Now "That's" a lot of hot air! The tech spent a couple of hours checking out my computer, replacing files and everything. I watched him do it right on my screen. "Corrupt files" means he's making his boss happy. He clearly was getting frustrated by his inability to help me. I let him off the hook when I agreed to re-install the OS!

Here's what started it all!

Windows "forced" SP3 on me. It gave me a balloon at the bottom telling me I had until Feb 14th to upgrade to SP3. I clicked the box telling them not to ask again, and clicked OK. Everything was fine! When I shut down for the night, it installed SP3. Now my WLM won't sign in, and Micro$oft can't fix it! It took over 5 minutes, just for the computer to post when I turned it back on, after the Update. So nice of M$ to warn you! Thankfully I was making a pot of coffee at the time, so while I was making up my mind what to do about the black screen, it posted! I just did a fresh install of XP-Pro, within the past week too! Looks like I get to do it all over again!

Thanks micro$oft,
Russ

Oh I know that all right! What really irks me is that I have automatic updates turned off in both the "Automatic Updates" and the "Security Center". It shouldn't have notified me about SP3, let alone install it without permission. It's as bad as telling Yahoo, you don't want the Yahoo toolbar, and yet there it is, when you open your browser! What's the point of asking!

Still, there's always a positive side. I was finished with the overclock! LOL!! It'll take the better part of 2 days to get everything set up again. At least it will do it faster this time! ROFLMAO!!

Best Regards,
Russ

sammorris,
I just installed the new Yahoo Messenger 2010 for Windows. It's far superior to WLM. Easy to install with a minimal amount of fuss. The Webcam setup was just as easy. You get a Mail Client and Messenger without all the other Yahoo crap, unless you want it. Rick's webcam looked good when he hooked it up!

Russ

Good to know about the NEW Yahoo Messenger... I've used Skype before and actually like it just fine. ;)

ddp,
I tried. It wasn't able to do it. It went through the whole bit until it was almost complete, and then told me that it couldn't restore it to that date. The OS was only installed last week, so it only had about a weeks worth of restore points and none of them would work. I also tried to uninstall SP3, and that wouldn't work either!

I'm going to do fresh install of XP-Pro, this weekend. I've done a bunch of testing, and I can't find anything wrong.

Here's the intel Burn Test

Here's the max temps reached doing it.

IBT is real good for showing processor errors, and there are none, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the overclock. I scanned all the files on the boot drive, and there are no corrupt files!

5 passes aren't nearly enough for a serious test from my experience, but are generally just fine if the comp won't be pushed really hard for long periods of time. Probably going to use 2-3 hours of prime95 as my final stability test on my next OC.

5 passes of IBT is just as good as 2-3 hours of Prime95. thats just how good IBT is. it does the same amount of work as P95 in alot less time... just look at your temps when you do IBT then look at prime95 it takes 10hours of prime to reach the same temps as IBT does in 5-7 mins. 10-15 passes of IBT is like doing 24+ hours of P95

Might I add, I've seen a lot of computers (some of them my own), that were run for 10, 12, even 24 hours with Prime95, that wouldn't/didn't make 5 passes through IBT. Then again, I've seen computers make 10 passes with IBT, that wouldn't fold. The big problem with folding as an overclocking guide, is the time it takes to find out if your overclock is good or not. If it completes the work units, it's usually good. If it doesn't, time to do some more tweaking in the setup.

DVDRB/CCE is another program that will crash the computer after running Prime95 all night. Most times it will faintly bluescreen at about 20% of the Encode. Temperatures were not the problem, just too many math errors from the processor going uncorrected, so CCE crashes the computer. As you can imagine video Encoding requires very precise math at tremendous speeds to get a decent time for the Encode.

Red_Maw,
I was just looking for processor errors. I ran all 4 cores, 100% for 10 hours with Multi-Core P95. No problems or temperature issues at all. Folding at home seems to be the best test, because you can stress test it all night without failure, yet Folding might not complete the Work Units because of uncorrected processor errors, which means it wasn't 100% stable in spite of all the stress testing.

I would have to vote with you RoBo on the matter IBT. I just did a IBT 15 Pass in about 6 mins my system is stable at 3935ghz and locked,

True you get lesser temps using Prime95 then IBT my temps don't get that high with a hour of Prime and with DVD Rebuilder cpu usage is 56% and that's average of 22 to 27 mins with 2 passes depends on the dvd9 that I'm rebuilding, from my side having both intel Q9550 and The Amd 965BE C3 the intel runs way cooler with 3 pipes than my 965 that needs 4 pipes to keep even the temps the same and Russ was right you have to have the right air flow in your case to keep things cool, The most stress my systems see is Decoding and Recoding anyway for the gamers out there like sam among others they are producing alot of stress and timing of heat build up just depends on how long there playing the games and what not my point is are you gonna Play a Game for 24 hours Robo? anyway, I'm mostly at idle 90% of the time these days it don't take heat or stress to surf the internet and look at newegg and other things you like surfing for.lol another words, i'm crusing in a cadillac:)

Anyone know how to run a psu without a MB? I've tried "jumping" it by connecting the green wire on the 24pin pin connector a with wire, and subsequently a paper clip when that failed, to every black wire on the 24pin pin connector and all I can get is a very slight twitch of the fan.

edit: Got a bite after connecting a fan :D, although it shut itself after a couple seconds :( Not sure it's going to work for me since all I need it for is a pump and some fans.

Green to any black will in essence, hotwire the PSU. I've done it on several occasions. Very useful. It shut itself off though? I wonder if it has some kind of sensor preventing that. But I don't understand why they would do that...

The green to black needs to be maintained. As a bridge.

Well...I have 2 400w's, a 550W, and a 750W corsair. All of them are rock solid. Well, they're not all mine :p But they have seen my hands LOL! Until I experience a problem, corsair will be my first pick when it comes to PSU's. Although Sea sonic is incredible too. Of course I think THEY make Corsairs power supplies ;) My brothers HTPC has a sea sonic PSU in it. Seems to be solid as well. Glad I elected to buy that bad boy.

Just saw it Omega, but nice going on 3.9GHz!!! Very nice OC. Same to you as well Russ. Great job on 3.82GHz. Glad to see you guys are cranking 'em up. lol. I can boot and IBT 30 minutes stable at 3.8 w/ 1.55v which AFAIK is safe but gets a bit too toasty for my liking... These older Phenom IIs suck voltage like crazy! I might be tempted to sell mine off in favor of a second hand 955 guaranteed to 3.9 with reasonable volts(~1.45v).

Despite the low CPU voltage, the Northbridge voltage is at 1.3V. Which is apparently heating things up ;) The cpu is averaging 4-5C higher at idle. Which is why i'd like to look into water cooling now. And if i'm doing that, I might as well see just how far I can take this bad boy LOL!

If anybody has some fancy dancy water coolers to present to me, I'm all ears LOL! Seriously though, I haven't done a lot of searching on water coolers. What IS the champion in that respect? Hopefully under 100$??? And darn NEAR guaranteed to not leak. I realize that's a risk with such technology, but it should be RARE!
