Since "Made in Japan" 8X Fujifilm, Sony, and Verbatim media are authentic Taiyo Yuden, what's best between these DVDs?
1)Sony DVD+R Made in Japan
2)Fujifilm DVD+R Made in Japan
3)Verbatim LightScribe DVD+R Made in Japan
4)Vakoss DVD+R(have no idea where they're made, and they're not a very known brand)
5)Maxell DVD+R Made in Japan
I'm going to make two DVD backups soon, so information on what's the best DVD brand to burn these backups would really be appreciated.

The Sony and Fuji media that code out as Yuden000T02 (8x DVD+R's) are identical. So is the media that codes out as TYG02 (8x DVD-R's). There are also Verb TY's (not avaliable in US) and Panasonic TY's. The ones made by Taiyo Yuden are identical, just with different brands on the label. The LightScribe Verb's are compatible with LS drives. Avoid the 16x Verb's, several people have reported issues with them and PS2 backups. Pick some 4x or 8x Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media.

I think I remember reading somewhere on this site about checking the quality of a disc you've burned... How do I do that?

93. Q. How can I tell if my burned disc is of good quality?
A. Well besides you using quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's, you can use a program called Nero CD/DVD Speed to measure the quality of your discs. It measures POF, PIF and gives your disc a quality score based largely on it's prerecorded Media ID. In my experience that's the key component to getting a good quality score. A crap manufacturer like CMC Mag won't maintain a great quality score over time, even if you follow all the advice given on AD for successful burning. You don't need to know exactly what PIF's and POF's are, just know the more of them, the more likely your disc will skip, lag, freeze, or not boot at all. When people say CMC Mag or Memorex media is crap, that info is based largely on many Nero CD/DVD Speed scans by burn enthusiasts on CMC Mag media that have yielded terrible quality scores. Try it yourself and see. You can find Nero CD/DVD Speed here: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html Plextor DVD Burners aren't compatible with Nero CD/DVD Speed. For their DVD Burners you need to use a program called Plextools, which does about the same thing as Nero CD/DVD Speed minus the quality score. You can find Plextools here: http://www.plextools.com/download/download.asp DVDInfoPro is a popular alternative to CD/DVD Speed: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ K-probe is a scanner specifically for Liteon Burners: http://www.cdrlabs.com/kprobe/

Those are Taiyo Yudens. I recently switched to those instead of TY DVD-R's. They are very very good.

Those discs are made by Taiyo Yuden GregI. Sony pays Taiyo Yuden to make them, then slaps their label on them. They are Sony's in name only. When you try to talk smack, you merely show your own ignorance. The day you can teach me anything about the PS2, I'll know I have truly lost all my brain cells.

Yes I know the discs say accucore on them, but the Taiyo Yuden manufactured Sony's don't employ the accucore, only the ones with the Sony0xxx media code do. I.E. The media Sony actually manufactures. The Taiyo Yuden manufactured Sony's use azo dyes similar to Verb's. Again you have no point, another useless post. FYI you can also pick Taiyo Yudens under Fuji, Maxell, TDK, and Verbatim brand names. Fuji and Sony are the most common nowadays, Maxell and TDK are rare to find anymore, and the Verb TY's are only available outside of the US. If you're so confident about the Sony Media, post some Nero CD/DVD Speed scores. I'll put some of my Taiyo Yuden scores up against them. Let's see who wins.

Tokijin, are you 100% sure that a 50-pack of "Made in Japan" Sony DVD+Rs with the octagonal spacer are generic Taiyos? May I see a picture of the top of a Taiyo Yuden pack of DVDs so I can REALLY tell if my Sonys are true Taiyo? I bought them just because of what you said.

I haven't been able to confirm that 100%. I heard from a reliable source that the Sony 8x DVD-R's that're TYG02 and MIJ have the octogonal spacer on top. That is for newer batches of TYG02, the old ones have ciruclar spacers. I can confirm that, I've bought several batches of the Yuden000T02 of late. They all had circular spacers. The same is true for older TYG02. Wal-Mart got a new shipment of Sony DVD-R's in, several of the 50 spindles were made in Japan, but they all had circular spacers on top. I believe they would code as TYG02, but I'm not 100% on that. Sony DVD+R's MIJ will always be Taiyo Yudens. I've never seen or heard otherwise. So if you're uncertain, and you don't want Sony MIT media, just get Sony branded 8x DVD+R's made in Japan. They are guarunteed to code out as Yuden000T02.
