The problem with the first one is there are too many reference frames (ref=5). In the second ref=4, which is the high limit for 1080p movies. Your only options are to re-encode the movie, or if there is a media streamer than can transcode on the fly to a different codec.

Thanks for the quick reply, so I have to recode but into what format?
I have tsmuxer and meGUI can I do it with that?
Also I'm using an external hard drive which I plug into the ps3 if possible I would like to continue to do it this way, because when I stream it's very choppy.
Thanks in advance for the help

You can use MeGUI and recode to the same codec the MKV is... which is h264.

-Tool --> New AVS Scrpit (AviSynth Script)
-Load your MKV, close the preview window once it pops up
-Save, close the preview window once it pops up.
-Set the File Foramt to RAWAVC
-Set the Encoder settings to a proper Blu-ray profile. I suggest SA_Blu-ray_Fast.
-Press the Enqueue button
-Go to the Queue tab and press start.

If you have everything configured properly it should start encoding, if you don't you may need to install AviSynth, Haali Media Splitter, and or CCCP.

Once it is finished recoding you can use tsMuxeR to remux your new h264 file with the original AC3 audio to m2ts.

hey odin, k so I followed your instructions but ran into a problem.

1st question is when i hit enqeue in megui 2 jobs show up for the same file do i need to complete both jobs.

2nd i completed the first job which took 12hours geez, but when i try to add it to tsmuxer i get an error that says unsupported format;
cant detect stream type. File name: etc...

Did i do something wrong or do i need to try and convert the job 2 as well

sorry if this has been mentioned, but why don't you just use mkv2vob?

Set video transcoding to automatic, transcoding codec to x264 (slow), choose your preferred audio language and subtitle language, set filesplitting to 4GB (since you're using an external HDD) and you're good to go. it will take hours to transcode, as you've already found out.

But it's an automated process.

You can also select "always transcode DTS" if you don't have a receiver capable of DTS.

Hey thanks for the info regarding the mkvvob, Ive never used that, but ill wait to see what odin says, since im curious as to why my first attempt didnt work.

And if that mkvvob is a better choice afterwards il try it thanks.
Oh using that program mvkvob will i lose video/audio quality?

dts sound doesnt work on the ps3 as far as i know, so i always convert it to ac3.

any time you transcode (or recode), you lose some quality. but if there's too many reference frames for the profile, there's no way around it.

if you want the absolute best quality and you're willing to transcode for even longer, then choose "x264 (high bitrate)".. but your file will be huge and you probably won't notice much of a difference.

mkv2vob automates all of this.. drag your file in and you're done. it will either transcode (if it needs it) or it will remux (no quality loss and the file is done in a couple minutes).

just make sure mkv2vob is set to transcoding: automatic and it will do all the work for you.

as for DTS in a file on the PS3, yes it does work with mkv2vob. With the help from a forum member, 3r1c was able to trick the PS3 into playing DTS in a file. works like a champ.

you don't need mt2s.. just leave file output set to automatic, and it will generate an .mpg extension (MPEG TS) container which is the most compatible with all the media streamers out there.

It's a two pass process.. just hit start on the first job and the second will start immediately afterwards. You might have tried to add the file while it was still encoding. Did you remember to set the output to RAWAVC.

By the way, in case anyone's interested, my .vob issue from a few weeks ago? Where I couldn't press Square for scene access? Remuxing it to .m2ts fixed it. Figure that.

Anyway, just a heads-up.

Ok so reporting back I have completed the mkv4vob way of converting video and it worked like a charm. The megiu way is currently re encoding so ill post that probably by tomorrow if it worked or not. K i just have 2 more questions?

I download a new movie and it en tales PGS text streams(Two of them) what is that, and do I need them?

and it also has two audio streams as well, 640kbs,48.0/kHz, 6 channels, Ac-3 and the other is the exact same just add this (True-HD) at the end, do i need both streams and really whats the difference cause they look the same to me??

you can't play TrueHD in a file on the PS3, so you can demux with mkvextract, remove that audio, and remux with mkvmerge.. then you can drop the file into mkv2vob.

as for PGS text stream, never heard of it.

To Odin or Ryu!!! Lokros From Venezuela

I been having alot of problems converting mkv to avchd so my ps3 can read it as a movie disk, the idea is the following:

I have a bunch of MKV need to backup them into AVCHD since is the best way to put it into a DUAL LAYER disk (maybe im wrong if this is the best way) so my ps3 can read is as movie once i put the disk inside the console.

I been using TSMuxeR, then i use BD_Rebuilder to reconvert the space, then finally i set up imgburn to udf 2.5 and nothing the ps3 read the disk as DATA DISK what im doing wrong?

Need the best experience person to explain what im doing wrong pls, Thanks

Question is why my PS3 read the disk as DATA DISK? not as a movie.

Ok the pgs text files, in txmuxer are called "presentation graphic stream#0", and there is another same name but with a "#1"

anyone know what these are and if I need them or the ps3 can read this?

some quick googling shows that the PGS streams are subtitles. The only way the PS3 can read them is if it's in the AVCHD or Blu-ray structure - you can't stream a file with PGS (nor have it read from USB flash drive or external HD) unless it's in those 2 formats.

so if you're just going to be streaming and you want subtitles, you'll need to convert those PGS files.

Hey thanks lamenting youve been a great help!

Got another question though lol, I have file I downloaded, it is in vc-1 format with ac3 audio, and already is in m2ts, though when I try to play it in the ps3 it comes up as corrupted or unsupported??

I thought i would probably have to convert again, but mkv2vob does not see it or recognize it. How would I convert this if I have to?

and the subtitles I dont need. I have another film I converted but it has subtitles throughout the whole film, is there any way of removing the subtitles, without re encoding the whole thing again. Tried using tsmuxer but it doesnt show the audio. Keep in mind im using the converted files not the original, so the files are in m2ts.\

Thanks in advance!

I have an Ice Age.mkv file which I converted to .m2ts via TSMUXER but for some reason I don't have any audio. What I am trying to do is play this Ice Age.m2ts file on my PS3 which it does play fine but there is no audio. I don't know if I am doing anything wrong so if anyone knows what is wrong please let me know. The TSMuxer info is as follows:

source file codec lang track info

Ice Age.mkv H.264 und High@4.1 1280x688p
Ice Age.mkv DTS und 1536kbps 48khz 5.1

Is there any reason why it doesn't have audio but video only? I have tried selecting M2TS muxing and AVCHD but both outputs have no audio when playing on my PS3 via USB Drive. Any help would be great.

Hey poolpro, yes the ps3 doesnt read dts audio files. You have to use tsmuxer and demux (extract) the audio file, then convert the dts file into ac3, after that you have to m2ts the video file, and the new acs audio file.

Use Megui to convert the dts into ac3. Insert the audio file, then select afetn ac3 scratchpad and hit enqeue then under that tab click start. It might look like its not doing anything but just be patient.

I install MeGui but everytime I try to open program it gives me an error saying The Application failed to initialize properly. What gives? Is there another program that allows me to change DTS audio into AC3?

the PS3 can be tricked into playing DTS in a file by using mkv2vob (and with streaming it via PS3 Media Server, which uses the same trick).

so poolpro, drop your file into mkv2vob and you should be good to go.

Well I got the DTS file to encode to AC3 using DaudioK and movie is goo to go.Put resulting file from TsMuxer onto USB and played it on PS3 with good sound as well. I was looking to convert DTS into AAC but I can't find any programs that will do that for free.

why would you want to convert DTS to AAC when mkv2vob can convert DTS to AC3?

if you don't have a receiver capable of playing DTS, then in mkv2vob just check the box "Always transcode DTS" and it will convert it to AC3 for you.

but as I said, the PS3 can be tricked into playing DTS in a file. so if you have a capable DTS receiver, then don't check "Always transcode DTS" and you'll have DTS sound.
