MCC02RG20, MCC003 = This was faked starting in mid 2005, again by InfoSmart of Hong Kong.
Damn, now I'm a little worried about these Comstars.

I found a couple of Memorex in my desk this morning, so I got their ID. Turns out they're RICOHJPNR03, 2nd class. I remember buying these at Best Buy. When I bought my Comstars, I also bought a 100 pack of Memorex +R, thinking I was getting RICOHJPNR03. But what I got was CMC M01. I'm thinking that Futureshop and Best Buy, even though they're practically identical (FS being BB's Canadian equivilant), Futureshop gets different media codes?

Oh well, as long as they work in my stand alone Recorder, and can be used to backup my movies, I'm not to concerned. Will order some Taiyo Yudens next payday for my PS2.

Some of those are still floating around, but you'll be able to tell from the quality scores if they're fakes or not. I doubt they are.

93. Q. How can I tell if my burned disc is of good quality?
A. Well besides you using quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's, you can use a program called Nero CD/DVD Speed to measure the quality of your discs. It measures POF, PIF and gives your disc a quality score based largely on it's prerecorded Media ID. In my experience that's the key component to getting a good quality score. A crap manufacturer like CMC Mag won't maintain a great quality score over time, even if you follow all the advice given on AD for successful burning. You don't need to know exactly what PIF's and POF's are, just know the more of them, the more likely your disc will skip, lag, freeze, or not boot at all. When people say CMC Mag or Memorex media is crap, that info is based largely on many Nero CD/DVD Speed scans by burn enthusiasts on CMC Mag media that have yielded terrible quality scores. Try it yourself and see. You can find Nero CD/DVD Speed here: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html Plextor DVD Burners aren't compatible with Nero CD/DVD Speed. For their DVD Burners you need to use a program called Plextools, which does about the same thing as Nero CD/DVD Speed minus the quality score. You can find Plextools here: http://www.plextools.com/download/download.asp
DVDInfoPro is a popular alternative to CD/DVD Speed: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
K-probe is a scanner specifically for Liteon Burners: http://www.cdrlabs.com/kprobe/

Yep, definitely fakes. Ran Nero CD/DVD Drive Speed. Started out at 71, and just went down hill. Definitely not using these for my PS2. Movies and Data backup only. If these weren't on sale, I'd be pretty pissed off, lol. But $40 for 200 blank discs, I'm not complaining.

Here's a good way to verify it they're fakes. Check the coding on the inner hub.

From Doc TY, the Media guru who taught me most of what I know about media:
Quote:
for real MCC003s...on the inner hub (where the TY coding is near the center) look for the following:

ZD3596-DVR-X47B

mainly look for the "ZD" or a "ZC" at the beginning...this holds true for the MCC003s that i have under the Verbatim brand as well as others...

Damn! I just found this thread and my game backups were burned on Memorex (CMCMAG) DVD-R! Ewwwww! No wonder my laser failed in less than 3 months. Luckily I found this thread before my system came back. I put in orders for 100 TYG02's and 100 MXL-RG03's. Is there an edge between those two or are they identical in quality.

After some serious eye straining, this is what I found out...

ZC7158-DVR-X47A

So, these are safe to use in my PS2? I hope these are genuine MCC003s. At $40/200 pack, I'll be stocking up, lol.

Yeah it could be the first one was a bad burn. Is your firmware up to date? Is your burner in DMA Mode?

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatibility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

82. Q. When I'm burning with DVD Decrypter or Nero I get an I/O error or some other strange error, I'm not sure my burner is in DMA mode, and I'm confused about different media, what do I do?

Just 1 thing I don't understand. If a manufacturer is faking another brand, why don't they fake the ID code as well? Don't they get total control over what the ID code is when they make the disc?

I have a cheap as heck spindle of 50 Hyundai DVD-Rs... oddly enough I have had 100% success with them. I ran Nero's quality thing and it said 95% which is what Taiyo Yuden was scoring for people in the middle of this thread. It also had a very low PI (i think thats what it was called) failure. Then I looked at what Nero claimed the media was, and it said INFODISC, a second class media!

Is Nero lying? What the?

even low quality disks can give high PIE/PIF quality scores shortly after burning but they do tend to drop in quality very quickly. scan a few that are 6 months to a year old and see if you still have a 95% quality.

The digitalfaq media link isn't very accurate with some things. It's got TDK as top notch media, and optodisc and infodisc as second tier media, which is just not accurate. TDK is above average, but not top tier, infodisc and optodisc are landfill material.

That makes more sense then.

Im experimenting with different DVDs available at a store near me and I got one today by Verbatim but it says MCC when I scan it... is MCC ever okay or is it just plain bad?

Sorry for double post, couldnt figure out how to edit.

The last post was a mistake, my new disc was MCC, my old was CMC, I got the two mixed up.

It worked great though, and on Dragon Quest 8 which had the aforementioned spastic load times on my other discs. And I didnt even remove the dummy file. Hurruah!

Good deal. Quality media makes all the difference. There's a huge difference between CMC and MCC.

there's a huge difference in loading times if you remove the dummy files from the disk. if you removed then originally that might have been the entire problem.

I did remove it, and tried it without it on my crappy discs and they came out working worse than the crappy disc I burned without removing it... so I decided to use the good media with the file in place. The game has faster loading times than my legit Final Fantasy X so thats good enough for me.

dummy files are used to push data further out on the disk, the further it's pushed out the faster it can be read because surface area is traveling faster the farther out on the disk you go.

Oh I had it backwards again then... so why were people saying to remove them for Dragon Quest 8? I'm using Swap Magic, with the files still there and its all working...

So confusing =D

Swap Magic will not boot an image over 4.3 gig in size so allot of games require rebuilding to get them smaller then that threshold so they'll boot ONLY for Swap Magic. it still causes lagging on loading of the game, but it's the only way it'll work with Swap Magic.
