Hi Guys, im not a newbie as such but i've neva really dealt with port forwarding and etc etc. I now need to as i am gpetting very slow downloads around 10kb/s if lucky. I have read the forum and have been trying things as best as I understand them. I just done a shieldup test and on the grid i get alot of green and blues. what I am wondering is that shouldn't it show some REDS because I thought you needed some ports open? Also I noticed it said your computer IP address is 82.3.6.50 So when I forward port should i be forwarding to this address. I would really appreciate if someone can kinda baby sit me through this. I am using DI-614+ router

if you get a green face then the only other thing you can do to improve download speeds is to configure Azureus correctly. the most important configuration to set correctly is the "global upload speed" option.

the easiest way to make sure you configure Azureus correctly is to go to Azureus IRC channel emmbedded in Azureus itself. just go to Tools>>Options>>the Plugins plus (+) sign>>Irc. type a nickname for yourself in the Nickname box and Save. Now, go to Plugins>>IRC to connect to the Azureus help IRC channel. There you will tell some dudes (who are there to help ppl) your connection's max upload speed and they will tell you the best Azureus configuration for your particular connection.

if after you do this you still get slow downloads speeds then there probably aren't many seeds and peers to download from. Or the tracker just sucks.

Basics, just in case:

(1) Some trackers (circles of files sharers) are just crappy no matter how well you've set up your torrent program, or how many seeds and peers there are.

(2) Upload speed

(a) The whole torrent philosophy is that you can't cop out and not share. If your upload speed is set low in the torrent program, it rewards you with crappy download speed. So

(b) to get the most speed out of your download that you can, you need know your upload speed.

(c) In your torrent program Set your upload max speed to 75% to 80% of what you know it to be. This is because the other 20 to 25 percent is needed by the torrent program to operate. Setting your upload max too high in the torrent program will retard your download speed just as if you did not set it high enough. Example: If your ISP says you have 400 Kbps upload speed, then setting max upload speed in your torrent program to 300 Kbps is 75%.

---> And now comes the hairy part - torrent programs use bytes not bits in the configuration. Look closely here: kbps and KB/s are very different. It's not the slash that makes the difference, the "s" still = one second, it is the letter "b". A capital letter "B" = Bytes and a small letter "b" = bits. AND 8 bits = 1 byte. So 300 Kbps in your torrent program = about 37 KB/s. (a letter k = kilo = 1000. A capital letter "K" or small letter "k" doesn't matter here, though technically it does somewhere).

And let me add here a 3rd term: 125 KB/s = 1000 kbps = 1 Mbps. Notice the small letter "b" in Mbps, so back to bits not Bytes.. Mbps stands for millions of bits per second or megabits per second.

-----
I use BitTornado, so if Azureas isn't working out for you, make sure it isn't some quirk with your computer and it, and try BitTornado.

As far as setting up BitTornado, on the default page there are two boxes, one for max-upload-speed and one for max-uploads. "Automatic" will be selected - I strongly recommend to not use the "automatic" setting - choose either slow-DSL/cable or fast-DSL/cable. Either of those will add in numbers in those boxes. From that point you can adjust the numbers in those two boxes.

Max-uploads (this is the bottom box of the two and not max-upload-speed). This box means like max-connections, and I recommend a setting of "4", at least for now.

Now, the top box of the two is for max-upload-speed. Set it, as discussed above, (in KB/s not kbps) to 75% to 80% of your Internet max upload speed. (You can test your up and down speed here: http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0)

Those settings in BitTornado will take effect when you change them. If you tweak other settings on other BitTornado pages, to take effect, some require you exit BitTornado and start it again.

BitTornado can use any ports. In BitTornado try a port or port range way up there like in the 50000 range. Don't forget to port forward in your router the same ports you set BitTornado to use.

A yellow light will always appear at first. --If-- you have no firewall issues, that light will turn green by several minutes into the download.

Don't forget, if you have a router which is a hardware firewall, you are probably still running a software firewall like Windows XP's own firewall, or another. You also need to exclude your torrent program in this software firewall so it ignores your torrent program completely, or you can also port forward here too just like a router.

P.S. if your router has a cryptic menu for settings, or you are thinking about buying a router, I recommend Netgear. There's no pussy-footing around, You can't not understand to click "Port Forwarding" from the menu, and you can't mistake where to add in the port or port range, and even if you are from mars and can't see the two boxes to add in the port number or numbers, there are even simple explanations over to the right side. ....Besides Netgear routers are cool looking... ;)

P.P.S. I've read here that some DSL modems might be blocking ports and your router might be set up correctly. I don't know anything about DSL modem configuring, and for instructions brand would probably make a difference too.

I have been following this thread since the beginning of the year, and I suppose that enough is enough, and the original should finally be closed. People repeatedly asking the same questions without bothering to read through the thread keep complicating this jumbling mess of what used to be an almanac of Bittorrent wisdom. Could the senior members in their altruistic foresight compile a definitive guide to F.A.Q. regarding Bittorrent speeds and slay this dolorous monster?

Kind Regards,

Hey. Who have experience with satelite ADSL. Means I make connection with server by ISDN modem but I'm downloading by (air)satelite with speed of 384kbps. With Explorer or Mozilla speed remains 385kbps but when i'm using BitTornado speed is 128kbps. Why?!

Of course with nothing better to do, in my spare time, I've thought about getting away from it all and buying property away from everything including telephone and electric lines. Nowadays photovoltaics could easily supply you electric needs. Then you have a satellite TV dish. And also a satellite Internet connection, and for a telephone you can now use one of those phones that uses the Internet.

OK. So I've looked at satellite Internet. Download speed sucks really. Why do they let the DirecWay gal advertise saying it's "super fast"?

Anywho here is what I believe is your problem - your upload speed is only at dial-up speed at 50 kbps (same as 7 KB/s). Since torrent programs are written so you can't cheat you have to share in the download process with others in your circle - it's looking at your super-crap of an upload speed and then says "this guy is holding back upload speed", and so it goes and restricts your download speed.

ALSO - I read that the ISP that provides your service will cut you off if you download too much. So if you are downloading a movie and it takes you 12 hours, long before that your ISP is going to cut your download speed to a trickle anyway..

Let's face it, what you have is a great alternative --only-- if you live in the boonies and cannot get s cable or DSL or even some kind of wireless Internet connection other than satellite. You better just give up planning on lengthy downloads.

Of course I looked well over a year ago, maybe things have changed.

I myself have a satellite TV & Comcast cable rewards me by charging me 25% more than others per month for my Internet connection because I don't subscribe to their crappy TV service... Well it's better but it once was crappy.

By the way, I just got a Tivo. I've got to tell you people this is the most convenient coolest invention I have ever had. It makes it so easy to record TV shows it borders on insane. I can even just set it to record a show at the beginning of the season (or whenever0 and tell it to get every 1st run show each week. and it's done. It can save up to 70 hours (hard drive). If I am watching a TV program and have to go to the head, I click pause and it's recording anyway what I am watching and so I come back I click to resume and from then on I am a few minutes behind live TV unless I click to catch up. However I don't think I'll ever watch live TV again because it's so easy to fast forward by commercials. It's got two tuners in it. Sports fans, though you can rewind and play at any time, they even thought to add an easy instant-replay button that shoots back 8 seconds, and then you could reply at slow-mo speed if you wanted.

I can't stress how easy it is to operate, no setting times (unless you want too) you just click on a TV show from the guide. I am such a computer addict I lose track of time and was constantly missing the few shows I did want to see..
