arctic silver purifier (3 drops on each end and wiped with a lint free cloth) and it now works great, controllers link up fast, it found the IP address likes it's supossed to. I prbably could have used iso alcohol but I only had 70%...

dchris01,
How are you doing the reflow with Flux?? are you doing 50seconds both sides of the bga's only fluxin the memory chips on both sides and the silver side bga. Are you using lead free (ROHS) flux, I hgave only had to do mine once with flux and so far its working find... i hope it will not die again (50 secs both sides)... otherwise looks like Ill be learning from Colin's next video.

so i got some flux and reflowed the ps3. it has been working for a couple of days. but today i just noticed the the power supply is verry hot. like almost too hot to touch. so i'm asking everyone else here if their power supply is the same after an hour of gaming. it seems as though the motherboard was the problem though. maybe the psu is the direct cause? thoughts...........???

ya figured it would be very odd to have psu sooo hot.i have yet to open it up to see what is going on and if there is any visible malfunction. any links to cheap replacement? is it fixable? i'm not bad with electoronics soldering/ replacing parts wise. is there a common part that goes wrong?

This is the best site I have found for the YLOD I have reflowed 4 units that are all still working longest is 4 months. The one I am working on now is unusual when you turn it on it goes green then yellow then green and flashing red. Has anyone else seen this pattern? I am planning to reflow but was just wondering if this pattern could tell me where I should target my efforts.

Hi guys, I have a 40gb ps3 with the YLOD. A few nights ago I was playing demon's souls and it suddenly froze and the red light flashed 3 times and it shut its self off, so I booted Demon's souls back up and after the same time period it did the same thing, and it did it again even when just leaving the ps3 at the XMB screen.
Anyway I decided to take it apart to clean the dust out and stuff, I've had this ps3 since the start of 2008, Sony replaced it with my original because it stopped reading discs, so I assume this is a refurb. I only got as far as taking the fan out of the heat sink enclosure then I started to reassemble it again.
(As I was taking it apart I got my brother to hold the Blu-ray drive as I disconnected the power out of the side of it and he pulled it a little and the ribbon cable came out without undoing the clamp that holds it in, i've been thinking it could of damaged the cable but after examining it it looks fine.)
So I assembled it again tracing my steps back through the disassembly guide I used and booted it up, and I got the green light for a split second, then the yellow and quickly flashes red 3 times with 3 beeps.
I've taken it apart several times checking connections and cables are fine and I'm still getting the same light, does anyone have any idea what could be up?
Considering it was booting before I initially took it apart I'm hoping its something I've done that's caused the YLOD. I'm just about to clean the ribbon cables with alcohol as suggested in a post earlier and see if that works, I'll post back the results.
Thanks in advance.

Sony will request that you send back the original HDD with the system when you send it to them for what will no doubt-ably be a replacement or them sending it back to you with out them touching it because you some how voided their warranty. Is the problem that you don't have your original drive? If you do then I don't see the area for concern...why would you opt to send in your "500g(b)" drive when you could quickly just replace the smaller original? (I'm just asking)
