1) You could get a DRE
2) or a Black screen
3) or, if the bad burn is one of the Wiikey update disc, you could mess up the Wiikey's firmware.
That is why I reccommend burning on good media, at 4x or lower speed, and with no other computer programs or processes running.

@rafa
Quick question: Just received a backup of Super Fruit Fall from someone who has informed me that it is US NTSC. From what I have been able to find on the internet, that game is only available in PAL region format. If I am at wiikey 1.9g and wii 3.1u, is there any track record on this game that can tell me if it might possibly brick or semi brick my US WII? Hopefully, it will simply play or not play and won't cause any problems.
Just skimmed through the 24 pages of this thread and was wondering if there is any USA WII game listing that states the playability of recent release games for firmware updates (1.9g & 3.1u). For instance I have read where DKJR is giving US WII owners a problem, so of course I am going to stay away from that game. But if a game list is out there that states known problems then that would be invaluable. It probably exists somewhere if someone can kindly point me to it.
Thank you for your help.

I haven't tried any back ups just my regular wii games and they work fine, no I didn't uses any programs on smg. When I put it in it comes up on the wii menu and after I start it I just get a black screen. I tired those 3 ways before plus all the other files listed on the first page plus files I tired from different sites cause like you said its good to try different ones. Yep dvd rs using imgburn copying at x4 I followed all the different steps word for word that are posted on the first page. I tired the different config hacks also. I can go into config settings and change the options along with doing all the other things that the config disk can do like boot a JP gcn games plus like I said I can do the updates with eject cd me doth. do you think it could be like one of the other posters said method clone wiikey or a broken one? I really don't understand what's going on with it all the programs I try from this thread work I just cant get JP and smg to work ><.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have said it once before and I will say it again.
The Eject Method does not work.
Basically you are telling the Wii, to read and then write this firmware file. It is "x" bytes, tell me it is correct when you are finished.
If the CD is in, it will read it as "x" bytes and come back that 0 have been written, and you will recieve the error.
If the CD is out, it will reat it as "0" bytes, and come back that 0 bytes have been written, so you will recieved the desired input, however in the end 0 bytes have been written.
Your Mod Chip (Wiikey or clone or whatever it may be) is not recieving input from the wire that recievies inputs connected to the system. This could be because that one particular wire isn't soldered in correctly (obvious if it isn't), or because the chip is defective.
If the chip is defective, it just means it cannot recieve any inputs.
For this reason you cannot update it.
You cannot restore the chip using recovery discs.
and you cannot make config disc changes, because whatever commands the machine is making, are falling upon the deaf ears of the chip.
There is no solution to this problem minus removing the chip and replacing it.
It is however to my knowledge that Original Games, do not suffer from this issue. Meaning that the Mod-Chip detterent, is only launched when the games DVD code is inputted by the mod chip, rather than by the original game itself.
For me that is a bonus because I'd rather pay $50 dollars and by SSBB, than have to remove my chip and replace it to get the game.

If SMG runs fine, then DK will too, as long as it is from the same region.

Unfortunately, it looks you might have one of the defective chips that cannot be updated.
However, I have a couple more questions:
Have you tried a different burn of SMG? Can you try other beckups? Maybe not from the Jap region?
Have you seen any signs of life on any of the 1.9b and 1.9g attempts? Any progress whatsoever or did you get always the BFailed error?

hey rafa,
in ssbb, i played some vs matches until the blue pokemon, Lucario, approaches in "challenger approaching", but then when i press 2 to fight him, i get a white screen that says some jap words and the only english word is "wii"
i am playin with the 4gb one, did this happen b/c of the limits of the game on the disc?
thanks

rafadawn,
you mentioned in an earlier post that you provided a link to a switch solution for the wiikey that would disable it. would you be kind to redirect me to the link? thank you.

The switch goes between the chip/board on either 1 (Ground) or 2 (VCC/+3.3V).
Most people reccommend placing it on 2 (That is between point 2 on the board and point 2 on the chip).

hey everyone, i had to sign up to this because of all the great advice some of you give. i have someproblems with my wii that started after trying to play the jap ver of super smash bros brawl (backup). i updated the system to the 3.1u and also updated my boot disk and wii key by doing this:
here's what we did:
1. downloaded wiikey setup v1.3 and unziped it
2. run fixsize on the command prompt to correct the size of bootdisc.us.iso file using this format: fixsize bootdisc.us.iso ..fixsize and bootdisc.us.iso are included in the wiikey setup v1.3 zip file
3. downloaded make-multiv3 and unziped it
4. copied bootdisc.us.iso file and pasted it on the same folder as the unziped make-multiv3
5. run make-multiv3 on the command prompt using this format: make-multiv3.exe output.iso USA bootdisc.us.iso. this will create output.iso file
6. burned output.iso to verbatim dvd-r using nero at speed 4x
7. burned bootdisc.us.iso to verbatim dvd-r using nero at speed 4x
8. booted wii with the output.iso disk
after all this i set up my wii key to region override ON, and speed to 3X and saved the settings. but these settings didnt save, smash bros didnt play and i got error 001. i checked the settings and they were back to normal!! they dont seem to save. every other game and backup works except the jap smash bros. can anyone help me out, i would appreciate it.

rossip,
Are you trying to run the single layer or dual layer version of Brawl?
The configuration settings on the wiikey using the config disc actually do save. It's just that whenever you run the config disc again, it resets the settings to default which means it turns region override back to OFF. Try running the config disc again, turn region override ON, save settings, and running Brawl right after. Let me know how it goes.

hey lumpiaz, thanks for replying.
well i tried brawl and it still doesnt work. all it says when i start it up is the error 001, unauthorized device. when i updated the wii to the 3.1u it gave me those duplicate channels in japanese. im not sure if that tells u anything, they dont even work anyway. all my other backups work except that one. i tried both types a dvd5 and dvd9 both dont work. the wii doesnt even respond to the dual layer. i have read the problems on this forum but everyone seems to be able to get it to work, im getting frustrated lol!!
anyway let me know what u guys think

rafadawn has a very useful and informational post at the beginning of this thread about how to run brawl (both versions). try reading those up.
Aside from rafadawn's posts, these are what I did to get both versions to work for me:
1) For DVD5 version, I burned it at 4x speed with a TDK DVD-R. I burned two copies, one brickblocked and one non-brickblocked. I did the 15% trick (to avoid duplicate channels) with the non-brickblocked original copy to allow the dual layer update and then ran the brickblocked version. It ran perfectly.
2) Since my wii was updated from the DVD5 copy, I needed to brickblock the DVD9 version to prevent the full update. I burned this one with a Sony DVD+R DL at 2.4x speed and it ran perfectly on my wii.
Since you ran the entire update, it should still still run normally with both the DVD5 and DVD9 versions. Try burning another copy of your isos but this time, brickblock them before burning. There's a link to the newest version of wiibrickblocker in rafa's post.

rossip -
If you are getting Error 001 it means that the wii is detecting your Mod-Chip.
If you are running a WiiKey you need to make sure it is updated to Version 1.9G
If you have another Modchip you need to make sure that it is updated to the latest firmware, although not ALL chips support playing games with this kind of copy protection.
