I strongly recommend you pay $10 more for a DMS 4 Pro SE, it'll be much easier to play games off the HD, plus its got twice as big an onboard flash as the DMS 4 Lite. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you and you already purchased the chip. The DMS 4 Lite is a great chip, there's just no reason to get it over the DMS 4 Pro. Query: if you know the Pioneer can bookype, why not just use it?

Tok were you directing that query at me? Anyways I'v got too many outgoing purchases to get plus format media at the moment (ie TFT monitor, graphics card, etc etc), however I didn't say that the Pioneer can booktype with the official firmware as it cannot. There is a Japanese hacked firmware out that can make it booktype but I have a Sony with that ability so I'v no need to risk flashing it with firmware that has instructions that I don't understand.

PS Taiyo Yudens expensive in the UK for fullface printable and I only really buy them in the hundreds to save up in mula!! But when I make my next order I'm going to get some plus format aswell and test my Sony booktyping ability.

No, I was asking Ace. You're always going to pay more online for +R's. If -R's work for you, stick with em.

How is Taiyo Yuden 16X media? I had heard that the PlayStation 2 has a hard time reading these discs. I'd also like to know this because I found some "Made in Japan" Sony DVD-Rs with the octagonal spacer on top of the spindle indicating they're made by Taiyo Yuden(in case I burn a game on a burner that doesn't support DVD+R booktyping to DVD-ROM), but they're 16X. I can't find any more 8X Sony DVD-Rs, and one of the only DVD-Rs I see that are 8X are Memorex(crap, won't even dare put this near my PlayStation 2) and Verbatim(tops, but seems to often come out as bad batches). If Taiyo Yuden 16X media is not recommended, where would I be able to buy 8X Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs(not online, please. Locally available in Montreal, Quebec, up here in Canada)?

TYG03 should be okay for PS2 backups. I've only burned a couple for PS2 backups, but they work okay. Just burn at 4x or 8x and you should be okay. If my choice was Verb 16x media or TYG03, I'd go with TYG03. I haven't read about many people having issues with TYG03. Verb 16x media has caused a lot of people problems, I wouldn't use them for PS2 backups. They should work well for movie backups, just not PS2 games.

Those are the Verbatim 16X DVDs, correct?

Now, I need to ask a question about Princo media. Here, it's classified as not-so-great media, but my cousin used 4X "Made in Japan" Princos for his friend, and he had no coasters. I even told him that those are fake TDKs. He tells me they're made by someone else. Anyways, could this please be clarified?

One more thing, but this has nothing to do with DVDs, so I'll link the question from the CD forum. Tokijin, since you seem to be(and I'm sure you are) an expert in media, answer me the question I asked on the semi-final post in this thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334468.

I don't know much about Princo media, other than it's not very good. It's likely dumb luck your cousin has had success with it. Most peeps I knew had issues with it and moved on to better media. Once you get comfortable with TY or Verbs, you won't be going back. I've never personally used TY CD media, but according to people I've talked to and online reviews, it's the best CD media around, along with Verb's. I personally and am not nearly as picky with CD media as DVD media. I use MIT Sony CDR's with no issues. I used to use Memorex before I knew how crappy they were. Didn't have any issues with them either. I'd still recommend using good CD Media, I don't use Memorex for PSX backups anymore, I transfer any PSX games I want to play to better CDR's or just play them on my XBox.

Should he quit using them? I'm having a hard time convincing him to stop the use of Princo media. Those will do like CMC discs, right, which is cause excessive wear to a PlayStation 2's laser? Since 16X Taiyo Yuden seems good, should I get him to try 16X "Made in Japan" Sony DVD-Rs with the octagonal spacer on top, meaning Taiyo Yuden made the discs?

People're stubborn with media. Most likely your cousin is like screw this yahoo, this media works fine for me. That's a normal reaction, I react that way sometimes. If he's okay with it, it'd be hard to get him to switch. I'd say just use Taiyo Yuden for yourself. Chances are he'll have issues with Princo at some point. Likely he'll have some game that he can't get to boot, try twenty different things, get frustrated, then burn it to quality media, and it'll work fine. It's hard to convince people that good media is important, so I stopped trying. If people insist on using substandard media, then they have to live with the consequences. Yes the octogonal spacers and MIJ will be Taiyo Yuden, I have always found this to be the case in many different stores at different times.

I don't know what you mean by high street shops. You can get Taiyo Yudens under the Sony label. Look for 50 spindles of DVD+R's or DVD-R's that're made in Japan with an octongonal spacer (piece of styrofoam) on top of the spindle.

You can just go to electronic stores(like Best Buy), or stores that have electronic departments(such as Wal-Mart, where I got my Taiyo Yuden-manufatured Sony DVD+Rs). Just remember to look for "Made in Japan" on the label of a 50-pack Sony DVD-R/DVD+R spindle with a white, octagonal piece of styrofoam on top. You can also get Taiyo Yuden under Maxell's name, but it's hard to find, and I think this only applies to DVD+Rs. Look for "Made in Japan" on the package, and also look for "High Grade", not sure where that is, and I can never find it on any set of "Made in Japan" Maxell DVD+Rs. Tokijin, where do you find "High Grade" on the package?

The Maxell High Grades are in a yellow package that says "High Grade" on it. I can only find them in 5 packs at my local Wal-Mart. I've been told you can find them at drug stores and chain stores for cheap, look around.

Yellow, instead of the traditional purple? I can never find those anywhere.
I have a question concerning inkjet printable Maxell DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs. Those are made in Japan, but have no "High Grade" on the package. Do I have to look for that too on inkjet printable Maxell DVDs? Who makes these discs, and are they any good?

Hey guys just wonderin if any of u could help me out.
i have a v12 pstwo and have been burning games on maxell (RICOHJPN-R03-004) and (RITEK-R03-002) burning at 4x and booktyping to dvd-rom.
The first time i played the games the ritek discs ran flawlessly while the richojpn skipped (although Nero cd speed gave it 95%). couple of days later the ritek started skipping aswell.
i dont think its my burner; i have a lite-on sohw 1633s with bsoy firmware and films come out great.
could it be the media or the laser? i use swapmagic 3.6.
oh yeah!! and my pstwo doesnt play dvd9s at all! f*&k! GT4 n GOW spin and then stop repeatedly, and of course my backups of them skip.
This is so gettin on my man tits!
any help would be greatly appreciated.

@Ace Yes, all the High Grades I've seen are in a yellow package that says High Grade. These will be made in Japan, the other Maxells will be made in Taiwan. You mentioned that you'll occasionally find TY Maxell's, not so much nowadays. It's not real common anymore. Mostly you'll find TY's under the Sony or Fuji labels. Also you can get them under the Panasonic level. In the past, you could find them under TDK or Maxell, but this is virtually non existant nowadays, at least in the US.

@ NinReznor Get some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatims. I copied all the old games I had backed up on Ritek to TY's. Riteks would skip on me fairly consistently. They're fine for movies, but the PS2 laser is very picky, stick with 4x or 8x Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims. The PS2 FAQ link in my sig contains info about where to find them.

Could be your laser is dirty. Try cleaning it with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Swap Magic doesn't work with DL games, that would explain why your DVD-9 backups don't work, unless you have DVD-5 versions of those games.

74. Q. I turn on my PS2, the disc spins and makes a "clicking" sound. It says "disk read error" in my browser, what do I do?
A. This could be a sign your laser is dirty or scratched. Clean it with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol if you think it might be dirty, also be sure to check it for scratches. Fat PS2 v.1-11: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Guides/ps2diy/ Consult the links listed earlier in this thread for info. This could also be a sign your game is dirty or scratched. You can clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth or tissue. Only apply a couple drops of rubbing alcohol on the disc, 4 or so evenly spaced. You may want to use an eye dropper for this. Rub it with a lint free cloth or tissue in a non circular pattern until it's dry. Your other option is to buff out the surface scratches with on the disc with a "Game Doctor." I came across a $20 Memorex cleaning device at Wal-Mart which basically does the same thing. It worked wonders for my scratched Breaker Pro disc. The Game Doctor will set you back around $40. If the scratches are too deep, this won't make any difference. If you get the "clicking" sound with a backup, all these same things apply. Also MAKE SURE that your not using cheap media. Again check the links posted earlier in this FAQ. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341

Okay, but you didn't answer my question about the "Made in Japan" Inkjet-printable Maxell DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs(unless they're made by Maxell and not by Taiyo Yuden). What's the worst a pack of "Made in Japan" Maxell DVDs can code out as?
Oh, and these are the discs in question:

Quote:
In the past, you could find them under TDK or Maxell, but this is virtually non existant nowadays, at least in the US.
Virtually non-existant in the United States? Up here in Canada, it's non-existant, period.

Yeah that's what I meant. In the past I've had wisenheimers correct me when I make an always this or always that statement, so I try to rarely say anything is always this or never that. To my knowledge, the Maxell and TDK TY's are no longer available anywhere, minus some batches floating around here and there. I don't know about inkjet printable media, I never use it. People that use TY printables say they're as good as regular TY media.
