hi all
this is my 1st post and as you can probably tell, i'm a proper noob at this!
i recently bought a psp slim for the intention of downloading iso's or cso's then running them off a memory stick.
i am aware that there are 3 steps to doing this...
create a magic stick;
get hold of a pandora battery, which i now have;
install the UPDATES/ADD ON files.
before i go about doing this, i have some questions which i hope can be answered!
1) i have read a lot of posts saying that the magic stick doesn't need to be of a big size. when i bought my psp, i rushed out and bought an 8gb sony pro duo, thinking i'd be able to store more iso's on it. people say that using an 8gb memory stick as a magic stick is overkill. why is this? can i not use my 8gb memory stick as a magic stick AND use it to put my iso's onto? if i can't do this, what size is recommended for the magic stick?
2) my psp has OFW 3.80. i have seen that dark-alex 3.90 M33-3 CFW is now available. when i change to CFW, should i use 3.90 M33-3, or would one of the previous versions suit my psp better?
3) in this guide (Universal Unbricker V3 Using Official Firmware FAT/SLIM PSP), where it says 'Type in your PSP Drive letter. Then press Enter', should i already have my psp connected to my pc with the data cable? sounds like a daft question but it doesn't say that the psp should be connected anywhere before hand, so just making sure.
4) also in this guide (Universal Unbricker V3 Using Official Firmware FAT/SLIM PSP), where it says 'Now it is time to install the UPDATES/ADD ON files', are the update/add on files copied onto the magic stick when i actually create the magic stick? i'm guessing that's done at the dragging and dropping step of creating the magic stick.
5) once i have used the magic stick and installed CFW, will the magic stick be needed again? in other words, will i be able to keep my 8gb memory stick with the downloaded iso's on it, in the psp and not need the magic stick again to boot the psp?
thanks to anyone that takes the time to read this and reply to any of my questions :)
i'll no doubt have a couple more questions from any answers given lol!
cheers

No it is not different.
The easy installer I use in this guide is the Total Newbie Easy Installer.
The "Total Newbie Easy installer" install 3.71 M33-2 to your PSP. So using the Easy Installer on this guide or downloading an Easy Installer as suggested above will make no difference.
The extra files that you need to drag over is for users that want to update the PSP higher after installing the 3.71 M33-2 firmware. Dragging those files over have nothing to do with the easy installer and will not effect the way the Magic memory Stick performs when unbricking the PSP.
For those suggesting to downloading other programs you can start your own guide and give that info if you think you can do better. All your doing is confusing users that are new to this.

ok.... having formatted the memory stick with mspformat, if i now run the program as listed on this thread it now follows through exactly as it should. when i then boot up with the tool battery the correct menu comes up. so i press X to select install 3.71 M330-2, but then it ultimately ends in a PSAR decode error something-or-other, and then shuts down - if i then boot up again with the tool battery i get the same menu come up, but if i replace the tool battery with the standard psp one it will not boot up at all, i just get the green power battery come on, but nothing on the screen whatsoever, after about 20 seconds or so it just turns itself off.

I think using MSPformat then the easy installer might have messed up the MMS. You should have the Memory Stick formated via PSP before starting the easy installer.
Do you have a Card Reader that supports ProDuo memory sticks or a second PSP that you can connect to via USB?

when i used to just format the memory card with the psp itself the program wouldn't install properly - it would skip stages and then not load up the menu at all when i put in the tool battery. this time, having formatted with mspformat it did at least all install properly and bring the menu up. having initially formatted using mspformat i didn't then format the card again actually through the psp like the program told me to (because of the reasons i just said before) - would it be worth trying this - using mspformat to initially format the card, then format it again actually through the psp settings afterwards as & when the start program tells you to? i have neither a card reader that supports the card, nor a 2nd psp no

That would be the next step is redoing the Magic Memory Stick again. But you said above that the PSP will not boot correct?
Did you happen to make a backup of your NAND?

ah yes good point - well it boots with the tool battery in, if i press O to select the option to install the standard 3.71 firmware i was hoping this would install back on as it should, and that we'd be back where we started so i could retry

I doubt that will work. It seems like it is having issues reading the PBP files. Which you would need to restore to offical as well. You could always try.
Did you backup the NAND before pressing X on your PSP?

Go ahead and try installing 3.71 Offical.
If that dosent work then you will need to find another PSP or find a PC that has a card reader in it to re-create the Magic Memory Stick again.

i'm afraid i get exactly the same error message when i try to install the original 3.71... so i've got real problems now. what happens if i manage to borrow another psp off somebody & basically brick that 1 too in the same 1 i have this? then i won't be able to rectify either of them

if you're saying that getting a correctly working magic memory stick would rectify things would i not be better just buying a cheap 256mb memory stick than risking messing up another psp console?

Re-creating the Magic Memory Stick with another PSP will not brick it. To avoid a possible brick with the borrowed PSP make sure you don't use MMS and Tool Battery in it.
The only reason your PSP is bricked is because the Magic Memory Stick was flashing the CFW to your PSP and had an error this not completing the instillation of the CFW to your PSP.
So use another PSP and format the memory Stick via PSP. Then run the easy installer again like before.
If you still have issues creating the Magic memory Stick try using this guide HERE. It is a guide that shows you how to create the Magic Memory Stick manually without using the easy installer.

im a little stuck...
i've got a psp slim with official 3.95 fw.
I've followed the install instructions 5 times and every time the easy installer doesn't leave any files on the memory stick (after selecting option 4). ie. blank in windows explorer and when copying the contents of the 'addon' folder, there is nothing to overwrite.
Am I missing something?
Im using a 4gb sony gaming stick (100% genuine), I've also got a datel slim battery tool.
Please could someone advise!!??

oh of course yeah, sorry me being silly. ok will do my best to get hold of another psp, thanks for your help - but just to clarify... once i get a magic memory stick actually working i will definitely be able to unbrick my own psp yes? cos it will install correctly rather than error half way through... right? also, one more quick question - would a 256mb official sony memory stick be a suitable card to use if i decide to try another card too? would both a pro, and pro duo work? thanks for all your help...

Use a smaller Memory Stick 512MB to 1GB.

You should use an Official proDuo I would suggest 512MB. As for the other question. I can not guarantee that it will fix the issue you are having. All you can do is make a proper MMS and hope for the best.

so if a "proper" MMS doesn't work i'd have to look into using other unbricking tactics, of there's a chance this could be bricked forever?!

Theres a chance it might be a permanent brick. Some that have received a PSAR decode error have never been able to recover from it. but others have by simply re-creating the MMS. So you won't know till you actually create a proper MMS.
