Hi Dom, thanks for replying to me. Sorry for taking so long to reply, Ive been really busy!
Yes I have set up a static IP address, as described on the 1st page of this thread. However the light in BitTornado still stays yellow. Ive made sure that my router is port forwarded correctly, but Im worried that it is my Zoom x3 modem/router (its the newer A model) that is causing the problem, and I cant work out how to disable the NAT and share the internet over my network. Whenever i disable the NAT on my modem, it is just seemingly impossible to share the internet. I have also found it impossible to do port forwarding to allow BitTornado through the modems NAT.
Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks

uknowthis - If you have used a program such as Netlimiter or something similar yes it will work. For the username and password either check ur routers website for default passwords.

Thanks in advance

Hello all, i am going nuts trying to get my Azureus to download faster, everyone here is talking about no faster than 10K? Im geting 348 Bytes. . . im not even getting a whole Kb. Thats sad.
Now i am running on a Zonet Router, Model ZSR0104CP, with Azureus 2.3.0.4 and SafePeer plugin and progress bar plugin.
The Hardware Firewall segment has been disabled and i have no idea what to do now. I also have Panda Antivirus 4.02.01.
All im getting is blue and yellow faces, and when i try and do a NAT test, it fails.
Someone please help.

hey, i'm not all that good with computers but all i know is i'm getting a max of 15 kb/s with torrent downloads. I have a D-Link DSL 300 modem connected to the comp with an ethernet cable and i also have the standard windows XP firewall active. I have followed your instructions for the XP firewall and opened the ports there but that made little difference. As for the ports for the router, i doubt a DSL 300 is even a router but even so i have tried your instructions. I only have a default gateway under "PPP adapter iinet" in that command prompt screen, i entered it into a web browser and it didn't work. I tried all types of IP addresses but none work. I tried contacting the manufacturer but they have stopped making them and no longer provide support for them. Does anyone know if it is possible to open ports for a D-link DSL 300??? If so how??? Any other tips in general for increasing speed given my situation would be greatly appreciated.

I HAVE GONE FROM <10KB/s to 500KB/s WITH A COUPLE OF EASY SOFTWARE MODS. HERE IS HOW I DID IT.
I have been downloading torrents for several months now, since normal P2P got ridiculous with viruses and fake files. Just the fact that torrents and .iso and .rar files are too hard for the average imbecile to figure out makes torrent files much more reliable.
However, my average download speed was around 5KB/s, even though I have a 6,000+ KB/s connection speed that downloads normal files very quickly, sometimes I can even download a large, say 40MB .exe in under one second! I guess that all of the hops line up real good when that happens... Anyway, what made it even more frustrating is that I was uploading sometimes at around 80KB/s while downloading at 5!
Right now I am downloading torrents at anywhere from 200KB/s to 500KB/s and perhaps faster. Yesterday I was getting LESS THAN 1KB/s.
I am using the normal BitTorrent program (called BitTorrent). I have the latest version, actually it's a beta version. I tried various others that are supposed to cure speed problems, like Azareus and ABC, but not only did they not increase my speed, they were also bulky and buggy. I missed the simplicity of BitTorrent, so after my experiences with the other programs, and seeing that no program was going to fix my speed issue, I decided to uninstall them, reinstall BitTorrent, and figure out how to fix my speed problem. After all, the bandwidth was there and all I needed to do was to find out out to grab a little for my torrents.
After reading this thread, and some other threads and web pages, I decided to check it from a port and firewall view. As far as hardware, I am connected wirelessly to a cable modem/gateway/router. I connect directly to the router with no access point or software server. There are two other computers using the router - one connected wirelessly, and one directly to the router. I use 802/11G with WPA security.
As far as software, on my PC (WinXP Pro SP2)I use the PCCillin suite with antivirus, firewall, etc.; Windows XP firewall; CounterSpy; EWIDO; MAC filtering; and a couple of other small security programs and several Windows and system mods of my own. My system is lean and mean, and about as secure as they get. I don't have anything on here that is very personal - I am not worried about files. My protection goals are to guard against viruses, spyware, adware, malware, hackers who want to use my PC as a zombie, and people stealing my signal (and bandwidth). All of my software and firmware is updated to the latest versions, to the best of my knowledge, which includes all definition files.
OK here is the "meat" of the post, but I wanted to give you a little history of the issue first, since it is very much relevant when trying to fix speed problems. This is what I did.
1 - I configured the router to open ports 6881-6889 for the IP address of my particular PC only. TCP and UDP. I did not configure it for the gateway, since I wanted to compromise security as little as possible. I figured that I would try this first and see what happened.
2- I ditched Windows Firewall. After several tests including Steve's, I concluded that I get the same protection from the Trend Micro firewall alone and did not need two firewalls.
3 - I configured two exceptions within my firewall. One each for "in" and "out." They are configured to open ports 6881-6889 for the BitTorrent client ONLY.
After these three simple mods, I started seeing 150+KB/s speeds. I then lowered my upload speed (seed) from 5000KB/s to the lowest permitted by BitTorrent, 4KB/s(I have been uploading at speeds much faster then my downloads for months - it's time to get some back!). This gave me another 200+KB/s, on top of the 150 so I am now approaching 500KB/s with an average of around 300. I am NOT recommending that everybody lower their uploads to 4K, I plan to experiment with mine and hope to put it back to at least 100KB/s. If everyone slows down to the minimum, then the system won't work. This is just for testing purposes, until I figure out the best balance between upload and download speeds. I am certainly willing to sacrifice some download speed, as long as I am staying up in the three figure range; and I hope that all of you will too.
That's it. I am very happy with the performance now. I am about to finish a 700+ MB torrent that would have taken a couple of days before - this time it was more like one hour. Much better!
I am still experimenting. I am going to see if I can remove the port forwarding from the router entirely. It may have been just a software firewall issue. The less port opening that you need to do, the better, for security reasons.
Well I am very happy now! Good luck to the rest of you. If we can all solve our speed issues, the whole torrent system will get much faster.
UPDATE - I TRIED DISABLING THE PORT FORWARDING ON THE ROUTER AND WAS BACK TO 1kb/S. SO APPARENTLY THAT IS NECESSARY. HOWEVER TRY DOING WHAT I DID - OPEN THE PORTS FOR YOUR SPECIFIC PC'S IP ADDRESS, NOT THE ROUTER'S. IT WORKED FOR ME, WHEN OPENING THE ROUTER'S IP TO THE PORTS DID NOTHING.
A COUPLE OF ISSUES SO FAR - MY BROTHER SAID THAT HIS INTERNET CONNECTION (THE OTHER WIRELESS PC ON THE NETWORK) SLOWED TO A CRAWL AFTER I DID THIS. SO I AM EXPERIMENTING WITH THAT - I JUST OPENED PORTS 6890-6894 TO HIS PC AND 6895-6899 TO THE OTHER ONE BUT DID NOT SPECIFY ANY PROGRAMS. ALSO, MY OUTLOOK CONNECTION SEEMS TO BE CLOSED NOW. I AM NOT SURE IF IT IT ONLY WHEN DOWNLOADING TORRENTS, I NEED TO DO A LITTLE MORE TESTING. IF IT'S ONLY WHEN DOWNLOADING TORRENTS THAT I DON'T MIND, I CAN CHECK MY MAIL ON THE INTERNET INSTEAD OF USING OUTLOOK WHEN I AM DOWNLOADING. SO I STILL NEED TO DO A LITTLE MORE TESTING AND TWEAKING AND WILL POST WHEN I DO. HOWEVER MY TORRENTS ARE HAULING @$$!
ONE FINAL THING - WE BOUGHT A WIRELESS SIGNAL BOOSTER AND THAT HELPED A LOT TOO. IT DID NOT INCREASE DOWNLOAD SPEED PER SE. BUT IT DOES MAKE SURE THAT OUR WIRELESS SIGNAL IS ALWAYS AT THE MAX, WHERE IT USED TO FLUCTUATE BEFORE. I USED TO ONLY GET 2-3 "BARS" BUT NOW THEY ARE MAXED OUT AND THEY STAY THAT WAY.
FINALLY - I AM NOT TOTALLY SURE ABOUT THE SECURITY RAMIFICATIONS OF OPENING PORTS AS I DID. I HAVE READ BOTH THAT IT COMPROMISES SECURITY AND THAT IT DOES NOT. IF SOMEONE CAN CLEAR THIS UP, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW FOR SURE.
THANKS!
SECOND UPDATE - OPENING THE PORTS 6890-6894 FIXED MY BROTHER'S SLOW CONNECTION. ALSO, OUTLOOK SEEMS TO WORK FINE WITH BITTORRENT RUNNING, I THINK THE CONNECTION ISSUE WAS SOMETHING ELSE, PROBABLY A HOTMAIL ISSUE AS I USE OUTLOOK WITH HOTMAIL.
I HAVE ALSO BUMPED MY UPLOAD SPEED BACK UP TO 100KB/s. KEEPING IT AT 4KB/s IS -NOT- COOL AND IN THE END IT SLOWS THE WHOLE SYSTEM DOWN FOR EVERYBODY, YOURSELF INCLUDED. I HAVE A 6,000+KB/s CONNECTION, IF YOU HAVE A SLOWER ONE YOU CAN LOWER THE UPLOAD SPEED ACCORDINGLY BUT DON'T BE A LEECH. EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR SETTINGS TO FIND THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE UPLOAD SPEED THAT YOU CAN USE WITHOUT SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTING YOUR DOWNLOAD SPEED AND KEEP IT THERE. DO THIS ON A FAST TORRENT. THERE IS A POINT TO WHERE MAKING THE UPLOAD SPEED ANY SLOWER WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR DOWNLOADS, AND YOU WILL UPLOADING SLOW FOR NO REASON.
I HOPE THAT THIS INFO HELPS YOU. I WOULD STILL LIKE TO KNOW THE SECURITY RAMIFICATIONS OF OPENING PORTS, ESPECIALLY WITHOUT THEM BEING LINKED TO A SPECIFIC APPLICATION. THANKS!

Alright, here goes nothing, I hope someone who knows what they are doing reads this:
I have been scouring the internet for about 4 days now searching for anything that can speed up my Bittorrent download speed.
If Bittorrent is supposed to be the next-gen P2P software, then why the hell am I only getting 10 KBps!!! C'mon HTTP is faster!
Okay, well here is some information that might help, I am trying to be very specific.
*******************************************************************
OS: Windows XP SP2
Download Client: Bittornado T-0.3.12
ISP: Charter
Connection: Cable
Location: Wisconsin
Router Make/Model: Dlink DI-524 Revision A
Firewall Program: ZoneAlarm Pro 6.0.613.003
Other: I have Norton SystemWorks 2005 w/out Internet Security!!!
All I know is that it has Internet Worm Protection
*******************************************************************
My test results from http://www.bandwithplace.com/speedtest/
Speed
349.4 kilobits per second
Communications 349.4 kilobits per second
Storage 42.7 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 24 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad
*******************************************************************
The exact problem:
According to my research I should be getting a lot more than 0-30 KBps on my downloads.
*******************************************************************
The Steps I Have Taken:
- I have forwarded the ports on my router (6881-6886, 6969)
- I have triggered the ports on my router (6881-6886, 6969)
- I have configured my firewall for the program "btdownloadgui.exe" (aka Bittornado)
- I have configured my firewall for the general ports (6881-6886, 6969)
- I ran an NAT test at http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl and passed
- I called my ISP and asked if they blocked or throttled any of the ports that I want to use...they said they didn't.
- I tried changing everything to port 4882 just in case, but there was no speed change.
- Now I have everything changed back to 6881-6886, 6969. (Eg. What it was before I called my ISP)

Here are some photos I have included to clarify anything:

How can I find my default gateway number for doing the IP login thing for port forwarding??
I do the Run > Type in CMD > IPCONFIG
And it shows my IP and other numbers, but the Default Gateway is blank.
I'm using AOL 9.0, WinXP, SP2, BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL Modem.
Sorry if I'm a liitle fuzzy on the details, i'm not very good at these things.
Thanks,

Well, usually it is 192.168.0.1 (at least that's mine).
But first of all...do you even have a router? That would be the problem because if you don't have a router then you couldn't access your default gateway.

you guys do realise that the more torrent d/ls you have the slower they get cos even if your peers are'nt sending they are still using your bandwidth just by being there

i am using BitComet 0.59 with a DLink DI-524 router on a WXP SP2 machine. I've configured my router to add a application (BitComet)
Trigger Port 6460 - 6470 (Bitcomet default port is 6464)
Trigger Type Both
Public Port 6460 - 6470
Public Port Both
i did a nat test and got a big Fail.
Have i configured my router incorrectly?
as a note, the machine that i run bitcomet on is DMZ enabled, and i still get an amazingly slow speed of 10-20kbps.
If someone knows how to fix this please give me some tips by posting here or emailin me at jason_yang@rogers.com
Thanks

First i would reccommend all switching to Azureus as its easier to configure, then you need to set up all internal ports to be the ones used by bt program, then all external ones should be at 50000 or so, then forward and trigger all internal ports to external ones also if you have a linksys router you will have to set all ports for the computer you are using in the dhcp to be automatic and have the right adress for the right computer, don't forget to set ports to both tcp & udp settings, i have 2 computers using my network and had to split ports betwen them, good luck it took me many months to set up my router as there are lots of them around and bt clients too. Also the quality of sites where you get the torrents from and amount of seeders can affect the speed, and have the download speed set at 80% of your bandwidth. Good luck.

Hey.
Great tutorial. Helped alot.
A side note though. I'm using a microsoft router. You have to access the broadband network utility (sam way as in tutorial). However, the port opeing thing is called Persistent Port something or other and it is under Security. It is a bit different than the LinkSys. Also, You have to seperatley enable both TCP and UDP.
Thanks,
Drew

I just gotta say WOW. 51 pages. I was here like over a year ago (may 18th 2004 to be exact) with the same problem everyone seems to be having, Anyhow I could not fix the problem..But then my ISP contract was over 2 months later, so i switched to another ISP and now i have no problems connecting to torrents. So im guessing some ISP's block certain ports and if you want to fix the problem, you have to ring up your isp and see what they can do for you, thats my advice, goodluck everyone :) cheers
