Hi everyone,
I'm new at this and if I'm posting in the wrong place please tell me where to post
Firstly, I have one of the first Wiis, its a UK Wii, (PAL), and yesterday I installed my Wiikey, and the Wii still works fine. I havent yet used the configuration disc, because I haven't got any discs yet. I tried using an original game and it worked fine. I tried connecting to the internet to perform a Wii system update, but a warning message came up saying something along the lines of: "if your Wii has had an unauthorized technical modification, it may result in inoperability of your console". Is this just a warning to scare people, or is it true, because I have heard things about Region Settings bricking up people's Wiis.
Also, the configuration disc I was thinking of using was 1.2b, although I know it won't work with SMG and SSBB. I have heard that 1.9g has bricked many people's Wiis up after December 1st last year, so I'm a bit wary of using it.
Another question, is it safe to keep WiiConnect24 on after I go to sleep?
Thanks a lot :)

SMG updates to 3.0U not 3.1U.
If you want the latest update, you need to update via Internet. BTW, the latest update is 3.2U.
Originally posted by dnccall: I have been playing SMG (original) for months and Wii has always been at 3.0U. My mod wii is not online and SMG never asked to upgrade to 3.1U (if it did, I didn't see it). Is there any way to still upgrade to 3.1U from the SMG disk? I want to be sure I have all the latest before trying SSBB. Thanks.
Incredible knowledge base demonstrated here. Great work.

The update about "if your Wii has had an unauthorized technical modification" it is false, update via internet to get the latest firmware.
Just follow Rafadrawn guide to update your wiikey to 1.9 beta hotfix
The configuration disc 1.3 work for me, if it doesnt work for you try the hacked version
As for wiiconnect24 I think it is safe. It is to give your wii very minor updates. I only keep it on when I am playing, because it tends to heat up my wii

Ok, thanks for that WiiChess! :)
Also, I only have DVD+R's at home, so will the config disk work properly with them? Also, when performing wii system updates from the wii, do i need to have region free enabled or disabled on the wiikey? Is the region the reason that wiis get bricked? Also, what is a hotfix?
Thanks for putting up with me :)

1.DVD-R are better, but DVD+R will do the Job
2.First make sure that you have the latest firmware, go to wii setting and take the update.
3. Download and burn the config disk and 1.9g fix(the wiikey site called it hotfix because the update had problems at first) you can get it from the first page of this thread.
4. On you update your wiikey to 1.9g use the config disk to set the REGION OVERRIDE back ON. (You will need a GC controller)
PS the reason people get bricked is because they run updates from a game of a different region. I have a semi-bricked wii because I updated my NTSC wii with a Pal games called wiichess{Yes, Nintendo made a game after me :)}. If you update from a different region you are taking a risk, unless you use wiiblock more info on bricking is HERE
If you never want to take the chance download game of you region.
If you need to play an imported game make sure you have the latest firmware and wiiblocker.

Hi,
Thanks for all your help so far btw!
Unfortunately, I havent got a GC controller, although I've heard you can use the reset button and others to navigate?
Also, should I install the wii system updates, then 1.9g straight away, or should I install the wii system updates, then 1.9b, then upgrade to 1.9g?
When you said "download and burn the config disk and 1.9g fix", did you mean config 1.3?
4. Is the 1.9g hotfix stable, as the readme says 'use at your own risk'?
Lastly, after my wii had been modded, the internal clock changed. Is it safe to change it, and why does it do it?
Thanks guys :)

OH, MY, GOD...
i want to kill myself. ok here's whats going on, if someone could help me i would love you with all my life!
ok, i just got my modded wii back today it came with wiikey with the latest (1.9g or whatever) and it came with a back-up of excitetruck and i played it a little bit and i was like cool, but the main reason i modded my wii was for ssbb. So i got to buisness and burnt the gcos 1.3 thing and put it in my wii, it read it as a gamecube disc. I then went in and turned region free thing to ON.
and im pretty sure i didnt save? i dont really remember. i think i just turned off my wii. Then as i was waiting for ssbb to burn i played excite truck some more. Then it was taking a while so i turned off my wii and did other things until it was burned.
it finally burned i took it out, and turned on my wii and put it in and it wouldnt read the disc, and so i was like ok, so i put in the gcos 1.3 disc and it wouldnt read that disc. So i read up and burned a 1.2 update or something and it wouldnt read that disc. And it wont read wiisports or any discs!! even the wiikey recovery disc! IT WONT READ ANYTHING AHHH! and so i guess its semi-bricked? but yet i have 3.1U firmware...? i've never played SMG though, but that shouldnt matter should it? I've been looking for answers for about 3 1/2 hours straight now and no one really has had my excact problem where it was playing at first but then just doesnt read any discs?!?
i just want to play brawl =[[[[[[[[[[
thanks so much if you even read all that crap, i just feel like dyeing right now

ok i've been reading through all these freakin 28 pages, and i realized my problem is similar to halo5god's problem, if not the exact same problem(it wont read ANY discs, and everything else on the wii is in perfecting working order). Where rafa told him to tap it more or less or resolder it...
i havent really tried tapping it lol, but there is a problem with resoldering it..i never soldered it in the first place i sent it off to a guy to mod my wiikey and so i would have NO IDEA what to do.. or even how to open up my wii lol..

Unfortunately, as you have read, we can only program the Wiikey by using backup discs in Wii or GCOS mode. If heither type works, then there is nothing you can do, except physical intervention.
Contact your modder and get it fixed.

@alpha22:
1) You can use the RESET button.
2) Either way it will work.
3) After the 1.9g update, you will need to use the Config 1.3 disc (if you want to activate Region Override). If 1.3 does not work, then the hacked version should do it.
4) 1.9g is stable. Very much so. However, as i explained a few posts earlier, take great care when burning the 1.9g disc. [No other processes running, verify the burn if possible, etc..]

@RafaDawn
Thanks for that :)
1. I was trying to access the wii shop channel and it said i need to update it. I was wondering if I need to install the config disc before I run the update.
2. If i do have to install the config disc (1.3?) before performing a system update, will I need to have region free on or off if i perform a wii system update?
3. My Wii internal clock changed after installing my wiikey. Will changing the clock affect my wii or wiikey in any way ( apart from changing the time :P )?
4.I only have dvd+r's at home, will 1.9g hotfix work on them, or will it screw up my wii?
5. What do 'SL' and 'DL'stand for?
6. On your first post of this thread, is the padded 1.9g file the hotfix, or will i have to download the other one and filechop it?
P.S. Sorry about all the questions
Thanks for all your help :)

@alpha22:
1) Personally I would get the Wiikey updated to 1.9g before you update anything else. That said, the Wii shop update is safe for Wiikeys.
2) You will need to use the Config disc to turn region override ON after you update thw Wiikey to 1.9g. I would also do that right after the 1.9g update. Now, do you need the Region Override ON for system updates? The answer is NO. You need region override to play games from different regions. [One note of caution: Use the right region for Wiikey updates. Also, read what the BRICKING implication is for playing games from other regions]
3) Go ahead and fix your clock.
4) The instructions from the Wiikey team were to use a DVD-R for updates and config disc. I would use a DVD-R.
5) SL = single-layer dvd disc (4.7GB capacity). With the exception of SSBB, all Wii games so far are SL. SSBB is a DL game (8.4GB).
6) The padded version is already filechopped. Just burn and run it. [Use correct region!!]

So, this is what I have to do, right?
Firstly, I haven't got any firmware installed yet.
1. I put the 1.9g hotfix into my wii (on a dvd-r, burned with nero) and let it do its thing.
2. I then put in my config disc (1.3) (also on a dvd-r, burned with nero) and turn region override to ON with the reset button ( I haven't got a gamecube controller).
3. I perform any wii system update that needs doing, and then play the games on my wii (including SMG and SSBB?).
Question: If I leave region override OFF, and only play games from my region (PAL), will everything still work OK?

ok i've been reading and the only conlusions i've came to is that my lens is bad? maybe? idk, because my situations are pretty similar to theirs except..mine actually worked at first..like it was modded it worked turned it off and on a couple of times throughout the day, still worked, but right after i did the gcos and turned region override on and then turned off my wii thats when all hell broke loose.
i dont think i saved it when i turned region override on, could that have been the problem? i think i just turned it to on and then either turned off my wii or ejected the disc right after i turned it on...any thoughts?
btw thanks rafa for dealing with me

wait, what if me already having 3.2U firmware and then doing the GCOS..Would that cause a problem? because before people only had 3.1U and were doing it fine, but 3.2U came out just recently and no one has really had this problem? even if that was the problem there is no way i can really fix it is there? since my wii wont read ANY discs(sorry i have to keep repeating but people keep forgetting that it really wont read a one disc)]
thanks

If the problem is physical then the options are:
1) Visual inspection of Wiikey soldering
2) Test with multimeter Wiikey connections
3) Cut Wiikey connection on pin 1 to see if the Wiikey is bad. [Basically, disables Wiikey and see if you can load originals]
4) If not 3, then drive is bad.
If the problem is firmware based, then, using good DVD-R media, try your luck with any/all of the various Config/Update/Recover discs in Wii and GCOS mode.
You may want to try the 1.2b Recover disc ... but still, the Wii has to be able to at least read the disc.

1) My wii (jap) can play SSBB (jap) no problem, but when i finish classic mode, the wii does not recognize the disc(SL). Whats the problem?
2) Is it possible for a US wii to play Jap SSBB?
3) Is it possible for a Jap wii to play ENG SSBB?

1. A lot of people had that problem when they finish classic on the SL, but on DL it works.
2. US wii can play jap SSBB but you have to do an update which will give you dup channels, or you could do the 15% trick.
3. How are we supposed to know if jap can play eng yet?
