I tested some of the inkjet fixative I used for decal making on a printed DVD. I works ok but only a very light coat can be used. If a wet coat is attempted for a good seal it wants to fish-eye and bead up.
Even with a very light coat it seals it pretty good. I placed it under running water and rubbed it a lot and only a very small amount of ink washed off, only where the fixative hadn't covered it completely.
A second coat doesn't work well because it builds up in lumps, fish-eye and beading.
I searched around and found this fixative made for sealing inkjet inks and it even states for printable CD and DVD media.
It's in the UK so it's not feasible for me to do.
Maybe someone can give it a try and let us know how well it works.

Just talked with the tech who has my R200. He said he replaced all the parts...AGAIN.......and it still doesn't work. He says Epson will replace the printer but they want a copy of my sales receipt. I know when and where I bought it and what I paid for it (Quickbooks) but my office was moved while I remodel the house and everything I have is in boxes. I don't know where to look for the receipt itself. He thinks he can get it exchanged anyway. I've got my fingers crossed.

I know at Best Buy you can get a duplicate sales receipt. I'm sure most stores do the same. So if you really need it to get the printer replaced call the store they should be able to give you a dup receipt.

I use private.abacus24-7.com
the epson ink is $2.80 a cart ! (buy the 12 of 24 2/4 full set options) $33 or $67
I also get the ink for my canon there BCI3 carts. $1.74 a pop (in 4pack sets)
epson is $4.45 singly canon $1.85 singly
We go through about $500 of ink a month (at those prices thats an awful lot of ink) and never a problem yet. I use printable media from supermediastore.com stay away from the pro disc they used to be great but now the failure rate is nearing 100% at least in my drives.
so I use the Ridata hub printable's

quaility depends on the original and how scanner friendly it is.
the dupes are never as "vibrant" as the originals most of the time but if its scanner friendly its VERY nice !
using original content its amazing ! I was just able to fit my cancun pictures on a single dvd so I took an amazing parrot close up I got and used that as the disc image. STUNNING is all I can say :-)
DO NOT MAKE PRINTS WITH THE EPSON buy another printer for making prints. use the epson as a DEDICATED CD/DVD printer and NEVER use labels
why ? they have a built in expiration (you can disable this with some tricks do a google)
since printable media has a VERY clean smooth finish you wont have to worry about "debris" gathering on the print head or anything else inside the printer. it will last a lot longer. we have printed well over 2000 discs so far (probably closer to 3000) and no problem yet.
the reason I say no to labels is that labels are usually normal paper with fibers etc.. ie the same problem as using paper to make prints/ Debris can build up on parts inside)
if you have trouble feeding the Disc Tray after many prints ie it keeps jamming up etc.. just cut off the thin clear lip part on the front. this will mean you will have to "help" it into the printer when it starts to print. once it sucks it in you can leave it unattended no problems.
we have 2 of these and they print 10-50 discs a DAY most times and in 6 months no problems (major) yet. print quality always perfect. so if you can afford it NEVER print ANYTHING on it but discs. it will last a lot longer.
this also means it wont eat up ink to quickly (it dont take much to print a disc)
I use a canon for prints. it has better edge to edge is lightning fast and if you use the i550 i560 or pixma 3000 line it uses the ultra cheap BCI3 carts.
my favorite source of paper though expensive is PSinkmaster.com WATERPROOF paper !! ie once prints are done water will not harm them at all ! very very nice ! Otherwise I oddly prefer the Canon heavy weight photo matt paper. good paper awesome colors. glossy smears too easy or sticks/fades to easily.
the glossy inkmaster paper has no such smear/sticky issues but it WILL fade if left in too much direct sunlight like any other glossy paper.

I will be getting a new replacement Epson R200 because of the inability of Epson to repair my old one. While I agree about the dedicated use of the Epson for DVD/CD printing, I find it hard to imagine how you went through 2000 DVDs without a hitch. Several posters here report 250-300 as the point at which it both runs out of ink AND stops feeding correctly. I could live with having to nudge it in but mine wouldn't eject the disk correctly after printing and it went into a mode which required me to shut off the printer and wait a few minutes until I could delete the queue in Windows and to restart it and only then proceed to my next disk. Not something one could easily live with.

Sorry to jump in here--but I came across this thread and it has a lot of info regarding the Epson Sylus Photo R200--I just bought one and have the hub printable DVD+R (Taiyo Yuden) but cannot find a site where I can get the actual artwork--I use another site for my cases, but am not sure what to exactly look for so that I can print my DVD's to closely match my originals. Thanks for any help--

I mainly use http://www.cdcovers.cc/. Click on covers than DVD. Find the movie and you'll see what's available (front, cd etc.) You'll more than likely have to resize it but with Epson's Print CD it's easy. I've printed several to disc from this site that I've resized they look good.
You can also try http://www.covers.to/ though they don't have as many as CDcovers

i just printed my first dvd with the r200. i have the ridata g05 dvds and they suck because everyone of them has "RIDATA PRINTABLE DISC"(plus disc info), on the printable hub.
i purposely bought these for the printable hub and then find out ridata had to use the space i paid for, for their name. that is some BS. who do they think they are?
anybody know of some well known, high quality, printable hub discs without text already on the printing surface?

brockb--
I have printed the Taiyo Yuden DVD+R nopw quite a bit--they are great--I used Supermediastore---Just ordered a 50 pack of the Verbatim "Data-Life Plus" and am waiting for delivery--Hope they are as good--supposed to be--these are 12X rated and my burner is max 4x, so hoping they are OK--Can't believe that about the Ridata brand--they are usually reputable--

I did the same thing, bought the same disks with their name in the hub. I was disappointed in them being it was there.
Also the other Ridata printable disks I bought had about 25% of them with the center holes off really bad and they look like crap when printed.
I too would like to know of a good printable disk with and without a printable hub.

i thought my printer was off a little, but just discovered it was the printing area on the disc. it is not centered.
the g05 is supposed to be a reputable disc. the quality of material is there i guess but, the workmanship and blatent advertising is not so good.

Mine weren't off a little, they were off a 1/4" or more on about 25% of them.
Also on the printable hub Ridatas there are purple circles on most of them where the ridge from the bottom of the disks rub the printable material off the disk below it.
It doesn't show too bad if printing a dark disk but stands out like a sore thumb on lighter printings.
I wont be buying any more of them that's for sure.
Oh, and the advertised 8x will only burn at 4x in my NEC 3520a with the latest firmware.

are you guys serious?/ the printer will shut itself down after a certain time?
what the hell is going on with computer parts and accesories?
i just discovered my dvd drive only allows you to change the region of dvd it plays 4 times. after that its stuck in the last region you chose.
luckily after dawn is here and we can get around this stuff but most consumers would just give up and buy a new printer or dvd drive. these companies are completly dishonest. screw em!

I looked at the document and what you are doing is resetting the chip on the epson cartridges so, so you can refill them more often, is this correct?
I have a r200 and have printed over 1,000 cd's and have no problem with it at all, I just buy generic cartridges
Its hard for me to believe the printers will just stop working, I think somebody is just trying to get people to buy something, I could be wrong, if it breaks, shit you can buy them for $80.00

no eventually the printer will stop working claiming that service is required something about the waste ink tank. its usually bogus and a preset mathmatical limit even though the printer is just fine
wanna know what the suggested rapair method is ? buy a new printer.!
yeah right toss a perfectly good printer just because some chip says its no good since I reset the printer I have printed way more than another 1000 discs no problems yet. only problem is I have to "nudge" the tray initially to get it tosuck it in. no problem otherwise prints great. no ink leaking anywhere. Epsons really bad for that :-(
they also tend to set those chip to declare the cartridge LONG LONG before its really empty. sometimes when its still half full and I have seen that for myself.
print 9 full bleed prints. it declares the cartridge empty I reset the cartridge stick it back in and get 11 more full bleed prints from it.
Grrrr

I am not near the printer now to test it and I have not done this in a long time so I do not recall but this should be it
Rather than having to use the Epson utility to reset the error message/counter, you can also use these tested procedures I found on the web:
1. Press and hold 'stop' 'maintenance' and 'power' buttons for about 10 seconds, a message will come on the screen saying counter is reset and to turn off.
2. Turn your printer off and then back on - job done.
3. When resetting the counters you should really replace the waste ink pad but can get away with removing the pad then washing it out and allowing it to dry before putting it back into the printer.
#3 is phooey they are alcohol based its not likely you do enough printing to NEED to really empty them. in in doubt make sure it aint on anything you would not want ink on :-) i have never once seen one leak but dont hold me to it :-)

STAY AWAY FROM EPSON,, the r200 picture wuality is fine, but the printer kinda sucks.. but even worse is the customer service..
you cant talk to anyone, you have to only talk to an automated cs.. and it was down. So there was no cs at all!. they will not replace a printer if its broke, you have to take it to an authorized dealer, which in my case is 6 hours away, and get it Fixed.. cant replace, only fix.
no shipping paid..
id get a canon. i used to like this printer but after dealing with their bullsht i cant stand them anymore.
