if we turn on Remote play the fan will be on low when the system is on standby, will it help to decrease chances of YLOD from occurring?

Hi, I am a newbie here. I have successfuly revived my own PS3 back to life from YLOD using the reflow method. It has been working fine for 2 months now. I am now trying to help a friend fix his YLOD. After the 1st reflow, I managed to resolve the YLOD, however I can't seems to play any games at all (both on disc and HDD). I can however play DVD, VCD, CD and access the HDD of any other media format. Just can't play games. I did the followings just to be sure (I know it should not be the case but I just want to eliminate all the possiblity. Sometimes strange things happen !!):

1) Clean the blue ray lens (using cotton bud with lens cleaner)
2) Reset the system with 3 beeps method.
3) Reformat the HDD (both using PS3 and PC methods)
4) Change to another working HDD.

None of the above worked. Therefore, i decided to do another reflow (thinking, I might have not done a good job during the 1st reflow). To my horror, when I fix the set back after the 2nd reflow. I got back the YLOD. Again, just to be sure that I have not messed up anything else after the second reflow, I did the followings:

1) Check the PS output.
2) Check all PS conmections (thru the PCB connections and traces)
3) Visual inspections on PCB and components to ensure no displacements and such.

I couldn't find anything wrong. I am going to do the 3rd reflow today. Assuming that I get it back to workinga again, but still cannot play the games, what do members here think my problem is ? Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers....from Singapore

Maybe try the third reflow with flux this time? Given it worked the first time, but the second hasn't, maybe the solder is too dry.

Also, with the BluRay not working but DVD / CD working, thats a funny one! I guess there is a component or a part of the ribbon that deals with BluRay and that is faulty or not connected properly given the rest works? Very strange that the drive works but BluRay doesn't. Sorry I am not much help, but I certainly don't know the workings of drives / Ps3's well at all.

Wish I could do another reflow, my heatgun is gathering dust :)

Hello to you all!!! May I begin by telling you that I have an older generation PS3...60GB model CECHA01 ??? I started having trouble when the display on my tv(composite) looked like I was playing an ATARI, and sometimes displayed "MATRIX" like shapes and colors?!?! I figured that it was overheating or something, so I decided to go online to find out why, or what I could do to save this expensive machine... especially since it starts up normally and has a solid green light??? The first thing I found was to remove and replace the old thermal paste. That is very easy to do and not too expensive to replace it with as5(I have experience in applying this). I put the system back together and it came back up again, just enough for me to "hardboot it" to change display settings, etc...just long enough to see that I was playing a matrix-like ATARI yet again??? So I looked online some more and found Gilskys video turorial on how to "reflow" a PS3!!!! At this point I figured that I must "reflow" the RSX chip...and I did it carefully!!!!! But to no avail, the system now has no video at all, and yet, it still boots up normally with a solid green light?! I've tested the harddrive and it works fine. I have also taken apart the power supply and have tested it to be working perfectly??? There is nothing wrong with the motherboard that I can see either?! Does any of you have any experience with this type of problem? ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hey Wallyhale,

How long has your ps3 lasted, and did you use flux? Mine is still going stronge since I used flux, its a little lowder than it useto be, dont know why, reapplied thermal paste etc that only thing I had done this time was clamp bend, but I dont care its still not as loud as the 360.

First of all, a big note of thanks to all of you guys who are posting on here and elsewhere giving advice on how to fix the YLOD. I had a very tentative go at it today and managed to get the PS3 running again. One problem I did have was in damaging the plastic clip for the ribbon cable for the Bluray player which meant the first time I reassembled meant this just didn't work but after another go at wedging it in properly this now seems ok.

I do still have a problem though: I seem to have no wireless functionality. Not only is the controller not connecting with the PS3 unless it is plugged in, the internet is also non-existent. It seems as though the bluetooth connection has just disappeared. I assume this is something I have done wrong in reassembly but can anyone point me to where I went wrong? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks XTrez. It turned out it wasn't the black cable but, as I could only remember seeing one black cable, you pointed me to the right componenent and from a quick look I spotted what looked like a ribbon cable connector with no ribbon cable.

Huhm? Now where is it? Took the wireless card off and lo and behold it was wedged in between the motherboard and the metal cover the wifi board etc all screw into. So, after disassembling the thing again, putting the ribbon cable through the gap and connecting it to the wi-fi board I seem to have full functionality back.

Fingers crossed the fix lasts for a reasonable time.

Here's an interesting thought I've just had. I notice in Gilksy's video he advises you to use only a very thin layer of thermal compound and comments that it can cause problems if you apply too much. However, when I was dismantling the PS3 I noticed that Sony seemed to have used quite a lot of thermal compound - so much so that it had pasted a thick layer on to the plastic board covering the GPU and CPU. Could this of itself have actually led to the YLOD on my PS3? Mine is the 40GB version so the general design is less vulnerable to the YLOD from what I've read.

XTrez - I now have a PS3 slim so I have no idea how long the Original lasted / is lasting :) I assume if I did it well it will last a long time, hopefully as long as it did out of the factory, but doubtful!

Lewismac - I did exactly the same thing! Had the ribbon cable trapped under everything when reassembling and had to pull it apart a bit to get it released again :S All good though when reassembled :)

Forgot to mention, when I dismantled mine the thermal paste that Sony had applied was MEGA dodgy! It was "patchy" and squeezed out the sides of the braces and onto the board / side of the chips. No doubt it wasn't running as cool as intended from day 1 which probably eventually led to YLOD.

After the reflow and reapplication of thermal paste it was whisper quiet .. like not even getting off the first fan setting whereas before it would get semi loud .. but nowhere near as loud as the Xbox (out of the box) ;)

hi there heres my story, i have a launch 60gb that got YLOD after 3.10 update after much searching i dicided to reflow my ps3 myself and it worked a treat but 2 days later it YLOD again. then i refluxed and reflowed and it worked for 3 days, then i dicided that the problem was more than just the areas i was reflowing so my last chance was to refulux everything on the board. so i put it on a baking tray and put in the oven at 200c for 15 mins witch was nerve rackin, i managed to put it back together with my fingers crossed lol and it worked. i have since keep my ps3 upright with loads of room around it and built my own big fan set up that i like to call the psCHIMNEY.

Hi there,

Newbie here - I just bought a ps3 for christmas and havnt even gotten it out of the box yet BUT while I was researching it before buying it I found a site that might help you guys out. It sure made me more comfortable that I wasnt wasting my cash.

Its a guide for $29 to fix the red light yello light in under an hour. With a 60 day return policy so if youve tried the stuff this guy says and it doesnt work you havent lost anything by trying.

Sorry if this is out of line, but I figured it doesnt hurt to tell you what I found.

No, you need to use the heat gun otherwise it's a pointless waste of time.

It would be interesting to know if they do anything different to the methods that we've already tried. Would also be nice to see if it really is a permanent fix as my PS3 died last night while playing Batman - Arkham Asylum

Ps3fix - Looking at the pictures on that site it shows him using a heatgun on the chips just the same as we are doing here. Sounds to me like he is talking it up a bit more and claiming it is a permanent fix ..

sorry I didnt know re advertising.

And you havent lost 29 bucks! they refund it anytime in 60 days. I know clickbank (ive bought some dodgy stuff and some good stuff through them) They are as reputable as paypal themselves. The seller has no say over whether or not to accept returns if they want to list on clickbank they have to give 60days no questions returns policy.

I was just trying to help...

So I tried the heatgun + flux method on my ps3 last night using gilsky's video guide on youtube (cheers mate), and it worked wonders. After i'd finished I put my ps3 back together and plugged it all in, and I was reluctant on pressing the power button just incase it hadn't worked, but I did and it booted up nicely, Video and Audio working nice and running quieter than ever.

Cheers Gilsky for the guide and I recommend it, might not be permenant but once you get a heat gun, little cost is required for keeping your beast up and running :P.

The two part YouTube fix (i.e. not the Gilksy one) does recommend you heat the board gently all over on both sides before concentrating on the CPU and GPU.
