Real and backup games cannot be readby the Wii, i always get a question mark on the screen saying the games can't be read. My Wii was updated to 3.1U and 1.9G for my Wiikey. Try using the following discs in that order (in GCOS mode):
1) 1.9b Recover
2) 1.9g Update
3) Hacked 1.3 Config

Rafadawn can you help me out? Iv read this thread over about 2 times already and have tired everything you have suggested to other people on here. Iv done both the 1.9b and 1.9g update both of them successful using the eject cd method. I also tired the different config disks hacked and unhack and am able to go to the config menu and turn region override on and off, I can also boot JP gcn games using the config disks dvd boot option. I have a NA wii that is up to date that plays NA games fine expect for smg even after doing the wii and wiikey updates I only get a black screen. Plus I cant get any of the JP wii games to be recognized by the system just gives me a cant read disk error. I tired doing the wiikey recovery disk cause I thought maybe it was dead or something but it didn't work either. Do you know what could be wrong with it or what I can do to get it to be able to play JP games along with smg.

The eject method does not work.
It just bypasses the machines ability to read and update the disc, but still goes along with the program saying that the update has taken place- when in fact you have not updated.
If you cannot upgrade, it is because your Wii-key cannot recieve input. (Connection error for whatever reason)
For this reason it is very likely that you cannot change any of the settings in the Config disc, because the WiiKey is not recieving those settings...
Thus- until your chip is replaced you may never be able to play import games. Reset and recovery CD's are also ineffective against this series of WiiKey.
Whether or not your chip is a clone or an original doesen't seem to matter. If you cannot upgrade, your chip is screwed up, and there is no solution short of replacing it.

It should be OK. Just two things to note:
1) After the 1.9g update, you might need to change the Region Override setting to ON using the 1.3 config disc. (Do this only oif the Wii cannot read backups)
2) Use games from your Wii's region if possible, in order to avoid brick problems.

The eject method is a last resort for people who are not able to update their Wiikey, as a means to shake things up.
You should perform the 1.9g update with a regular or GCOS disc. Follow the directions in the initial post of this thread.
If the 1.9g update goes through, then use the 1.3 Config to turn Region Override ON.

I'm going to be modding my Wii sometime this week or next week. I just wanted to ask in what order I should update/configure.
I have: 3.1U Wii.
I'm thinking of running these in order:
1. 1.3 GCOS Configuration
2. 1.9 Wiikey firmware update
3. Smash bros (2 disc 15% trick)
Will this work and not cause any trouble?
And if anyone succeeds with the 15% trick, please post!

I just want to contribute some information to the thread since it helped me a lot.I just used the 15% trick to play SSBB and it works fine, game and vedio, i ran the update till 20% and it still works fine. So don't unplug it until at least 15% or else you might have the problem which people have to tap "A" to skip menu and vedio or else an error appears.

You might need to run the 1.3 Config after the 1.9g update, in order to change the Region Override setting back to ON.
Also, follow ksodva's advice, but do not go far past the 20% mark.

Gotcha. About where is the 20% mark? I know that the 15% is around the letter W of the word "POWER" when it is updating...I'm guessing around the letter R, but I want to be very sure I'm not going to mess up.

Let me recap the situation:
1) You have a US Wii that plays US Backups, except SMG [What error do you get ehwn you insert SMG?]
2) You cannot play games from a different Region [This seems to point to a Region Override problem]
3) Did you patch SMG with WiiBrickBlocker?
4) You should try the 1.9g update in three variation: 1-Normal, 2-Padded, and 3-GCOS/Filechopped
5) Are you burning your disc on good media at 4x or lower speed?
6) Have you tried the Hacked Config disc to turn the Region Override ON (New links posted in the initial post)
NOTE: Use files from your Region.
let me know.

There is no sure way to check that.
You either try to run SMG ans see what happens (If it works then you have thwe 1.9g installed), or install 1.9g anyway and then run SMG.
