Alright, finally got my fliptop installed and everything seems to be running as advertised. My only question is this: what do I need now to play my ps 1 backups? Will Gameshark do it? If so, which version of Gameshark is best for this? Any and all help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

TIA

Not all backup. Some games read boot code (authencity) from DVD after starting game. You can't play this kind of game with DVD backup using flip-top and swap magic. You'll need CD loader to run backup. But even cd loader won't let you run backup, if you have V7 or above.

Ok, having read this thread as a noob, there seem to be some different opinions on some things, so I would really appreciate your bearing with what may be (to you) a simple question.

I have one of the very original PS2s which I got the first day they came out. From modchipkits.com, I'm positive its a V1 10-screw case and a V1 motherboard. Since the solderless answers are all V4 motherboard and later or don't support DVDs, and since I have no interest in ruining my box with a crappy solder job, I'm looking at the flip-top.

I have a Sony DRU 510A drive which reads and writes DVD +R +RW -R -RW and CD-R -RW. I have the software that came with the drive as well as DVD X-Copy and X-Copy Express.

My questions are these: (1) Most of my games are CD (purple) disks, but a couple are DVD (silver) disks. Will the fliptop and magic disks solution allow me to copy and play both CD and DVD based Playstation 2 games?
(2) Can I use a program like DVD X-Copy to copy both CD and DVD games, or do you have to do them differently?
(3) I'm just backing up my own disks, so I don't care if my CPU ID is burned on the copy by DVD X-Copy. Other than that, is there any reason to use another software package for this (either CD or DVD)?
(4) Regardless of the software, I should be using DVD +R and CD-R disks, right?

Thanks in advance for your help.

(1)- yes
(2)- I'm pretty sure you can use that, whatever will give you exact copies of the disc, i personally use nero, but people use all kinds of burning software.
(3)- Use whatever works best for you.
(4)- PS2's V4 or below have a very hard time reading +R DVD's, you'll probably have better luck with -R, yes use cd-r's for cd based games.

I have a question about fliptops and v7 PS2's. I've search high and low on here and there seem to be conflicting reports. Will my PS2, with fliptop and swap magic discs play dvd-rw and cd-rw media? The reason I ask is because I don't want to have a stack of coasters here if my burns hiccup. Any and all help in this matter would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

most PS2's have a difficult time with RW media. when i first put in a no-sooder chip i got mine to play all kinds of DVD-RW's for about 2 weeks then one day it just quit and has never played one since.

Darthnip - Thanks. Funny you should mention Pre-version 4s having a problem reading DVD +R discs -- I had copied a DVD movie onto a +R disc which worked great in my DVD player but gave me a disc error in my PS2. Wish these systems were all a little more compatible....

One last question: Is there any benefit to ripping a DVD game down onto a CD or is this just an extra step you don't need to bother with if you have a DVD burner?

Thanks again.

in my opinion rips are crap. most of the time the quality is much less. and alot of the games nowadays are a pain to play without those cutscenes and stuff. some people like them because they save money on the media. but if something happens to an original game, a rip just isn't as good of replacement for me, i prefer making a complete backup to DVD-R but thats just my opinion.

correct but its suppose to work with a double swap - using this cdloader program i just finally got ahold of.

After i get it and test it i will let you know.
I'll have to rent it for testing then throw it away after since I dont own it and i dont really want to buy it just for testing.

Ive tried that cd loader and it did not work, didnt even boot, wasted 2 cds.. Anyway I was told GTA Vice City backups wouldnt work using swap magic. Just backed it up and it works fine.
Ive had Trouble with Enter The Matrix, it backed up fine and played fine the first time, then it wouldn't work at all after that, has this happened to any body else ? I use nero and DVD-R media.
My Backups to date are:
WRC2 Extreme
Ratchet and Clank
The Getaway
007 Agent Under Fire
GTA Vice City
Medal Of Honour-Frontline.
Gonna try Metal Gear Solid 2 tomorrow
ps Ive tried to backup Pro Evolution Soccer 2 four times using nero and dvd dycrypter, with different sorts of -media with no joy. Has any one backed up this game yet, please let me know
thanx
