it's called a "memory card exploit". use the search feature, in this forum, and you'll find answers. search for MC exploit, trigger disc, and various other stuff will be available to you. i suggest that you read about what you need, then get your equipment together. my method of exploitation was using the codebreaker 8.1 (or above) and a usb drive. also check out http://www.exploitstation.com and http://www.ps2hd.com

Sorry I should probally post this in another forum, but I've been following this one, trying to make a mem exploit, and it seems to be filled w/ knowledgeable people.
Somehow I managed to screw up my Hard Drive full of games, I made a rookie mistake and ran HD loader non patched (eg <127 gig) on a drive that I had succesfully been installing games over 127 gigs.
Now both versions tell me harddrive error. Something got written to the drive when I put the older hd loader in, how can I fix this? Am I screwed?
For reference, the old version I used (that messed up drive)is an orginal HD loader retail disc. The patched dics I was running prior I found online, it's boot up pic was a final fantasy girl and koren text, was being used in conjunction with magic swap 3.6 & a slide card, it recongized over 127 gigs and was working great... I shouldn't have messed w/ it. but I got lazy and sick of slide trick (y I had been looking here)
Anybody kno anyway I can get my games back from the drive? Would I need to connect to a PC to fix this? Should I just start again? I got another drive to test with (even bigger!) but installing the games again will be a pain in the ass.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Ali

yeah this post is prob'ly in the wrong spot. if you've got a bigger drive to test it on, then that is good. hooking up your old one to transfer games wont be as bad as you think. just make sure you format the Bigger one first with whatever method. then hook them both up to the pc and run Winhiip 1.7.X to copy files from one drive to the next. if it's 30+ games , then it may take a couple of hrs.

Ok, I've been trying some stuff with this for a while now, and I can't figure out whether I can even get it to work or not.
If I use Gameshark 2, will that allow me to load the CDR with the exploit on it? I don't have a modded ps2, so I was wondering if Gameshark would be enough.
I know you guys get lots of dumb people like me asking the same supid questions, but I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

Hi all,
Just want to say thanks so much to everyone who's posted on this thread coz it's really appreciated.
Been trying to sort out a MC exploit using hdld_server.elf which I've renamed boot.elf. I've been trying to trigger from the PS1 disks Time Crisis and Tony Hawks thingy. I've created the title.db with the disk id's i got from opening the system file in notepad.
Basically what I have found is my ps2 won't boot up the ps1 disk first time - it goes to the screen with the memory card and the disk selector. I select the disk several times and it eventually loads.
The result is 1 of 2: 1 - Using BOOT.ELF the game just loads normally, or 2 - using boot.elf, I get a complete red screen and ps2 locks up.
has anyone else had this problem when trying mc exploits? Is it an issue that if it doesn't load up first time from the ps1 disk it won't work? Kinda stuck now and was sooooooo close!
Cheers for any help in advance :)

what i say that you do, is use launchelf as your boot.elf file. then you can load any other elf file you want at your leisure. OR you can set the hdlserver file as your default, which will have that file to run automatically. it's fun and easy. go give it a shot.
you might be able to just readjust your files, and change the hdlserver from boot elf and rename launchelf as your boot elf and go from there. but if that doesnt work, just redo your exploit. personally i'd go with the second one to MAKE SURE.

OK, I'm trying to get the MC exploit to work...I opted to get a USB-PS2 memory card adapter, rather than a modchip/swapmagic/etc. The thing works fine, I can download and upload saves to the memory card, but I thought there'd be some option to copy files over. How can I get my .elf, title.db etc. on the memory card? Is there some way to use the "edit game" feature to add these files in the right place? Has anybody used this method successfully? I sunk some money into this adapter and a new memory card, so hopefully somebody can help me out!

Hey kingscott check out the program PS2savebuilder off of http://www.ps2savetools.com ,you will have to build an exploit save with this program then transfer it to your memcard.I'm not sure, but there is a guide on the pen drive method on here somewhere.Oh it is on page 2 of this thread, guide by iMNeW using a USB adapter and Action Replay. You can skip some parts, was just wondering are you using the EMS adapter for the PS2.Hope this helps you out,not sure if I can explain it any better than what iMNeW already mentioned though when building the exploit.

Hey kenflip the GameShark2v2 can be used to install the independence exploit, jonjakjam cleared it up on one of these pages. You will have to use a slidecard/fliptop technique in order for it to work though. It is to trick the PS2 into thinking the tray hasn't been ejected.Good Luck and hope it works out, haven't really been keeping up with this thread like I should but there is alot of help on here on this issue which is a good sign. The memory card exploits are the shiznit if you ask me,the more people use them the better they get.

Thanks L-Burna! That's very helpful...the one problem I'm having now is that the USB/PS2 adapter software wants a file format of .psu or .psd and PS2 Save Builder doesn't seem to support this format (unless one of the formats is the same thing with a different extension name?). So I guess I need to find a way to convert the files....I'm working on it now, I'll let you know if I have any luck. If anybody has more suggestions please let me know!

Sorry for all the contiguous replies, but the good news is I got it to work! I successfully installed PGEN on my MC. If anybody is interested I can describe exactly how I did it...now I'm wondering, is there anyway to boot a CD-ROM using the MC exploit (ie without using the "knife trick" or swap magic)? Specifically, I'd like to be able to load ROMS from a CD when running PGEN (since space on the MC is limited), but in order to do that I have to get my ROMS disk to boot. It looks like CDLoader/Cogswaploader/etc. won't do what I want to do. Thanks!

kingsott: i havent been keeping up with your posts, but the last one suggest to me that you either dont have a HDD or you have a PStwo. you really should get a HDD for your PS2. they're convenient to have.

OK I bought the new Game Shark 5.3, I can't do the swap trick but it does have a memory card manager that reads directly from a usb thumb drive. The problem is when using ps2 savebuilder it only creates saves for action replay and other devices. Games Shark doesn't crush/uncrush like Action Replay it seems to just copy directly off the usb drive, so is there a way I can create a "Your SystemConfiguration" file in raw ps2 format?????????????

OK...just got this to work. Is Cogswap the only ELF installed to run backups? CD loader seems like it might be just for PAL games? Could someone could give me an idea of what the default ELFs are used for (mcloader, ps2link, cdloader, etc).

Ok I have recently got two "retail" copies of HD loader, is there anyway I can patch this version to use more than 127 gigs? I want to use them with a 200 gig drive. Also is there any easy way to make a memory card exploit with this software, or possible use a mem card or usb drive to patch the software past 127 gigs.
Thanks.

search on www.exploitstation.com for the codebreaker method. that is by far the easiest way to do a memory card exploit on your system. do the exploit, and save the latest already fully patched hdloader file to your MC and you wont have to worry about anything else.

I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this. It has been a while since my last post.
You can copy your mem card exploit from one mem card to another using the browser built into the PS2 just copy the system file from one card to the other and you are done. It's that easy.

Make sure your Disc ID is correct. Such as, try using an underscore (_), instead of a dash (-). Same thing happend to me, for some reason it only recognized the underscore (even though it was a dash on the disk).
