Surely you can work out how to close the top? It's sometimes a bit tricky to line the screw up but should get it in a couple of tries.
If thats all thats holding you up giving it into them, then persevere :) I don't know why that would make any difference though as without the sticker it's obvious that someone has cracked into it ..
Good luck with it!

Bah, tried reflowing the beast again and it's finally died. I did it a few weeks ago and everything was running fine, booted it up the other night and got the YLOD. SO I reflowed it again and it booted up, I managed to sign into PSN and then the screen went all dodgy with green patches everywhere, so I reflowed it once more, and now I'm just stuck with a green light, nothing on the screen and no audio. I guess it's dead now >=(

No, you need to use the heat gun otherwise it's a pointless waste of time.
Not true I've used a hairdryer & have had good success so far I have a 60gig & 40gig what I do is take the ps3 apart take the main board suspend it in a closed box then I make a small hole put the hairdryer through it & let it sit for 30-35 minutes & it works again

Yes there are several ways to heat the board. I was just saying that imanewguy's plan to just do the thermal compound would be pointless without the heat.
BTW how long did the box method last or is it still working. Would like to try that method next time.

and while talking to sony i learned that they can either service your model for 150 bucks if its out of warranty(they dont care about the sticker) OR they can take your ps3 as trading value and sell you a ps3 slim for 120 bucks. i know the slim isnt as good but any 3 is better than no 3 at all and now i dont think they'll take it because ive opened it and cant close the top...sucks
so you are saying that sony will give you a credit? what if it was opened? will you ship it to them or how does the exchange happen? what country do you live in?
I figure if my ps3 dies i might trade it in whether it is fixable or not. i'm sorta tired of tinkering with it.
Thanks.

they told me they can take your ps3 and sell you a slim for 120...i believe theyll send you the box and shipping label as they would if your were sending in your 3 to be serviced and once they receive payment theyll send you the slim. pretty good deal if you ask me
however they told me they will not service the 3 if it has been tampered with or modded or serviced by a third party so i assume they also wont take it as trade in as well if its been tampered with
the important thing is that your 3 NOT look that way. nothing should be missing or broken or obviously patched on the inside...i live in the US by the way

Now you've opened it I doubt they will take it back. There is a seal you have to break to get in, so you can either pay a 3rd party like PS Pro's to fix it or you have a very expensive paperweight! I got mine repaired and sold it on ebay, (advising the work it'd had done obviously) it was the 60gb so I got good money and bought the slim instead.
I'm in the UK and they have sites over here, they are an American company though, with a good rep

the seal is just to indicate you are still under warranty. if your warranty has expired it doesnt matter if the sticker is still on there or not because you still have to pay.

Hey guys, new to the forum but have some information on the ylod...
My PS3 fell sick to the YLOD a few weeks ago. I fixed it with a heatgun, but it only lasted a week. I am now stuck at a point where I am unsure what to do.
I've emailed PlayStation helpdesk asking where to go with my PS3.
My PS3 is just over 2 years old, the PS3 40gb. Now, i'm sorry, but is 2 YEARS a "reasonable amount of time"? Here in the UK there is something called, "the sales of goods act". Customers are un-aware of the rights they have for a replacement from the shop.
It might sound strange, but it's true. Upto 6 years, but, quite a big but in my case, you have to prove there was an inherent fault when you purchased the product. How am I meant to do that? With a broken blu-ray drive, ok, it's OBVIOUS what's broken. But the ylod? It may be ANYTHING inside the PS3. I can't tell the shop I tried to fix it, they'll just chuck me out..
I'm calling the shop I got it from tomorrow, "PC World". Hopefully I can argue myself into getting it replaced. If not that, i'll either call Sony or just save up for another PS3.
I thought about saving for one, really though it through. It just isn't possible for me. I can save the money, fine, but the PS3 is everything to me. I thought to myself "when i'm doing work and turn over to my PS3, I won't be able to get my work done."
It really is that serious, an addiction in-fact.
I'm under 18, no easy cash flow, (not saying working is "easy"), I can't ask my mum for £130, she'll probably say yes but i'm not prepared to do that.
I heard you can give Sony £120, give them your old PS3 then get a new PS3 slim instead. Can somebody confirm this for me?
Hope you read this Sony, your console is ADDICTING... << read it.
Taz.

You aren't the only one that finds it addictive. When mine died it felt like a part of me died. I do EVERYTHING through it (minus internet) from PlayTV all day long, to games and movies and music and photos etc. It is on from the time we get up to the time we go to bed! Probably not the best for the environment, but hey .. we need to be entertained!
When it busted, I really didn't know what to do with myself. Freeview through the built in box in the TV just didn't feel right .. hehe
I was lucky that I have a cash flow and could go and buy a Slim while I repaired the 60GB .. I wish you luck and speed in what you decide to do :)
I don't like your chances with PC World, given it is out of store warranty they won't even listen to your plea. 2 years however simply isn't long enough life expectancy from a device such as a PS3 .. they aren't cheap!
You will probably have to take it up directly with Sony, and from what I saw on Watchdog, I think the company has to admit an inherent fault before you can claim that loophole .. but worth a try for sure.
Sadly, you might just have to fork out for another one or an exchange. Weigh up what you can get for it on eBay, they even sell quite well with YLOD! Seach YLOD on eBay and you might be pleasantly surprised.

It's like you're reading my mind... Seriously, everything you mentioned except the cash flow is what I do on my PS3..
Except the cash flow, ha. I was building up the courage to ask my mum for £100 so I could buy a new one but i'm unsure... I actually don't want to get rid of my old one, it's like family now. I know it can be fixed, but my brother said he doesn't want to let me heat gun it again, because of the risks.
I want a 120gb preferably, I already have a 250gb hardrive in my old PS3.. I backed up my game saves in the week I had left with the PS3 and just out of luck, deactivated the accounts a DAY before it broke again!
You know of any offers going around? My mum bought me a 120gb Xbox Elite for christmas, so asking her is out of the picture.

Like family .. haha. I know the feeling :) I felt like I was betraying my history or something when I bought the Slim, but it rocks :)
Why does your brother not let you attempt a fix? If it has already been done then there is no risk since it's still dead!! Use flux this time, or ensure you are doing all the areas for the required time etc etc. It's a fun (yet nerveracking) task anyway .. haha!
Anyone had YLOD with a standard HDD in it? Mine was a 320GB drive. Don't think it would make any difference, but hmmmm.
As for offers .. I just went into Gamestation, and they had the 250GB Slim with Uncharted 2 and Fifa 10 for £260 I think. I had already completed Drake to Platinum and sold the game for more than I bought it for, so knew I could sell an unopened one for more and make some money. Sold both games and got ~£65 for them both so brought the price down nicely!
You know you really want to sell the Xbox and get a Slim :P

Ha, couldn't do that. I asked my mum for the Xbox... Theres GTA DLC I wanted, so that's what I use it for.
Anyway, to do with the heatgun. My brother knows a lot about electronics... He was un-sure about be putting a heatgun to a £350 system. I did it while he was out of the room, and it worked, but he said he wasn't doing this again.
What options do I actually have. I don't want to get rid of my PS3, it means too much to me. Sony offer really poor services for people with the ylod.. No decent exchange...
Just 2 weeks ago I spent £145 on a new monitor for my PC.. ha. If I hadn't have done that, I would have £275 now!
I said to my mum that, but she says "stuff breaks". I've borrowed money from my mum before to get stuff, I don't want to get into a habit where i'll get a credit card!
Do you have an IM? Skype or MSN? Send me your name through a PM if you like... Bit awkward coming back to this forum everytime I need to answer..

Yeah I have AIM, ICQ, MSN etc, but don't know how to PM on this site .. ROFL!
I don't see the harm in doing another reflow with the heatgun. The parts are made to be able to take the heat and probably get baked in an oven when they are made anyway!
Since it's absolutely useless in it's current state, you really have nothing to lose trying! I don't see what your brother is getting at :S

Yep my 80gb PS3 with standard HDD has failed 3 times so far. Each time I went to re-flow the fix lasted for about 1.5-2 months. This last re-flow I added some flux, but I think I purchased the wrong type, I got the Rosin Flux, not completely liquid, but I used a tooth pick to place just a little bit on the sauder points on the smaller 4 chips and it seems to be working out just fine. I play a ridiculous amount of Modern Warfare 2 and have been on a Holiday Shutdown since Dec 23, so I have been putting in at least 5-8 up to 12 hours of gaming in a day, (yes I'm addicted as well), but I reserve all of my other duties, (Media server activities), to my XBox 360. I bought it just because, and I never play games on it so it works out well!
I'm with WallyHale on this though, you have already Re-Flowed with success once, I say let er rip again, before you let it R.I.P. for good.

Good idea - It's not allowed anyhow :) I'm sure you can quess why - you know spammers and what not.
Anyhoo look to the right of someone's post - you'll see an icon of a person with a curved arrow pointing to them - click on that to pm someone.
Or at the top of the forum page under the tabs you'll see a hyper link saying 'Compose a Private Message.'

40=month & counting 60=2 weeks then needs another treatment but I think restoring the ps3 helps

Well, my brother will lend me £60, which I didn't ask for, btw.. Still need to get £60 together..
I do feel pretty s**t but I think that's down to going to sleep at 3am than losing my PS3! I'm still a kid, still learning..
Putting a heatgun to a £350 piece of kit takes nerves, especially if you're attached to it. It's not nice seeing the PS3 in such a bad state, all that power wasted, because of shoddy solder they use up at Sony.. They do anything to cut costs...
If anyone knows of any good deals on the PS3 slim, please tell me.. I have £20 WHSmith vouchers... Is there anywhere I could trade them in for cash? Do WHSmith sell PS3's? Maybe I could just get one there and spend them vouchers I get every year for 100% attendance at school :D:D
