Hi, I have a 8MB line with UKOnline, using a Netgear DG834GT wireless router.

My computer is wired to the router, and I've forwared the ports 6881-6889 but my download speeds are still slow (like 50k speeds...)

I've done some port scans ans, and they only come up with "Closed". When I am downloading, though port 6881 is "Open".

Frank your router should have the info of both dns ip's, i know mine does (using a belkin) i know my girlfriends parents do (and they have a netgear) so look threw your routers settings it should all show up even if the dos window doesnt show it

Yeah.

I think it might just be the seeds on torrents. There were about 100 seeds and I had 300k download going. The orb is green as well, so I'm just assuming it's to do with the seeds.

yes thats exactly what the problem was, biggest problem with people and torrents, is they always want to use the public sites like mininova and the others, (one that dont need to sign up for) problem with that is, no one stays around long enough to share files, only long enough to download then leave, which screws other people for speed, the private sites force you to upload and keep a 1:1 ratio so at least you upload as much as you download

Do you know of any decent sites like that? I went to one, torrentbytz I think, and it'd just come up with the User Limit Exeeded sort of notice.

I have just bought a wireless router a netgear wpn824, before my computer was the gateway and i had wonderful download speeds with my 8mbit connection.

now i have gone through all the guides for Azureus and done the guides for the router but the speed is still very slow.

i have win2k sp4 kerio firewall and nod32, the router does have Upnp active and Azureus does give some error message about it sometimes.

im so tired from all the reading and frustration so this question form will probably be incomplete but im at a loss as what to do.

look at my settings please: (pictures located on my personal webserver)

When we are at the setup screen for our router. Where it asks what type of internet connection, should it be obtain an ip automatically, or should we switch it to static? I have switched it to static, then have no connection, and have to go back and change it.

hi i am in a colleg dorm and my download speed is horrible. with bt is like 2kb and with sharzaa it seem to be not even reaching 1kb. i went to shields .com to test all my ports from 6881 to 6889 and they seem to be working. i also tested 6346 and that seems to be working also. i have addd 9 exceptions in the window firewall 6346, 6881 to 6889. i only did tciip and not upd. i am in a college dorm like i said do i don't know what router are they using or how to forward them? If they get forwarded wouldn't that means all of the bt connections get forwarded to me? i went and ask the admin and they said they don't know anything about it. see the thing with mine is that i got plenty of source but every time each source only gives me a few hundred bytes not even one kilobyte. bt seem to work last semester here and i have goten to like 30kb but now i am barely getting 2kb.
some one from the first page said they goten a high speed with 2 firewall and they didn't have to forward their port. i don't know if i can forward my port since i am in a college dorm. so do i need to set 8 more exceptions in the window firewall from the port 6881 to 6889 for th upd also??? plss can some one help me i am not asking for a miracle just 20kb and i will be happy. by the way i am running window xp sp2 home edition with everything updated. could windo update be the problem that caused all this??? pls some one help me i am desperate.

I just wanna update on my 2-PC connections. I can't replicate the results from my first attempt where I forwarded 6881-6889 to PC 1 and 50001-50009 to PC2 and both have green smileys and fast downloads. Now, only PC1 has green smiley. I didn't change any setting and it's puzzling me why I can't get them to work. :-(

you have to forward ports 6881 to 6889 to both computers, ie. 6881-6889 gets 50001-5009 to comp 1 at address 100 and 6881-6889 gets 60001-60009 to comp 2 at address 101 and everything is green

I really don't know what to do with stupid torrents. I tried all and nothing works. Dl speed is always low. I'm using Win Firewall, Siemans a-100 ADSL modem (1024/192), all ports fowarded (green smilies), half port connections set to 1000. From all test speed sites i get 106 Kb/s only torrents are slow. Tried to disable Xp Firewall but that didn't change anything. Is there any thing i can do so Azureus (or any other client) download files at least at abour 60 Kb/s.

I tried to download torrents with 125 seeds and 75 peers and nothing also tried download torrents with 300 seeds and 735 peers but nothing.

At this moment i'm downloading torrent with 17 seeds and 9 peers. I'm connected to 12 seeds and 6 peers and my download speed is around 4.5 Kb/s.

What i'm doing wrong???

mitch999,

I can't forward 6881-6889 to both PC's. My Aztec router doesn't allow it. It has to be one or the other. Not both. Does your router allow it? Is there a workaround?

Out of curiosity (I don't know how a router works), how does the router know that 50001-50009 are to be directed to PC1 and 60001-60009 are to be directed to PC2 when we don't specify it so?

Thank you

Here is what you could be able to do.

Fist of all I recommend a great Bittorrent client called uTorrent (microTorrent). It is located at http://www.utorrent.com/ and is awesome. It is just like Azuereus but doesn't use Java, which rocks. It only takes up a little bit of memory so it doesn't hog down your computer.

Okay, that's not the point I am trying to make. What I am trying to say is that uTorrent has a special feature called UPnP (Universal Plug 'n' Play find out more on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPnP)

Basically, with UPnP you don't have to worry about manually opening ports. UPnP protocol automatically searches for the best way to connect your client/server to another client/server.

Another thing you can do, that I don't recommend, is try and get into the school's router config. First you are gonna have to find what kind of router your school's network uses. Once you do that go to http://www.otosoftware.com/wwhelp/Default_Router_Usernames_and_Pa... (if its not listed here use Google) and try and find if the default router name and password is listed there. If the network admin is dumb enough, he might not have changed the password, and you will have access.

Other than that all I can think of it mabye a litte social engineering, or sneak in and reset the router, then login with the default username and pass, and open the ports.

Hope that helps. E-Mail me at plugitinn (at) gmail.com <- (at) is really @ but I do that for security reasons.

UPDATE (11-16-05 12:07pm) - You can try and see if any other ports are open on the router that aren't used often. You can tell your client to use those also. Here is a list of all the port numbers http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers You are going to have to guess and check which ones are open, or find out some other way (ping?)

i am gonna try utorrent
as for the port i have tested them at the shieldsup.com and it says their all open from 6881 to 6889 and i am getting a connection most of the time. except for torrents with large seeders and leechers like above 5000 or something. then i always get tracker down on my sharzaa when i try to download something with over 5000 seeders.

and also i don't really know who to get the router information because i went and ask the people at the it help desk and most of them never even heard of bit torrent. but i wonder if there is some way i can find out using some softwares?
by the way do you think my problem is with the ports??? or maybe with the routers? cause i am getting a lot of source just that each source only gives me a few hundred bytes. anyway i can get around the firewall or router thats causing it?

anyway thanks for ur help

hi i found out my port 6969 is blocked but port 6881 to 6889 are all fine.
i am having problem connecting to trackers on some torrents and the rest that i can connect gives me really slow download speed.
i mean i have a lot of source but each source only gives me a few hundred bytes. could the download speed be slow if port 6969 is blocked??? its very strange i still can get a lot of source on some torrents but on some it says can not communicate with tracker.

i have installed the patch that fix the limit of the tci ip connection but it doens't seem to help.

anyway know a way to get around port 6969 if its blocked? also to increase bt speed? cause i am getting 2kb and thats about it. even with a lot of source

i have heard of someone saying something about http tunneling
i wonder if that would work??

I'm no expert, but I have no idea how to change it from 6969. The only way would be to find a tracker that uses a different port.

Actually, now that I think about it, that might not even be the problem it could be something else, but like I said I'm no expert and I have no idea if that is valid.

The tunneling method sounds familiar, but I won't vouch for it.
E-Mail me at plugitinn (at) gmail.com and we can both try and get this sorted out. You see I had the exact same problem as you, once I got uTorrent it didnt really work, but lately it has been amazing. I don't mean to brag or make you feel bad, but I am getting 80kb/s and I love it! So what I am gonna do is everything I can to get you close to there.

UPDATE 11-17-05 8:10pm - I found a useful website: http://wiki.theppn.org/index.php/BitTorrent_Tutorial#Everything_Y... this might have some use to you.

i have found out something strange about my college. i have used utorrent in my dorm and nothing had change. it was still like 2 kb most of the time.
but when i went to the library and i unplugged one of the cables on their computer and plugged it back in to mine i was able to get like 20 to 27 kb with utorrent. however port 6969 is still blocked so some torrents wont work at all. do you know why might this be happening? is it some router thats mis configured? or maybe too many people is accessing the router in the dorm? but the thing is i could still get pretty good download speed if i use regular download.

When I set up port forwarding on my router it asks for my internal ip (no problem) and also the internal ports...

Have set up external 6881-6889 but how do I find out the internal range?

Any ideas???

Its a wireless BT voyager btw...

Ive been using torrents for over 2 years with a standard cable modem and a router with out one single problem with speeds. I recently started with a new company for work doing commercial installs for broadband/HSI for a well known cable company. I have become lucky enough to have one of their commercial modems/routers given to me with 10mb service for lets say, test purposes. The brand of modem is an SMC I can forward ports 6881-6999. I use bit tornado for my app but still the status lights are still always yellow. No matter what torrent I try this on, no matter how heavily seeded it is and no mattter how many users I can connect to it still says im behind a router/firewall. Never in the past have I had this nor such slow speeds(max at one time was 40kb). I suppose I could open the DMZ but this would then make all my ports open which I dont want at all. If there is anyone that could give some helpful suggestions, all will be appreciated. EDIT: And yes windows firewall and router firewall are off and no software fires running either.
