Yes, you will need to follow the method completely eeach time. This is not like the memory card exploit for fat ps2s =(. But it is still the best alternative method besides chip or ordering SM online.

OK guys, I have a couple questions that I really need to have answered. I've read through the whole topic and didn't see anything regarding this but I'm running extremely low on ideas (and now DVD-R's). Here is my situation: I have a V14 SCPH 75001 Slimline PS2 with the Swap Magic 3.6 (Plus edition, I believe)CD/DVD combo and Magic Keys II set installed. I don't have anymore retail copies of GameShark2 V3/4 or AR MAX EVO around (either broke 'em or had someone else mess 'em up)and I want to use my friends backed up copy of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time with a cheat activated. I also have 30gig 5.5G iPod that I use as a USB Stick. I would like to know if it is possible to use this guide to....
1. Install the exploit onto my 16 MB MAX Memory Card
2. Use a Live CD (or whatever I need) to boot an .elf file of a cheat device off of the Mem card.
3. Use the cheat device to activate codes for a game.
4. Swap in the game through my Swap Magic disc or CogSwap (or whateva I need)
I already several .elf files of the cheat devices (GameShark2 V3&4, CodeBreaker 7 and a couple others). I also have a burned copy of an AR Max Evo/CD Loader combo if that helps. I'm trying to do this because that combo I just mentioned will not load the Star Ocean backup at all. I activate the cheats and when it gets to the part where it says "Insert disc by EA Method" and after putting in the backup and pressing load, that lil' star filled/galaxy background (You'd have to have used it to know....) changes from the normal pink (or whateva) to the normal green. Then it goes yellow and finally to a black screen. It also seems that I can only use either of Swap Magic discs once per power cycle on the PS2. This why I need to find someway to launch/trigger the cheat device to activate without using my SM. Then I could activate the codes and whenever it asks me to swap in the game, I'd instead put in my SM DVD. After that SM should not have a problem loading and when it does, I could finally swap out to my backup of Star Ocean. If anyone knows if this is possible or some alternate way of using cheats with a backed up SO:TtEoT and no retail cheat device then please, PLEASE conjur up the patience to read through this enormous post and then muster up a lil' more and post a response to either confirm this or perhaps even help guy on his last leg with this stuff..... Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Great game, by the way. Excellent story and play.
Anyway, back to the point.
Unfortunately, from what I've gathered this is impossible to do. You would need an authentic copy of Action Replay.
Sorry =(

Holy Crap.... Man there is no way I'm gonna even attempt to get 50,000 battles. Alright..... I'm not giving up quite just yet, but this was pretty much my last good hope before running out for another copy of a cheat device (like my 7th one..) Thx for your time and response tho.

BTW, you wouldn't happen to know what step in that process would prove to be my roadblock. Perhaps there is someway to shortcut that.... (Yeah, I know I'm grasping at straws here... but c'mon 50,000 battles!!!)

Well there is something I noticed...
You said you tried to boot star ocean with CD Loader. Instead of that, get up to CD Loader, then use CD Loader to boot ULE, then use ULE to boot cogswap off the ipod. It is all explained in my memory stick method except for getting up to cdloader sounds like you have that taken care of, but once you get to cdloader follow my guide from there.
Good luck!

1) Now that you have all you need, un-zip all the files you downladed with WinRAR and launch PS2 Exploit Utility.
2) Here's what you have to do for each of the tabs:
-Title.db: nothing
-Loader: nothing(keep uLaunchELF 3.61 selected)
-Files: nothing(Cog-Swap will be on the USB memory stick)
-IP Options: click "Yes" ONLY if you will use your PlayStation 2 over a network
-Region: NTSC for NTSC U/C consoles, PAL for PAL, and JAP for NTSC J
-Extras: keep the dummy file the way it is and don't touch any of the options for the buttons
-Create Exploit: select "CD/HD image (bin/cue)" and select "Live CD" in "Options for CD image"
3) Now that everything is set up, click "Create Exploit!". You will get a window saying that there are no title IDs in Title.db, and that no files have been chosen. Click "Yes" both times. When the job is done, you will see this message:
A CD image has been built here: C:\IsCentral\ that can be used as a CD or HD image!
4) When the image file is made, put in your blank CD-R and start Alcohol 120%. Click "Image Burning Wizard". Locate your CD image, click it, then click "Next". You will now be at a window called: Prepare your CD/DVD recorder. Set the write speed to 4X, datatype to PlayStation 2, check "Rectify Sub-Channel Data", then click "Start".
--------------------------------------------------
1) Start cdloader.elf from the memory stick in Max Media Player
2) When the AR disk stops spinning, swap it for the uLaunchElf disk, the one you created with the utility and alcohol and press X.
3) uLaunchElf should load. If it didn't, then one of three things are wrong, 1. You burnt the media wrong, 2. Your laser may need cleaning, or 3. You're using crap media(Memorex and the like).
4) Press select to access the options/config.
5) Scroll down to any button you want. This button will load cogswap.elf from your memory stick when you press it at the main menu. Press O.
6) There should be about 6 or 7 different drives listed here, like both memory cards, etc. Scroll to one that sounds most like your memory stick, mine said "mass" or something like that, it might be that for everyone but idk. Press O.
7) Scroll down and select cogswap.elf and press O.
8) Scroll down to "OK" and press O.
9) Okay, we're down to final step! You should now be back at the main menu. Press the key you assigned to load Cog-Swap. And Voila!!! Cog-Swap will load!
Here's how to use Cog-Swap:
CD-ROM:
1) Swap the uLaunchELF disc with your backup when the Cog-Swap screen loads with a blue disc and the writing "PS2 CD-ROM" or similar underneath.
DVD-ROM:
1) Remove the piece you have put over the front lid sensor of your PlayStation 2. The piece should be over this thing:
2) Insert a high TOC ORIGINAL DVD-ROM game(one that has a silver base) whose size is over 4GB(you have to check on your computer, and you CANNOT use a Dual Layer DVD-ROM game, which are those that are over 4.37GB).
3) Place the piece you removed from the lid sensor shown earlier back where it was.
4) Keep an eye on your screen until a yellow disc shows on the screen with "PS2 DVD-ROM" or something like that under it.
5) Once you see the yellow disc with "PS2 DVD-ROM" or similar, press X on your controller. The disc will spin again(it stops when the screen shows the yellow disc). When the disc spins, keep your eyes on your TV screen until you see the yellow disc turn purple and "PS2 DVD-ROM" or similar kind of writing change to "Use Cogswap".
6) When that change happens, swap your original with your backup.

Well, I don't use CDLoader exactly so I believed this messes up this process a little. I downloaded something called "AR Max Evo Swap Magic Edition" which to my understanding is a combination of the CDLoader program and AR Max Evo. Somehow they built so that you are able to load that burned program with SM and then after using the AR Max Evo thats built in to activate cheats, CDLoader starts and then you put in your SM again (I guess in order to reload that data that's at the beginning of real PS2 games) and press "x". After that it'll say swap dvd using EA method. At that point I just change discs and they usually start. This is where the problem lies. Star Ocean will not do this, even without cheats. Therefore I was looking to your guide to see if there is any possible way "to trigger" a cheat device program to activate by some other method besides inserting either of Swap Magic discs first. I know that the fat PS2's were able to exploit that "Title" or PS1 SLUS thingy. With the slim-lines you have to make the exploit as a Live CD correct? Would it then be possible to install the exploit to a Mem Card my iPod and then insert a real or burned PS1 or PS2 game to trigger the .elf to load. In a nutshell I need a way to launch an .elf without using SM first. Is it possible?

I understand now. The thing is though, instead of using CD Loader to boot Star Ocean, you should really try booting the Cogswap CD after cdloader. I will make you an ISO if you wish for the cogswap cd.
When you get to the cdloader part this is what you would do: Press triangle to retract the laser, insert the swap magic CD that's right SWAP MAGIC CD not dvd, press triangle and it will scan the CD it wont start it just detect a PS2 CD (NOTE you do NOT need to press X like with dvds just have it scan by pressing triangle to put laser back it and it will say PS2 Cd), then do a hidden swap and insert the ULE/cogswap CD and press X to load and follow the instructions from there.
Good luck!
I can build you A ULE cd with the cogswap elf saved on it, you won't even need to use your ipod it will have everything on the CD then you just use the method i explained above to boot it.

I would greatly appreciate it if you think you could spare any of your time to help me out by building that CD of yours. I've been at this for almost a week straight and really could use small victory right about now.

I wasn't sure whether or not you had an NTSC or PAL system so I compiled ULE/COGSWAP CDs for both.
NTSC: http://www.mediafire.com/?fhzt2w4sgen
PAL: http://www.mediafire.com/?6ynhw5yujmu
1) When CDLoader loads up, press triangle to retract the laser, then swap your ARMAX/Cdloader CD for any real ps2 CD (the swap magic CD can be used) and press triangle to scan the CD again. It will say PS2 cd in the bottom right hand corner. Unlike the DVD method, you DO NOT have to press X again for CDs, just use triangle to bring the laser back and scan it. Now do an undetected swap, insert the ULE/cogswap CD and press x to load.
2) You should now be at the ULaunchElf main menu. Press select to go into options. You should see a bunch of buttons displayed on the screen, go down to the one you want and press O to select. Now go to cdfs and press O, then go down to BADATA/BEDATA and press O, then go to COGSWAP.ELF and select it with O. Return back to the main menu and use the key you assigned cogswap to to boot it.
Using Cogswap
------------------
1) Remove the sensor from over the power bar.
2) Insert a high TOC game and replace the sensor.
3) It will scan your high TOC game.
4) Press X. It will scan it again and say to swap disks.
5) This time do a hidden swap and insert star ocean.
6) Play!
In theory this should work. However I just thought of something troubling...
You have played Star Ocean normally with Swap Magic, right? I'm saying this because I know it's a 2CD game, and sometimes multiple CD games won't work because they will try and scan for which CD it is, but they won't be scanning a real CD so it won't work. I really recommend trying it first with Swap Magic alone just to make sure it works. This is what happened with my backup of FFVII which has 3 discs, it would scan for what disc # it was so it wouldn't work.
Or maybe Star Ocean is 1 disc and for some reason I remember it being 2. Who knows >_>

Yes, the game works perfectly if I just load my SM DVD and then press load program when the Star Ocean backup is in. Well, let's hope this works. One more question before I get straight to it... What exactly is a hidden swap?

Regular swap: Remove the magic key that is above the power sensor so it will be like you are opening the top normally and putting in a new game
Hidden swap: keep all the magic keys in so the PS2 will not detect you opened lid
Best of luck.

Have you gotten it to say "Use cogswap?" That is when you do an undetected swap for your backup.

It sounds like it is getting detected. Make sure you have the two sensors and the disc breaker blocked off, I think it might be unscanning the disc when you go to swap.

The caveat of this whole thing is I'd have to buy the action replay or similar program. I have SM, and I'm contempt so I guess I'm fine.

***FOR SWAP MAGIC USERS ONLY****
If you have a USBPendrive, and Swap Magic, u can load .elf files directly just by using Swap Magic, provided there is no anti-USB protection on your PS2.
I went to the website and used these instructions, and you don't need to do a whole bunch of swapping.
Booting import/backup games:
1. Boot PS2 with Swap Magic (use CD or DVD version#)
2. When the title screen appears (you will see 2 options, Load Program and Video Mode on
the screen), you can start to use the flip top cover or slide-tool** to swap the discs with
your import/backup.
3. Press X on the joy pad and the game will start
#If your import/backup is CD, please insert Swap Magic CD ver., vice versa.
**For more information about the operation of flip top cover and slide-tool, please visit http://www.swapmagic3.com
Multiple elf method:
Store multiple programs in the USB Mass Storage Devices:
1. You can put maximum 4 files in the SWAPMAGIC folder at the same time. But, you need
to rename those programs to SMBOOT0.ELF, SMBOOT1.ELF, SMBOOT2.ELF and
SMBOOT3.ELF respectively.
2. Plug-in the USB Mass Storage Device to the USB port of the PS2, and then boot your PS2
with SwapMagic3.6.
3. When the title screen appears (you will see 2 options Load Program and Video Mode on
the screen), you can press:
A. "UP+L1" buttons to load SMBOOT0.ELF
B. "UP+L2" buttons to load SMBOOT1.ELF
C. "UP+R1" buttons to load SMBOOT2.ELF
D. "UP+R2" buttons to load SMBOOT3.ELF
I used to own a Fat PS2 with the official 40GB HD in it. I pawned it and it got stolen from the pawn shop (what luck huh). So I got a slim PS2 in place of it, and the owner reimbursed me for having to buy swap magic 3.6.
The thing is Swap Magic and Cogswap work slightly different.
I had problems with games not loading correctly, like R-Type Final, which would hang at the title screen. However, using Cogswap it loads the copy game correctly...why I don't know, but I have trsted it and Cogswap works a lot better on some games, than swap magic, and vice versa.
But really, if your just looking to swap, and u have Swap magic and a usb drive, this method is flawless and simple. I might even post a vid on youtube.
good to go!!

oops I meant to put this at the beginning of my post...sorry folks.
and if this is old news, then it's new news to me.
Loading your own programs from USB Mass Storage Devices:
1. Rename your program to SWAPMAGIC.ELF
2. Create a folder named SWAPMAGIC in the root directory of your USB Mass Storage
Devices and then put the SWAPMAGIC.ELF file in the folder.
3. Plug-in the USB Mass Storage Device to the USB port of the PS2. And then boot your PS2
with SwapMagic3.6. If the program (SWAPMAGIC.ELF) is found in "../SWAPMAGIC/", it
will be launched automatically.
good to go!!

didn't say it wqas, I just wanted to use cogswap. Nothing more. But since I just added the launch.elf file to the SWAPMAGICfolder on my USBpen drive, I was able to run all the apps I had by assigning buttons like I did when I ran the MC exploit on my FAT PS2.
After all, it's your method, I just found away to do it without making CD's and using AR MAX.
I tried to AR MAX method, but my wersion of AR MAX is a newer version, and would not read the elf files from the pendrive, just said no media found. And sometimes some of my back-ups act funny when using SM 3.6, so I wanted to use cogswap..which runs most of my games flawlessy. Also, I can use my NeoGeo CD emulator to play my 1:1 NGCD backups.
So in toher words, thanks, you deserve all the credit.
good to go!!
