OK cool.
Also, why does the 1.3 config disc (and even then the 1.2 config disc) not work for some people? The 1.3 disc gave me and error and so did the 1.2, had to use the hacked 1.3.

Wii -Semi Bricked?

Ok, I have searched but I still can't find an answer to my question. My US Wii has -D2C and has been modded. The firmware was at 3.1e. We weren't running brickblocker until very recently. My son put in a unpatched copy of Donkey Kong - Jet Race (EUR) and the machine updated. The update hung 1/2 way through (waited 30 mins); we then power it off.

Now the machine still plays most games fine, but we cant get into the setup....typical semi-brick from what I've read. We tried running an unpatched copy of SMG and then the original disk. We never saw any updates and the symptoms remain unchanged.

Any help?

@kirbyg

I just did the same thing and semi-bricked my Wii with that Donkey Kong Jet Race game. I didn't know about the 'update-the-wrong-region=brick' problem till after it happened. I can't complain of course, but I've been looking for a solution and here it what I learned:

(please correct me if I'm wrong)

1: If you semi-brick your Wii with a wrong region update, you can *fix* it by applying an update with a newer firmware of the same region as your Wii. So if you have a US Wii that got bricked by a Euro update, you have to use a US game with a newer firmware to fix it.

2: Always run "wii brick blocker" (google it) before you burn an ISO. If there is an update in that game, it'll remove it, thus avoiding the problem in the future

3:Donkey Kong Jet Race is the EURO version of the US Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. I thought it was a new DK Game, got excited and well, opps.

4:There are only 2 ways to update the firmware on the Wii. One being an Internet update. But if your semi-bricked, you can't get to the settings to do it. Which leads to the only other way to update the firmware. And that's with a newer game that contains a firmware update built in.

Soooo...
What do I do now? Well, I can't tell what firmware version I'm at since I can't get to the settings. But I attempted to play Super Mario Paper, Super Mario Galaxy, and Mario Strikers Charged in order to hopefully fix it. Unfortunately none of them worked... I'm guessing for one of two reasons.
1: The update that Donkey Kong Jet Race (EUR) applied is newer than all the other games I mentioned. or...
2: Since I already ran those 3 other mario games, Once it updates once with them. it won't update again.

I'm curious to know what version games firmware update it. I've been googling for a Wii firmware history without luck. And I've also been searching for a list of games that includes firmware updates, and which version they have. If anyone knows of that info, I'm curious to check it out.

So, the only solution that I know of right now... is to wait for a new game to come out with a NEWER Firmware. And from the looks of it, Nintendo puts out updates on it's Mario titled/themed games.

I just looked up the upcoming releases at http://wii.ign.com/index/release.html and see the next "Mario" game is Mario Kart Wii to be released Q2 2008, so in a few months. But there may be a game with a new update earlier too. But it's just a hunch that that Mario Kart Wii will fix this. But there are other non-mario games that are known to have updates as well. Big Brain Academy was mentioned in a forum too. And there are mario games that probably don't have updates. So who knows? I'm just having some wishful thinking :)

If anyone has any other info, comments and/or solutions :) We'd love to hear them.

Unfortunately the latest firmware is 3.1U. If your machine is bricked at 3.1E, you will have to wait for a new game with a firmware higher than 3.1U.

don't worry, the wiikey team is already coming out with a new update for SSBB, and Nintendo will to so just wait like 3-5 days.

Sweet :)

Oh, I forgot to mention in my past post... those duplicate weather and news channels. I don't know how to get rid of them... but you can hold A+B on one, then drag it over the right arrow... hold it for a sec, and the next channel screen will scroll over. Then you can keep doing it till you get to the last screen and drop them at the end. I don't know how to delete them just yet... but that at least gets them out of the way.

Guy's I'm getting the dreaded "test failed, check your connections and try again" message when trying to update to 1.9g.

1) US Wii
2) D2C Key
3) Firmware 3.1U

My Wii can play all back-ups fine but I'd like to play SMG. I've tried using DVD-R's and +R's with no luck. I'm using the padded ISO from the first page of this thread.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks

@Nibrok

Er yeah mate, the 1.9g update is for the WiiKey not the D2CKey, the D2cKey should play SMG out of the box, no need for updating, just pop in your SMG click on the disk icon update and enjoy.

@rafadawn

Seen you've kept yourself busy with your pet project and I must say it's looking very good, it's the first thing I checked when I got home from my holiday before turning on my Wii, thanks for the hard work.

If your chip is D2B then Wiikey would be OK. Do you mean D2C?!?

Anyway, does the 1.9b update work? Does it go all the way through? (Yes, I mean 1.9b not 1.9g)

Try and let me know.

Just added instructions on how to play SSBB(jap) on your US or Pal console (So that you do not have to read the whole SSBB thread.

Hi, I just got my wiikey installed today, and we checked if the connections were good and everything, it seemed to be fine. I have 3.1 firmware on my wii, and i tested it, normal games worked! Then I got out the huge stack of different discs to try that were burned using imgburn at 4x speed to see what config disc would work. One after another, it said unalbe to read disc. I tried 1.1, 1.0,1.2, 1.3, 1.3 gcos, 1.2 gcos, the methods listed here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/566969, nothing worked! So here i am now, trying to make my wiikey work which has never had a setup disc or anything on my 3.1 firmware wii...

Any suggestions?

and btw, my wiikey might be a clone, i am not sure

I downloaded and ran 1.3 config bat for the US region. I have a 4. gig something image that I burned. But now I have a problem. I cannot get it to access the menus to change my DVD speed. When I run the config disc it says it is version 1.2 region ukn and I need to insert the wii base disc (what is this) and hit any key.

Please help me!

I have a WiiKey installed into my Wii and want to play games out of my region. Should I use a brick blocker and/or change the region of the game, or should I just leave the game as it is?

Wii not reading anything!

hey, my wii wont read ANY of my backups, valid GC or Wii games, it was working fine earlier i went into GCOS to change the region block and the disc speed from 6x to 3x. Then shortly after I rechanged the diskspeed to 6x again. That is when my problem started. (i.e. "Unable to read disk"). The wii -sounds- like its booting the game normally but it just keeps ending up with the same result.

any ideas?

@halo5god:
Try the 1.9b Recover Disc. Start it and let it run for 4-5 min. The screen will stay black, but hopefully it will reset your Wiikey (if that is the problem)
The try the 1.9g update, and then the Hacked 1.3 Config disc.

@DHua:
1) In order to play games from out of region, you need to turn REGION OVERRIDE on
2) If you want to avoid problem, then patch the games with WiiBrickBlocker. However, that will make games that carry firmware updates unusable (and that is actually good if you want to avoid brick problems
3) In any case check the Region compatibility list linked in the first post of this thread.

@happyloaf:
Try the Hacked 1.3 Config disc.
If that does not work try running the 1.9g update again and then the config disc.
If that does not work either, follow my suggestions to halo5god

NOTE: Please burn your discs at 4x or lower speeds, on good media, and without any other program running while burning. [If possible, verify your burn]
Lately I have started to see several problems caused by defective burns.

De-solder your Wiikey and re-install it again.
Personally i prefer the long-wire method.

PS: Do you see any sign of life when running GCOS discs?

I already set my Wii to region Override. Do I still need to use a region patcher on Wii game ISO if I have already turned this option on?

@Rafa,
my wii wont read -ANYTHING- as in any disc i put in,
like it was working fine put in Gcos turned the region option on turned the disc speed from 6x down to 3x, realized that didnt do anything at all so i flipped it back to 6x keeping the region thing off, rebooted wii, inserted disc, "unable to read disc", so i put in a actual legit GC disc, "unable to read", literally -any- disc at all, i get the unable to read error message....

sorry, just re-read my message, and in no way am i trying to sound like an asshole, so if i come off as one i apologize :)

I have seen only two ways to get out of your situation in the past:

1) Some people succeeded in fixing the situation just by tapping more or less decisively the Wii

2) Others had to remove the Wiikey or fix the soldering (Possibly a short caused by one of several possible factors, including drive vibrations)

3) There is no way to fix the Wii by using discs unless the Wii is able to read regular or GCOS discs.
