1) What region is your Wii from?
-US (NTSC)
2) Are you able to access your Wii's setiings (options)?
Yes.
3) Can you play Originals? If not, what error do you get?
All originals still play fine.
4) Can you play any of the backups? If not, what error do you get?
No backups working. I get the 'Unable to read Disc' Error.. -sometimes, after trying repeatedly to get the disc to play, I will get the black screen with white writing.
5) Has any of the Config or Update discs worked so far?
No config discs have worked yet
6) Any signs of life from the Wiikey?
No..
-it's the wiikey, huh? I will open up and look again.. -I'm not familiar with testing equipment, to see if there is something wrong that I can't see.
. I'll let you know if I find out anything..
Thanks!

-the file I burned was an iso file that says bootdisc.iso (which was created by my double clicking the BootableDisc.bat).
...when you say you burnt the .iso file, you mean you put ImgBurn in write mode, and pointed to where the iso was?

I ask because friends of mine have burnt the iso file itself on to a data dvd using Nero, as if it were a file in a directory...

Also, my understanding is that it is really important you have DVD-R media, and good ones at that (with Taiyo-Yuden or MCC media codes). Usually Verbatim brand ones use one of those manufacturers. I can vouch from personal trial & error experience, sometimes DVD+R discs work, sometimes they don't (all from the same batch with the same media code).

OK, I'm eager to play Wiifit (as is my wife) but I'm a little anxious because different threads have potentially conflicting information.

I'm using a 3.1U Wii (with Wiikey) in Japan. Last month I tried to play Super Mario Galaxy (J) and I couldn't. I agreed to the update, it gave me duplicate weather/news channels, it allowed me to see SMG on the channel menu, but I couldn't run the game. Even using the 1.9g update, I couldn't play the game. I ended up getting a backup version of SMG (U), which I play constantly.

Oh, and the SMG (J) update did not affect my ability to play any other backup games, and I can play some other J-region games like Hajimete no Wii (Wiiplay in US).

So what should I do about Wiifit? Since I already "updated" via SMG (J), is Wiifit safe? Will it run on my US Wii, because SMG (J) absolutely did not. And Wiifit is twice as expensive, so I'm a little hesistant to buy it and then not be able to use it.

In theory the 3.1(J) update on WiiFit(J) shouldn't erase the 3.1(U) firmware of your Wii.

I still wouldn't do it, though!

I just connected to the internet again, and it asked me to update again today. I was wondering if it is safe, even though I already have 3.1U. Please tell me if it is safe to do this with wiikey.

THANK YOU

It looks like it is an update to the Wii shop.
However I haven't done it myself, and I have not seen a report about being safe for mod chips. So I would wait for one.

But since I took the update from Super Mario Galaxy (J), what kind of update will WiiFit have to offer? Has anyone else tried this yet?

There was a recent update for the Shopping and Photo channels. I downloaded it and it seems safe, although I've never used the Photo Channel so I can't speak to its functionality. Certainly, no element of my Wiikey has stopped working

Is this the correct order to update?
wiikey> 1.3 setup
wii > 3.1
wiikey > 1.9g
SMG update

?

I would do:
Wii --> 3.1
Wiikey --> 1.9g
Wiikey --> Config 1.3 --> Turn REGION OVERRIDE ON
Run games, including SMG. They should be fine.

Please read initial post for Reminders and Notes before beginning the update.

If any problem arises (and it shouldn't). then go to page 7 of this thread and look at the exchange between myself and ___666___.

for those that are worry of the new update or planing to do so, there is a catch as it will disable ur wiikey from playing PAL games and loading setup disk or any updates. however if you read back there is a fix look at _666_ post and links to the fix.

now there might be some good news to this update from nintendo as i have tested Super Mario Galaxy(USA) works while i have heard others dont from old 3.1U update.

I am a n00b in need of assistance can someone please tell me...

I have a jap wii, with a wiikey installed and I want to play a PAL back up of super mario galaxy...

I burnt my smg to a dvd+r as I usually do but when I tryed it on my wii it read the disc (showed the lil intro thing when you select the game channel) but then did an update (which i couldn't understand becasue I cant read jap any dont know where the language settings are) and once that was done the game didn't play. It just shows a black screen whenever I try the game.

I used the update 1.9g disc and updated my wiikey after reading problems simalar to mine being solved this way but the game doesnt work.

I am new to all this iso and updating stuff so please try and make it sound simple

I have a Jap Wii. From what I've read, I need a Jap version of SMG to run on this Wii, correct? ian_ng on page 6 indicated he got SMG working on a Jap Wii... I'm curious as to whether this SMG is the Jap version or the US version.

Hi, any idea what does the black screen with white japanese characters say?
I got this screen when I tried to load Mario and Sonic Olympics.
To get out of this screen, I had to power down my Wii and restart again.
Does Mario & Sonic Olympics require any special updates to my Wii system or Wiikey firmware in order to play?

I tried to update my wii key with the 1.9g but it failed after testing! Something about connection error or something. Any ideas how to solve? My wii is a jap set and like many others, incredibly desperate to play SMG.

Hi guys,

Read this thread and found it quite informative. Thanks for all the contributions.

I have some questions which hopefully someone can shed some light.

I have a Wii Jap console 3.0J

1. Is it safe to run a system update from WII to bring this up to 3.1J?

2. I burnt the the 1.9G and config 1.3 isos onto a DVD R+ but the disc won't load. I thought one of the wii key features was to allow you to run DVD R+ discs?

3. Region free is enabled via config 1.3 right? And this allows me to play games that are not Jap? i.e. PAL and US? If the games uses 3.1E or 3.1U and I have 3.0J even if I use Wiibrickblocker will the Wii be bricked?

Thanks in advance.
