i think most/all NEC drives can't nooktype by default as their firmware doesn't support it (shame on you NEC) in which case you need third party firmware. i've posted on this quite a bit...
Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

No that's made in Taiwan Sony Branded Media. Sony's aren't gaurunteed to be Taiyo Yudens. The Sony DVD+R's made in Japan are gaurunteed to be TY's. Aside from that, you can go by the octogonal spacer (piece of strofoam on top of spindle) on top of the 50 spindles. The octogonal spacer means Taiyo Yuden. If the spacer is circular, it's Sony media. You should be fine ordering any of the brands I linked you to.

Do these seem to be legit dvd-rs?
http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/allmedia/prodDetail.do?kitNbr=1303&...
Dont ask how you think I would know how you would be able to tell if these are real or not, I figured someone with experience might be able to tell... Besides, they must be better than what I have now-memorex- sorry- memosux- since it seems that everyone here hates them!
Should I get 4x instead of 8x? I have a version 3 ps2...

There's already links to sites that have good deals on legit TY's and Verb's on this page. Anything outside of that constitutes "buyer beware."

Great. Creaky why do you not ban people like him? These noobs are driving all the senior members and AD addicts way. How often do you see Alkohol, Hursty, Steimy, KC36330, myself, and other knowlegeable people post here anymore? It's getting ridiculous. I know AD's forums are massive, but please weed out some of these useless posters, before all the knowledgeable people leave for other sites. Thank you.

The booktyping method works for all burners, if your burner supports booktyping/bitsetting with its official firmware. You should always use quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. I have a Matrix infinity and I've burned 180+ games to TY 8x DVD-R's/TY 8x DVD+R's with 0 coasters.
86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm
106. Q. Where I can find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji, Sony, and Maxell have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no gauruntee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com

Lol, yeah I get tired of editing that thing. There's a certain level of tolerance for minor errors one must have when they write a 10,000 word, 110 question FAQ. I'll edit that one.
