How do u make BitTorrent download faster? i have been searching the answer for days.

thanks redscorp...problem is i used to set at 26kb/s and got speeds of 50 plus...now there is something terribly wrong that i do not know what it is...
my up speed according to that site is only 89 which is miserable cause if i follow the steps i should limit to 8 kb/s only?

oh by the way, in the end i was so fed up with firewall and all that that i uninstalled my Zone Alarm and disabled Win XP one too but yet speeds remain below 10kb/s....even with green light all the time! My upload speed also seems affected (it's below 10kb/s too most of the time despite setting max upload to 23)
Help! i am getting very desperate...
Toiletman suggested: "If you're using a low port number such as 6881 for BT downloads, then chances are your ISP has blocked it. Use a higher port number such as 53000. "
I tried changing that to 53000 from 6881 in Azureus but it did not make a difference

In BitLord under the connections menu there is something called Listen Port. The port number listed there, do I need to go open up just like I opened up 6881? I have a very fast cable connection but my spped only avg around 30Kb/s. I'm connected to 6 seeders, and 74 peers. Thanks for any help.

I just changed my connection on my modem. I used to use a USB cable to connect to the pc but now i have changed to using ethernet cabling instead. When i load Azureus up i dont get any green lights, instead i get all yellow.
What do i have to do to have this fixed. Also i will be buying a wireless router soon, this is the reason for the change of cabling.
Someone please help me

leogeo, maybe u changed something in the Azureus options you shouldn't have and it's making ur dl speed slow. try unistalling Azureus and installing it again. u can also try a different program other than Azureus, like bitcomet. i used Azureus for a long time and than i tried bitcomet. in my opinion bitcomet is better. one reaoson is because Azureus can take a very long time doing Hash Checks, especially for large files. Hash Check is that checking it does to downloads when u improperly shutdown Azureus. bitcomet doesnt do that, or if it does it's really fast.
dmarcel, if u opened up 6881 just change that number listed there in bitlord (Listen Port) to 6881. and that's it. the bottom line is this: the port u open is the port u should have in the Listen Port option.
ocm, if u getting a yellow light, again, that means that u are going to have to forward the port so u can accept incoming connections or whatever. then u should get green light. when u get the new router, u are going to have to know how to get to it's settings so u can forward ports.
im not sure about this, but i think that to get to ur router settings (for any router) u type the Modem IP address in a web browser. If u can find or know ur modem ip, lol. Or u can go to: Start, Run, type "command", hit OK, on the DOS window that appears type "ipconfig" and hit enter. u gonna get a list of shit. note the number to the right of the line that says "Default Gateway". type that in a web browser and see if that takes u to the modem or router settings.

Hi there im new here and i have some problems to share about my bit tornado. I'm currently on a 6500Kbps(bits i think) and and upload of 128/256 ( not sure) and i used to use cable/fast and get downloads above 60-70 and regularly 80+ but now i seem to only receive 25-35 and it is funny since the files i downloaded had a same amount of seeders like an old one but less peers. I have a green light and im not running on any kind of router. My ports are 6881-6999 and my max upload speed and all are default from cable/slow since someone recommended it would be faster :P

Here is my setup....
I'm using Azureus on a Cable LAN connection with 3Meg service.
Azureus listening port: 53000 (yes, one port only)
Linksys router: port forwarding 53000
Windows XP with Service Pack 2
Exception for port 53000 through Windows XP Firewall
PeerGuardian 2
Based on speed tesing:
23KB/s global max upload speed
248KB/s global max download speed
Downloading with a registered tracker.
Torrents downloading have approx. 2:1 seeder/leecher ratio.
Average download speed: 120kB/s total (downloading 4 torrents at once)
Okay, here is the deal. I know i'm getting much better speed than alot of people. But i'm downloading very large files GB+, so I want to get all the performance I can. What else can I do to improve my speed? I saw mention of port triggering earlier in this thread. Can anyone explain what that is to me, and tell me if it's a good idea? I'm open to any suggestions, please, help me out!

now im using Azureus and i put 30 max upload cos i have like 128/256 no idea which upload rate... and for Azureus, is it normal for the download to go up and down for the first few minutes? like 10kb/s to 1kb/s to 16kb/s to 4kb/s and all? and btw is port 52252 alright? i have no router btw and no firewall

I've been using Azureus 2.2.0.2 for a while now. Recently, I've been getting yellow smilies on a number of torrents, whereas another torrent which I was downloading was a green smiley. The tracker I'm using is http://tracker.prq.to/announce. I've downloaded a number of torrents which use this tracker, they all have yellow smileys. The torrent that has a green smiley uses a different tracker. I was originally using port 6881, but then reconfigured for port 50000. These are TCP ports. Azureus is set to UPnP the ports. The torrents are still yellow. The torrent that was green, is still green. When I'm downloading on the yellow torrents I get speeds between 0KBps and 16Kbps. I'm using ADSL with a Speedtouch 330 modem. Download speed is 1.1Mbps and Upload speed is 160Kbps. Download bandwidth throttle is set to Unlimited and the upload bandwidth throttle is set to 16KBps (80% of 160Kbps). I'm using ICS with WinXP Pro. Both computer (the server and the client) are running WinXP Pro. The client uses SP2 and the server uses SP1. Server uses Norton Internet Security 2004 Professional Client uses McAfee Internet Security 2005 WinXP firewall is disabled on both computers. The computer that is downloading does not have the modem attached to it. As I said before Azureus has UPnP'd the ports to the ICS server. Also I have manually forwarded the ports 6881-6889 to the client (i.e. my computer).
When I completed download of the green smiley torrent (and began seeding it), it still had the green smiley and has continued to. The other torrents (which are using http://tracker.prq.to/announce), still have the yellow smiley. Is the problem likely to be with the tracker in this case? Is there any way that I can get a green smiley on those torrents? Note that the torrents on http://tracker.prq.to/announce are still yellow, even with port 50000 (which is just only port I'm using for Azureus).
I don't think that my ISP has throttled ports 6881-6889 because when I was downloading the green smiley torrent, I was getting speeds between 30 and 50KBps (at that time [which was about 2 weeks ago] I was on ADSL with 576Kbps download and 160Kbps upload). Please note that on the yellow smiley torrents, I get uploads of about 3KBps. But sometimes no download.
When I was using port 6881, I did the Shields Up port test on the range 6881-6889. Port 6881 was open, and the rest were stealthed even with port forwarding on. I then disabled McAfee, and did the test again ports 6881 was open and the rest were closed. I then manually opened the ports in McAfee, but I got the stealthed thing again. When I used the BTFaq NAT test, using port 6881, I got failed. That's even with port forwarding, Azureus open, and McAfee disabled.
I then did the test again using Port 50000 on Shields Up. It shows up as being open. When I did the test using the BTFaq NAT test, port 50000 fails as well. It still fails with McAfee Internet Security Firewall disabled. When I look at the traffic going out on my firewall, I see that alot of the traffic is going out on random ports and some traffic is coming in on random ports. It shows that Azureus is listening on 6880 and 50000.
At the moment, I don't know what to do about this problem. I've tried alot of solutions, but none of them seem to work.

I've a problem with forwarding ports on my Prolink Hurricane 9000G Router. Although I've specified under "Virtual Server Configuration".

Port Type: TCP
My IP address
Private Port: 6881
I'm still getting slow downloads, and I'm not sure how to configure the firewall on my router. Can someone explain how to do so?

To reply to the majority of Bittorrent Speed concern, there is a solution all of your problems.
1) Broadband Internet Connection or higher
2) Forward ports or disable ALL Firewalls (Check the guides)
3) Choose a port number out of the normal range i.e (6881-6999) I suggest 13160 and above
Here's where the procedure gets finnicky.
4) Download all available Client for Bittorents; BitLord, Azureus, ABC etc.
Note: Some Trackers block the protocol of particular Bit Clients, so Having all the available clients should make sense to the more discerning.
5) Only D/L torrents with a high frequence of seeds (or generous ones)
6) BE PATIENT! Majority of the time, You may only be connected to seeds once you have downloaded a certain percentage of whatever it is you download. Hence, with smaller downloads such as music, d/ling a bigger percentage enables you to download quicker and to upload to more sources, compared to big Downloads ( >2GB ) it may take a day to download 5 %.
If then, you have followed this guide and beg the question "Why do I see people download at 100KB/s + when I've downloaded a bigger percentage?" it can be answered with "Go back and check the procedure, or, T1. There are people out there with T1 you know."

humbleone im not sure what u are saying exactly but if what u are saying is that the more u are into a download (that is, the greater the percentage) the faster u'll download, then i dont necessary believe it. i dont believe it because more often than not, i start hitting over 100KBs just seconds after beginning the download. and i have DSL. and i finish 2 gig files in around 10 hours. but i do agree with all ur other suggestions, especially that changing-between-clients thing.
by the way, what is T1? how fast is it?

Redscorpi, T1 is a fiber-optic internet connection (or it can be a copper wire connection), with an upload and download speed of 1.5Mbps. Basically it's a form of broadband.

Part 6 of the solution is very subjective indeed, though it has been my experience. This may only apply to some people, but it does happen. If I D/L a torrent >2GB It usually takes me 5 hours to get going, then its 100+KB/s with a broadband connection. I guess I should have made the edit which indicated this may not be with every case of Bittorrent speed concern.
If all else fails, then to those with speed issues, give part 6 a try, in the meantime, give it a miss.

well Nazgul, although i did enjoy the long read, lol, i couldn't think of a straight solution for your problem. but i can comment on a few things. I don't think having the yellow smiley has anything to do with the tracker. if u forwarded the port being used by the BT client and got CLOSED or OPEN on the Shields Up test, u should get green smiley. i think thats all u need to get green smileys. do a shields up test again with the port being used by Azureus and make sure u get CLOSED or OPEN.
On the NAT test type-in, where pompted, the HashID belonging to the torrent so u dont get failed. if u did type the hash ID and still get failed than there may be a problem with ur connection to tracker.
thanks for letting me know what a T1 is. hey, its not that fast. i get 1.3Mbps download on bandwidth tests with bellsouth dsl, so its kinda close. roadrunner cable says its 3 times as fast as dsl. man i wish i had roadrunner!

Hey redscorpi, I see that you have quite a bit of experience with this bittorrent type stuff. So... I was wondering if you could help me out here. I haven't yet figured out how to open the ports on my computer yet. I use a Mac with the OS X system and I need a lot of help with my download speed. I'm only downloading at about 1 kb/s or less. I don't what exactly happened to my download speed, but it has been reduced to this pitiful speed. I'm not sure if you have had experience with OS X, but could you help me out a little here?

Hmm... I should probably tell you what my bittorrent client is... Well, I had gotten mine off of BitTornado.com. I am about to try a newer version than the one I just had. I had the 3.4.2 version. I will be back to tell you if it helped out a little or not.

actually i've never had any experience at all with Macs or X OS or whatever. I couldn't tell you if what you have to do requires different steps. I would not think it's different because what you are going to have to deal with is your router (if you have any), modem, firewalls, which, i think, have nothing to do with your Operating System or computer type.
so what u and i need to know is: how are you connected to the internet? does your phone jack cable go directly to your computer or does it go to some other device?

Hmm... Let's see here... I use dsl to connect to the internet. It uses a small Westell modem. The phone service I use is Bellsouth. Hopefully that will help you. In the meantime, I'm gonna try to figure out how this Python system works. I've gotten stuck in the middle of this persons directions on this page. http://forums.degreez.net/viewtopic.php?t=4332

oh man, and i thought you were gonna make me think. thats the exact same stuff i got. go here, i explain how to do everything for the westell modem. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/89259 it's only the first page of this very same thread. its about the 7th or 8th response to this thread where i explain how to forward ports on westell modem.
After you do this, make sure ur BT client is using the same Listen Ports. to do this go to BitTornado (assuming thats the BT client u said u were using) and click on "Pref", look at the right-hand corner (i think) and it should say something like "Listen Port Range" or some shit like that. Here u should have the option of entering any port range u want. Guess what u gonna do. thats right! enter the same port range u forwarded earlier, which is 6881 to 6883.
after that u should get a green light and way faster download speeds than 1KBs (assuming there is not difference in have a Mac or PC lol)

another thing, if u want to get even faster speeds, u gonna have to learn how to set the "Max Upload Rate" option in ur BT client to the right amount. i also said how to do this in this thread. It's in page 13, first post: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/13/89259
