Hi guys,
I bought a korean wii (english). It only has a gecko os 1.9 channel but no homebrew channel. I thought that homebrew was necessary to install gecko (kindly clarify). my current firmware is 3.2U, gecko only allows to play all region games but not backup games..

so is my system modded or non modded??
which guide should i follow
The one for modded systems or the one for non modded system?

can I simply upgrade the firmware to 4.0 and follow this guide??

I tried using the Backup Launcher channel which was installed when I followed this guide to start a backup disc. I got a black screen and returned to the Backup Launcher menu after a few seconds.
I only have one backup disc at the moment which I created myself to try out the launcher. So I don't really know if the disc is burnt correctly.
I didn't think this issue was related to trying to open the SD card manager from the system menu. Is there a way to fix it please?
In my attempt to fix the issue, I followed the entire softmod process again, and all but 1 of my games are working again, including 1 that didn't before.

I'm pretty much just operating on trial and error, hoping that I don't brick my wii in the process. O.o
Thanks for the reply. I'll have a go at it again. If you're worried about bricking your wii, why don't you take a look at Preloader? I found this to be a good guide http://www.gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=135174 but haven't had time to try it out yet.

I'm not sure if there are better tools. Someone earlier on mentioned a NAND backup but there's no explanation on how to do it. Any ideas please?

Thanks

Back up launcher channel is old, download NeoGamma which is an updated version of the back up launcher channel. http://www.gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=159099

Now you can play out of region games with your Wii, however you run into a risk of bricking your Wii though the out of region updates. To prevent this do Either following

1) Download Preloader (it goes into your Wii) http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader Enable the " Skip disc update check"

A game will no longer check what version of the system menu you have installed. Useful for not bricking a Wii though updates.

2) Or you can download a program called W.i.u http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=90892 ( go down a bit for the 1.1 version

This program goes onto your computer, and after downloading an .iso you can open it using that program and manually remove the update. Also note that you can change the region Pal to NTSC or NTSC to PAl. But this program is only good to remove the update since the region changer is a FAIL ( games tend to crash)

Do keep in mind, less changes you make to the .iso better odds for it to work. With that being said, just download preloader ( It will provide you some protection for bricking your Wii as well)

1) Backup Launcher is old. Neogamma is new http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=158884
1A) to get the Neogamma Channel http://www.gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=165485
2) Superdump (Requires homebrew) dump your game in 30 minutes. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/780900
3) Make your Wii skip updates! Use preloader 0.29 and enable skip updates. http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader
4) Scared of Bricking your Wii? Make an NAND backup! Install BootMii http://bootmii.org/install/

what happens if I dont updgrade my 3.1u unmodded wii to 4.0u before starting this guide??

what if i allow it to update later via a game disc to 4.0u?

Will that update process to 4.0u being done after the softmod process is complete cause needed files to be overwritten??

Will homebrew such as the wadmanager still run and function properly??

Does this work using a SDHC card instead of a SD card? and can this softmod work on a Japanese Wii?

I've skimmed through most of the thread to check for this problem, but I haven't seen anything. Feel free to redirect if that's the case, and my apologies.

I modded my own Wii using this guide about two weeks ago, and everything works fine. Yesterday I helped a friend mod his Wii, using this guide as well and following all of the same steps to mod my own. It worked smoothly at first; immediately after finishing we played some Brawl and Cooking Mama. No problems whatsoever.

However, today, my friend attempts to boot up USB loader, and he encounters a black screen with lots of flashing numbers and text, for just a few seconds, followed by a black screen. Completely frozen and only escapable by a hard reset.

I figured I'd see if I could find something wrong with it, so I brought my own hard drive and SD card over. My SD card works fine, USB loader boots up just fine, etc. His card still doesn't work. But here's the kicker. We went out to buy a brand new SD card (exactly the same as mine). The first time we booted up, everything worked no problem, we assumed it was fixed. but after restarting the Wii to play a different game, we got to the same flashing text screen/freezing. But MY SD CARD STILL WORKS.

Both SD cards are FAT32.
Files from my SD card have been directly copied to his after formatting.
Forwarder.wad has been uninstalled/reinstalled from his SD card.
Directions for modding have been followed exactly.

I honestly have no idea what the problem is. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. And sorry about the giant wall of text, I figured the whole story would seek a better answer than some vague description of what's happening. Props if you read the whole thing.

First off thanks for the guide, well laid out and very easy to follow.

I have a question i am in step 3 of the guide (already had homebrew) and I have run into a snag.

1) didn't install homebrew since i have 1.0.3 installed.
2) Downgraded IOS35 (all appeared to go well).

3) is where i error out (-1035) on both network and wad install:

(With IOS35 selected)
Downloading IOS Pease wait ...
>> Content #15 01 patches applied
>> Content #01 05 patches applied
>> Content #17 18 patches applied
>> Title downloaed successfully!

Adding contents, pleas wait ...
>> Content #18 added successfully!
>> Content #19 added successfully!

Installing custom IOS, please wait ...
>> Install ERROR! (Ret = -1035)

Finishing installation, please wait ... OK!

Press any button to restart ...

This takes me back to the homebrew channel instead of the wii channel.

Before my update to V4.0 (today via network), I had a version 3.3U that was downgraded to 3.2U via:
>> Custom IOS Installer (v37 rev 03)
>> Custom IOS Downgrader v1.0
>> IOS37-64-v2070.wad

I have stopped the installation, just wondering if anyone else has had this error. Note Serial number is a LU58.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

I've installed everything on this guide, from HBC to GC to USB Loader to play channel. Everything installed fine, but...

When I tried to load a backup from the play channel, the channel doesn't the disc. Then I tried to load the game from backup launcher, I get nothing but a blank screen. I've tried to change my settings in the backup launcher, no help.

I've tried to restart the whole process, however, when I tried to do DowngradeIOS35, it gives me this message:

"It seems to me that you are a pirate. bye..."

Besides that step, I've redo the whole process 2 times. I'm still unable to launch backups. Please help me!

Be careful when deleting the ios. It would be a good idea to have preloader installed first in case anything goes wrong. There's a good preloader guide at http://www.gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=13517

1) Launch the Homebrew Channel via the Wii channel menu. Select the cMIOS_rev3 in the Homebrew Channel list. This will start the installer. You need to press A to accept that you have read the disclaimer.

You have 2 options on how to install the cMIOS files (you do not need to do both options!)...

WAD Installation: Google RVL-mios-v8.wad and download it. Then place it in the root of the SD Card. Then chose WAD Instillation option.

Network Installation: At the instillation option screen press right 1 time on the D-pad of the Wiimote. This will download the files via WiFi.

After you have selected the option you want and installed the cMIOS your Wii should reboot to the Wii Channel menu.

Now you can launch the backup Game Cube games from the WiiGator backup launcher channel in the Wii channel menu.

ok i followed this guide, however my wii is not connected to the internet in any way so i dl the wad off the internet, and put it on the root. right now everything runs fine except for gc games and i get the green screen immediately when i try loading a game.

what can i do to fix this >.>

Sweet, thanks for the guide larry. Didnt know that you could mod a vii with version 4 firmware and you dont even need the twighlight hack.

Gonna try this on a friends wii that I couldn't previously mod.

comanche8,

Thanks for the links. With the Wii V4.0 updae my Any Title Deleter brings up many errors and no longer works at least with my current IOS249 (CIOS 37 V3).

You did make me remember that there were CIOS uninstallers out there so i used it to uninstall my old CIOS and successfully installed the new CIOS38. Well, it said it installed successfully, however it took me back to the homebrew channel and not the wii channel hope that isnt a problem.

If it is a problem what should be my next step? Should i just go over the IOS35 downgrade / install / install CIOS38 all over again to be safe?

I can not understand what you are trying to say here.

If you want a channel of Neogamma on your Wii System Menu you have to install a wad of Neogamma using Wad Manager.

You do need the "cIOS thing" to play backups with NeoGamma.

And wowwii, if you were able to install cIOS38, then you don't need to downgrade IOS35 and install cIOS38 again.

I think that sometimes its good to understand what's going on.

The purpose of downgrading IOS35 was so that you could install cIOS38. There isn't any other purpose for it. Downgrading IOS35 before installing cIOS38 doesn't add any special features.

It's like if your goal is to turn on the TV and you pressed the power button on the actual TV instead of using the remote control. You wouldn't turn the TV back off and then turn it on again with the remote control instead. You don't get an extra channels because you turned it on with the remote instead of with the power button on the TV.
